pure comedy gold...absolutely fantastic!

Dark, dark, dark, and hilarious.

I had to turn over, though I liked the characters, I found his acting buttock-clenchingly wooden.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/08/2010 22:38

he wasn't acting. he was being him. if you've ever seen him in stand up you'll know he really is that awkward.

I hated it. Cringe

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 09/08/2010 22:39

We switched it off.

It improved then?

ThatVikRinA22 · 09/08/2010 22:45

oh i rather liked it. i thought he was just being him too, it was the characters around him that were larger than life that made his awkwardness funny.

ill watch the next one i think. i thought it was quite clever.

Bessie123 · 09/08/2010 22:46

I thought it got better as it went on

Heathcliffscathy · 09/08/2010 22:47

god i loved it.

he really is (IRL) sad and lonely and existential anguished.

I loved his reaction to his grandfather's announcement that he had prostate cancer 'shall I get a grown up? why are you telling me?' and just like his mum 'you're joking you are joking aren't you' etc.

beautifully written and observed.

i've seen ep 2 as well... don't think he's nailing who he 'is' yet, but getting better.

noeyedear · 10/08/2010 08:59

I thought it was funny. I also thought it was him just being him- he didn't seem to have done a lot of writing- just doing a show about himself! My DH thought they were overdoing the jewish stereotypes, (but that might have been because he had a Jewish grandma and kept getting flashbacks during the dinner scene and kept going 'Oh God!Melons!')

squeaver · 10/08/2010 09:02

Agree with aitch, I think it'll be a grower.

Was a wee bit disappointed with Rebecca Front (who is usually fab), thought she over-played the Jewishness a bit too much. All the rest of them were good though and the characters refreshingly un-stereotyped (eg Clive "he's a murderer").

yama · 10/08/2010 09:04

I loved it too.

I dont think it matters that Simon cannot act - the rest of the cast were superb.

It's a shame that the actor playing the Grandad died a fews weeks ago.

Aitch · 10/08/2010 09:19

i think he can act, it's when he overplays his hand that he weakens the show. he needs to be the still centre, given how large everyone else is playing it, so when he becomes too recognisably 'simon amstell off popworld' it undermines things.

thought he was surprisingly good in movement, actually, it was when he was sitting down that his energy went to his voice and made him a bit too kenny williams. but every time he could disperse to hand-wringing etc he was a good wee actor.

nevergoogle · 10/08/2010 09:31

anybody going to let me in on where i can watch it?
i was listening to clips on radio 4 yesterday and thought it was a radio programme they were talking about.
bbc?

yama · 10/08/2010 10:51

Agree Aitch.

Nevergoogle - it was on BBC2 at 10pm last night if that helps.

ElsieTannerAsWell · 10/08/2010 13:47

"Eighteen hours of screaming labour you were ? and this is how you repay me?".
Uproarious! Give me more of this, perfectly observed.

anonacfr · 10/08/2010 13:54

BBC Iplayer has it right now. You can watch or download.

anonacfr · 10/08/2010 14:17

I quite liked 'I breastfed you you little shit'. I can see myself saying that to my kids a few years down the line. Grin

bluebump · 10/08/2010 15:38

I thought it was quite funny and can see it being a grower.

I'm sad to hear the grandad died in real life, he was brilliant in Benidorm.

nevergoogle · 10/08/2010 16:22

I'm going to watch it now while i do the dishes, back in a bit.

nevergoogle · 10/08/2010 17:30

very very good, i like it.

anonacfr · 10/08/2010 17:39

Me too ! I thought it was really funny. I didn't think Amstell was that bad, there were just moments when it looked like he was trying really hard not to laugh.
Clive was hilarious.

ThatVikRinA22 · 10/08/2010 22:48

clive WAS a prick.

Hazeyjane · 11/08/2010 03:13

tegan · 11/08/2010 06:26

i did like it but found it hard to watch at times but think it will grow on me

Aitch · 11/08/2010 13:11
