14yo got a tattoo

Just found out my 14yo daughter has a tattoo. I'm fuming. I had no knowledge of this, and she defiantly would not have had permission if she asked.
I found out after she had showered (it's on her ankle). I asked her what it was, and she ran into her room. Fast forward an hour to when she emerges. Big argument follows and she storms out and goes to her fathers house. As far as I could see it was an elephant with some morse code (I think) above it. She refused to tell me where she had gotten it done.

It's quite possible that the tattoo was done with parental permission; the OP isn't her DDs only parent.

It's a grey area legally, but unless the OP has a court order specifically prohibiting her DDs dad from giving permission then it's likely that neither the tattoo studio, or the DDs dad, would face prosecution.

RudeElf · 05/03/2016 10:33

Surely you cant legally tattoo an under 18 even with parental permission?

PrettyBrightFireflies · 05/03/2016 10:40

True, rude - but if an underage teen turned up with fake ID and an accompanying parent, I don't think the tattoo Studio would be held liable.

MrsJayy · 05/03/2016 10:43

Somebody in DDS year got done with permission but they were 17 if a tattooists did tattos with consent on younger kids you would have 11yr olds running about with tattoos

dementedpixie · 05/03/2016 10:45

It's illegal to tattoo anyone under 18 even with parental permission

MrsJayy · 05/03/2016 10:48

So the consent thing is a myth then ?

dementedpixie · 05/03/2016 10:55

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1969/24 - bit of a paltry fine though!

pinkyredrose · 05/03/2016 14:03

MrsJay yes it's a common urban myth that a parent can consent to a teenagers tattoo. They can't, it's illegal.

OP any news on where she got it yet?

pinkyredrose · 05/03/2016 14:05

Under 18 I mean.

eaturveggies123 · 05/03/2016 15:18

She still won't tell me where she got it. She says she knows I'll make trouble. I don't think she understands that it's a big deal. She said she got it for £20 in a proper tattoo place. They didn't ask for ID, and she's clearly not 18 (looks her age). She let me see it properly and it looks pretty much healed. She got it a month ago and says she was cleaning three times a day and putting cream on it. I don't know how I didn't notice this.

Post on facebook. There will be people who know where to go for an underage tattoo. At least now you know (or at least she is saying) it was a 'proper' shop.

RudeElf · 05/03/2016 15:58

Or google all tattoo shops in your town and threaten to spend next weekend dragging her round all the shops one by one asking if they did the work. (None of them will actually admit to it so no point actually doing it but it might panic her enough to fess up)

eaturveggies123 · 05/03/2016 20:08

I'm a little less cross. I know she went behind my back and it's illegal but the meaning behind it has touched me. She got it done for her aunt, who passed at away 2 years ago on Tuesday. The morse code is her initial and the elephant is to represent that because elephants supposedly don't forget, that she won't forget her aunt.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 05/03/2016 20:15

£20?

Nah, no way. A proper shop would charge way more than that.

RudeElf · 05/03/2016 20:19

Grin She knows how to work you OP!

MrsJayy · 05/03/2016 20:20

Oh i know she should not have gone behind your back but the meaning is really sweet.

Bunbaker · 05/03/2016 20:26

I would be worried about hepatitis C and other infections if she hasn't been to a reputable place, which she clearly hasn't.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 05/03/2016 21:03

Doesn't matter what the meaning is, it's illegal. I'm not anti tattoo I have plenty of my own. No reputable place would do that for £20 so either it cost more or it wasn't done in a proper studio.

eaturveggies123 · 11/03/2016 19:01

She's gone and done it again! I can't believe this! She's got a bloody Peter Pan thing on her ribs! £25 she claims, and she doesn't get pocket money or have a job so I'm worried about where she's getting this money from! I'm so cross, I've sent her to her room and confiscated her phone. She's changed that passcode so I can't get into it. What do I do?

OP posts:
RudeElf · 11/03/2016 19:08

Who is the peter pan in memory of?

what do I do?

Get firmer.

Why dont you already have the passcode? She is 14. You presumably pay the contract so have all the details for setting up the phone account? Email saying you have locked yourself out of your phone and need to reset.

Is she grounded? I'd ground her for a month. She's taking the piss out of you.

JennyOnAPlate · 11/03/2016 19:21

Ground her and refuse to give the phone back until she tells you the passcode.

Pinkheart5915 · 11/03/2016 19:30

At least it is only on her ankle so can be easily hidden.

It's also good you say it looks pretty much healed as I would of been worried about it getting infected, as if a tattoo place broke the law and gave a 14 year old a tattoo do they break the laws regarding hygiene, needles etc. If she does ever tell you where she got it done, please report them.

You say she went to her fathers after you and her had an arguement, I hope her father has a strong dis approval of what's she's done? You need to stand firm together on this.
When she has calmed down chat to her explain why you are disappointed in what she's done. Also grounding her is a good idea?

mineofuselessinformation · 11/03/2016 19:40

She won't give you the passcode, you take the SIM card out....

ineedamoreadultieradult · 11/03/2016 19:48

Do they look professional or amateur? If the phone has a code and she won't tell you it she doesn't get the phone back.

eaturveggies123 · 11/03/2016 22:07

They look professional. The Peter Pan one, she got it done today. She's told me the code. Apart from quite a few messages from boys (nothing too bad) there's nothing on there. She's grounded for two months.
