Gah! I bloody HATE weddings.

LowLevelWhinging · 04/07/2010 23:22

I really really hate having to dress formally - I always feel like I look like a sad sack of spuds! I'm short and porky and crappy ankle bones means I can't wear heels - I live in converse usually.

Got to go to a wedding and it's bloody 'black tie'! DP will be in a tux.

Anybody able to advise pleeeeeeeeeze?

I'm 5'2", size 16, apple shaped so always look bloody pregnant. Contrary to received wisdom, I am an apple with crap legs so definitely knee length or lower.

So would a maxi be bad for short and round woman? Or what about a sticky out skirt type shape. I JUST HAVEN"T A CLUE!

Oh god, I can't tell you how much that option appeals to me. Unfortunately it would look REALLY bad. Hey, and so will I! (boom boom)

I am virtually an old person at the age of 35, but DP is part of the wedding party so I'm going to have to grin and bear it. At least it's on a school night so I can make my excuses after dinner.

What do we think of this?

With some kind of arm coverage.

I am pale, pink toned skin with kind of warm brown hair. I look blotchy in anything pale.

I love the dress, if you get a wrap rather than jacket, make sure it is one that sits in place. I have a lovely one from the US, that just sits there, others are always slipping off.

Now what am I going to wear to niece's wedding (have kids outfits sorted, even stroppy teenager, but no idea for me, except comfy gold sandals).

BunnyLebowski · 05/07/2010 08:58

If you're 5'2 and can't wear heels then you are going to look like a weeble in a maxi dress. Sorry.

Will come back with some suggestions.

LowLevelWhinging · 05/07/2010 09:30

Honesty appreciated bunny.

Bot sure the maxi's a good idea-if you don;t normally do dressed up, that's a lot of swishy fabric to deal with.

Soemthing liek this here?

Can you wear wedges, or do shoes need to be completely flat?

MarineIguana · 05/07/2010 09:41

I think you need this kind of shape to emphasise waist and give you a good shape (though afraid that actual dress is sold out now but you get the idea) and you could wear that with sparkly flat shoes or sandals, or wedges maybe. As you are 5'2" a dress like that will come below the knee. If you really hate your lower legs you could wear boots, but I don't think they would be v noticeable.

I'm like you, a very very informal dresser and hate formal dressing, though the opposite in that I'm big and tall, can never get ladylike shoes to fit, etc. I fret and faf over wedding outfits and cobble something together and I know from the photographic evidence that I'm not v good at it, but what the hell, I'm not the start atraction. I like the food, the kids running around, the fun and dancing and romantic moments and I wouldn't have missed most of the weddings I've been to - I think it would be sad to miss it just for this reason.

MarineIguana · 05/07/2010 09:42

Oh dear my typing sucks (or my keyboard is playing up) - hope you can make sense of that

PlumSykes · 05/07/2010 09:48

[[http://www.monsoon.co.uk/Day-Dresses/Florence-Dress/invt/65218288&bklist=icat,5,shop,women,dresses ,smartdresses this] would be good on an apple, as the navy section woudl slim/trim your tummy.

PlumSykes · 05/07/2010 09:49

similar shape to the Boden one

PlumSykes · 05/07/2010 09:50

,smartdresses first Monsoon link again

Prosecco · 05/07/2010 09:58

I agree re. the maxi dress. definitely wear something shorter taht also accentuates your waist.

Are you busty?

what about this?

SkipHopJump · 05/07/2010 09:59

What about something like this. It wouldn't be too tight around your tummy but would still show off your figure. You could wear it with this

this dress could be nice too. With these kind of dresses you don't really need to accessorize, and then you won't feel as dressed up.

this is pretty too

LowLevelWhinging · 05/07/2010 10:17

I am loving your choices! Yes, I'm up for trying wedges. My feet are small and not perfectly shaped- so I'm up for spending money on good, soft leather. I also really like the idea of not having to accessorize. Wearing jewellery names me feel like a ten year old dressing up!

Think I'll book in with hairdresser on the morning too so I don't struggle with that.

Just going in to work now so I'll be back for a proper Internet shopping session tonight!

Ooh no, I love a good dress up - never happier than when I can ponce around in a well constructed frock and some girly shoes. It's 'smart-casual' that does my head in.

I'm either scruffy-casual or smart-smart.
No in between nonsense.

That Phase Eight Peacock dress is lovely - would be very flattering on your tummy, and the Monsoon kimono style thingy is just gorgeous.

rockmama · 05/07/2010 16:14

i am really liking skiphopjumps suggestions so far....i think that might be a nice shape of dress and would look lovely with some sparkly flats. i do like the green autograph dress as well

rockmama · 05/07/2010 17:25

what about this

rockmama · 05/07/2010 17:27

oops i typed link wrong i meant this

LowLevelWhinging · 05/07/2010 18:01

I think I'm going to order a couple of these - I forgot there's the bloody hen do too.

Rockmama, I agree, the green autograph dress is gorgeous but sold out. booo. The jigsaw dress is gorgeous. I wonder if it would show every lump and bump though? (I have many).

OK

Any thoughts on wedges/flats?

Maryqueenofchocs · 05/07/2010 19:17

I love Get Cutie, just ordered this

in red fan birds

no one will be wearing the same, and they can be made to measure, as i'm 5'9 they are making it longer just for me!
