Help!!

I have my first proper date for over 20 years tonight. We only organised it last night. We're going to eat at a dinery type place.

So, I'm thinking jeans, nice top, heels? Or is jeans too casual? Or should I wear my trusty black boots? Linen trousers and top or is that too smart?

I'm 40 and really too old for all this lol.

Jeans, heels and nice top. If you make too much effort it will show, you want to feel comfortable and relaxed.

Make sure the heels are high high high!

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:11

Wine -they need to be i'm 5ft1 he's 6ft4 lol

And thanks

I agree, jeans and heels. good combo of casual but enough sophisictaion for a middle ages women.

they need to be good jeans though, not mumsy per una ones or baggy shapeless 'boyfriend' ones.

What have you got?

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:24

Brideshead - I am just standing looking at my jeans...... I have too many momjeans lol. Of the decent ones, I have one nice pair of bootcut ones in dark blue, a very similar pair only black, ripped skinnies, and a pair of grey skinnies.

I am 5ft1 and size 10 if that helps.

OP posts:
BridesheadRegardless · 11/05/2010 09:27

Dark blue bootcut.

i know bootcut is supposed to be passe, but they reamin very flattering, and dark blue is the best for a smart but still being a bit casual look.

Are they nice and fitted to show off your lovely figure? Size 10, in nice fitted jeans with heels, you'll look fabulous.

OK, tops??

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:30

awh thanks.

Loads of fitted white t-shirts (sad I know think Gap and next) - not wearing those lol

few coloured tops, couple of linen casual blouses if that makes sense.

Oh I forgot I bought a turquoise armani floaty top thing in an outlet - maybe with a white vest top underneath??

Shoes - I have denim heels which match the jeans

And if I wear the turquoise thing I have a matching bag and beads!!

OP posts:
muddleduck · 11/05/2010 09:31

I wouldn't wear jeans for the simple reason that I have a wardrobe full of clothes that never get worn whereas my jeans get worn all the time.

use it as an excuse to wear something fabulous from the back of your wardrobe!

BridesheadRegardless · 11/05/2010 09:34

Like the sound of floaty armani top.

A bit concerned about over matchiness though.

Do you mean all will be turquoise or just they look good together?

Definitely no to turquoise bag and shoes if so.

Intrigued by 'denim heels' I presume they are better than they sound and I'll trust your judgment on that.

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:36

muddle - aarrrgghh now i'm confused lol

ok - superdry hoodie dress?? bare legs, high heel sandles (which I don't own - excuse for shopping??)

and hope its not baltic?

need to ring and book emergency eyebrow job this morning first thing too - they open at 10 oh flip i'm nervous

OP posts:
iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:38

oh the denim heels are swesome - seriously nice, not all turquoise - beads are brown and green and blue and turquoise and bag is darker blue. Or i could just take my battered trusty leather barbour bag that i take everywhere lol

OP posts:
iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:39

doh spelling - awesome lol

OP posts:
BridesheadRegardless · 11/05/2010 09:43

OK, yes to beads then, but i would stick with a brown leather bag to make it slung together casual look and to ensure avoidance of wedding day matchiness.

I know what muddle is saying, but for first date I'd go with the slightly safer knockout jeans and then plan/shop over the next few days for a different outfit to steer away from jeans.

TBH, I'm getting the impression that you already have a gorgeous figure and nice clothes, you are going to look fabulous and all you are really in need of is reassurance.

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:46

Brideshead - awh thanks!! I've losts tons of weight in the last year and a bit, couple that with separation, i've gone from a size 16 to a 10 since last Christmas!!

I'm just very nervous about dressing for the date thing - haven't done that in 24 years with anyone other than the ex if that makes any sense? And he seriously knocked my confidence, but that's a whole different thread!

Have texted my mate and am planning shopping trip on friday night . Need new clothes big style, which this date has highlighted!

OP posts:
BridesheadRegardless · 11/05/2010 09:50

A shopping trip for your new lovely figure sounds great.

I mam a bit worried though, your blue bootlegs are size 10 aren't they? Not an old pair of 16's? You want them bottom and thigh hugging with a figure like that.

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:51

Jeans are a 10, hug my bum and thighs. Only really fitted pair I own, apart from the skinnies!

OP posts:
iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 09:53

PS How did you know my wardrobe is full of stuff that doesn't fit properly ??? It so is - my mate was ticking me off last week for not wearing fitted stuff!

OP posts:
BridesheadRegardless · 11/05/2010 10:01

Bag up all the stuff that doesn't fit and put it in the loft, or better still throw it away. ( I sadly have a bag of clothes in my loft labelled 'thin clothes', I get them out occasionally and marvel at thier doll like proportions I was really thin once!)

And when you shop, make sure you get clothes that really fit and flatter, make sure things are snugly fitted to show off your figure. After years at a bigger size you've probably got used to buying clothes with a bit more room to avoid showing of the lumps and bumps. You need to change your mindset to adjust to your new figure.

The jeans sound perfect though!! Good luck with the date. Come back to this thread tomorrw and tell me how it goes. I'll check in!!

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 10:04

I am thinking, sad though this is, of going to a local department store who have personal shoppers and booking an appointment? Or is that just tragic? I want to get out of my style rut, to go with the whole new me thing? I do the hiding lumps and bumps thing all the time, as well.

If I take all the stuff that doesn't fit to the charity shop I'll have nothing left!! And if this includes my joggers and gap hoodies I'll have to go starkers - well just about!

And I will update tomorrow I promise.

OP posts:
BridesheadRegardless · 11/05/2010 10:13

I don't think it's sad, I think if you can afford it it's a really good idea.

I know I tend to buy the same things over and over. In shops I think 'oh that's nice' and realise I thnk this beacuse it's the same as the one I already have and like!! So I have thought I would benefit from advice on breaking out of this myself.

And, if the date goes well, that's a great excuse and motivation to get new clothes.

Honestly, get rid of all that doesn't fit, put it in the loft if the chairty shop seems too final. You will have at least two pairs of jeans left, and if absolutley necessary for your modesty I will allow you to keep one Gap hoody to waer shopping.

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 11:50

Ok back from emergency eyebrow appointment.

now to do nails etc - arrrggghhh

OP posts:
MrsMeow · 11/05/2010 12:24

I love the sound of bootcut jeans and turquoise top! It sounds dressy without being OTT.

Good luck on your date

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 12:36

Thanks so much everyone - feeling much more confident!

OP posts:
blinks · 11/05/2010 13:26

like the sound of it apart from denim shoes- bit 1990s sounding...

iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 15:00

blinks - The shoes are only new and I bought them with my mate with me, and she's v stylish, they're are kind of denim and brown high heels but not v v denim and not wedges.

I could just wear my black boots? Which are quite high and very comfy?

OP posts:
iamfabregasted · 11/05/2010 15:44

OK major shoe panic - just went and bought a pair of irregular choices shoes - don't know how to add a link but the style is jazz baby red multi like these
