pure comedy gold...absolutely fantastic!

Dark, dark, dark, and hilarious.

What channel was it on? Might have to check out BBC Iplayer.

Aitch · 11/08/2010 13:53

bbc, not sure which. do report back, am v curious.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/08/2010 15:04

'it took 3 people to stich me back together, it was like a sweatshop down there'

stupendous.

I forgot that bit. Heh!

notnowbernard · 11/08/2010 17:00

I didn't get Roger and Val at all really Confused

Liked Grandma's house a lot though

Aitch · 11/08/2010 20:37

no, me neither. i thought it was a bit self-important, like an undergrad lunchtime play but on the telly and in primetime. and yet despite this i still adore alfred molina. he is great in it. i just am not sure why it's on my telly.

tegan · 11/08/2010 20:52

i actually loved roger and val and thought dawn french was so realistic

midnightexpress · 11/08/2010 20:58

I am undecided. I though he was a bit cringy - like he'd be thrown into the middle of it, but perhaps that was the point. I liked the Jewish family - reminds me of the ILs. Clive was splendid and the grandad was good. It did seem a teeeeeeeny bit too Royle-Family-Meets-Larry-David (though why that is Not A Good Thing I haven't yet decided either)

Aitch · 11/08/2010 21:09

meets garry shandling as well i thought.
i thought dawn french wasn't good enough, but that's partly because she's too familiar (and that she's not got such a great range as an actress). i thought for her she was good, and i suppose that without her it wouldn't have been made, but then again why was it made?

Ronaldinhio · 11/08/2010 21:15

i adore him and though his casting was excellent but...
i really did think it was too weak to have been commissioned yet some very funny lines but a lot of it was clunkingly awful

i'll still watch the next episode as I'd love to like it

GokWannabe · 11/08/2010 21:43

At the risk of sounding v dumb and naive, when a few of you said the jewishness was overdone (aitch, squeaver) what did you mean?

Other than the mentioning of Shiva I didn't pick up on anything. What am I not getting?

Aitch · 11/08/2010 21:47

i didn't say the jewishness was overdone, i said that the other actors were playing it large. it's a performance style, not a religion. Wink

GokWannabe · 11/08/2010 21:49

aitch - yes, sorry, i realised i'd got your name mistaken when i re-read the post. sorry, half concentrating on baby, half on laptop!

Heathcliffscathy · 11/08/2010 21:52

you know i like to think of it as eastern european rather than strictly jewish...half my family is polish and the stereotypes were totally recognisable: 'you cant jack your job on the telly in it's my only joy' total lack of understanding of vegetarianism (the avocado on a plate for his main course) etc

and of that amazing brand of passive aggressiveness "have you got time to go and get a hat/here's some sellotape for your tache' etc

i just thought it was great and have been giggling at bits of it all day

I missed it. Nuts.

anyone know if they're going to give it the Repetitive Repeat Treatment they (v kindly) gave to Rev?

SpringHeeledJack · 11/08/2010 21:54

...I am predisposed to loooove it whether I actually see it or not

I reckon that Amstell is a genius I do

nevergoogle · 11/08/2010 21:57

there's something distinctly woody allen about grandma's house. something about the way the characters are played as observations on the part of the main character if that makes any sense. the neuroticism and angst of the characters.
good stuff.

GokWannabe · 11/08/2010 22:09

right, i think i know what you mean now. i love Amstell and enjoyed the show but after reading on here i wondered if most of it had gone over my head (am v clueless on things like this).

looking forward to the next one, i think new shows usually get better once the characters are more established as a series progresses.

Aitch · 11/08/2010 22:11

second ep better than first imo. have third here too.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/08/2010 22:12

bitch. how did you get that gig anyway? does it run in families??

OP posts:
Aitch · 11/08/2010 22:14

yes. it's dynastic, like the pakistani presidency.

nevergoogle · 11/08/2010 22:16
Heathcliffscathy · 11/08/2010 22:16

i fucking knew it! no one deserves to watch telly for a living...mind you bet loads of it is painful dross???

OP posts:
Aitch · 11/08/2010 22:18

i am currently watching heartbeat, so yes, there is pain sometimes. but nope, mostly it's great!

nevergoogle · 11/08/2010 22:19

you couldn't pay me to watch the rest of that luther series. sometimes 1 episode is enough.
