Are Fascinators really naff ??

I have finally found a dress for my best friend's wedding which doesn't make me look like the flabby post natal blob that I actually am but it is completely black. I don't have a major problem with wearing black but would like to brighten it up with accessories.

I was thinking possibly hot pink accessories and have seen a lovely pink and black fascinator. Are they a total no no ??

dont go there, they are pointless and scream lack of sense!

BudaisintheZONE · 28/04/2010 16:44

I don't think they are a total no-no. Some like them, some hate them. Depends on if you like them.

I am in the hate camp though! Vivid memories of taking my mum to a hat rental place before my sister's wedding and the girl kept showing her fascinators and I kept saying they looked bloody ridiculous, like something just sat on her head. But you didn't want me to tell you that did you?

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/04/2010 16:47

I loathe them. To me they scream (a) Kate Middleton or (b) can't afford a hat.

they are very naff. Just buy a hat or don't bother with anything.

Hullygully · 28/04/2010 16:48

Fascinators are fab. Don't listen to the others, they don't know anything. You get yourself a great big fab fascinator and blow people's socks off!

Lulumaam · 28/04/2010 16:49

I wore one for my brother's wedding..got a plain black one from JohN lewis.twas very nice.. at jewish weddings you are supposed to have some sort of head covering'/hat and a fascinator was acceptable, and easier than a hat .

i looked into hiring one, but it was more expensive than buying one

if you like them , who cares ?"

girlscout · 28/04/2010 16:50

If you want to wear something in your hair, and its long enough to go up what about a couple of fancy but stylist clips(are they called barrettes or something).

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/04/2010 16:53

Girlscout - I read that as batteries

noddyholder · 28/04/2010 16:55

They are the naffest

florencerusty · 28/04/2010 17:02

I think they are very nice, and not everyone has the confidence to wear a hat, so maybe just the right finishing touch

Hullygully · 28/04/2010 17:04

I wore this to a friend's wedding and it was much commented upon!

noddyholder · 28/04/2010 17:06

Hully that is slightly 'more' though. You only have to watch soap weddings to see how naff they are!A beautiful hair slide or a hat

thursdaynamechange · 28/04/2010 17:07

That's fantastic Hully

I don't think they're naff and I'm a bit short for hats so I like 'em.

Hullygully · 28/04/2010 17:08

The woman in the shop told me it was a Fascinator? What is it then?

Shaz10 · 28/04/2010 17:09

I like them, but hats are better. More people should wear hats.

noddyholder · 28/04/2010 17:10

It probably is but it looks more like a hat!I like it but little head bands with bows are just not very stylish and are 'ageing at ascot' looking

florencerusty · 28/04/2010 17:27

Shaz I agree more people should wear hats - I wouldnt go to a wedding without one

BunnyLebowski · 28/04/2010 17:30

They are pure minging and scream lack of style.

Very popular at Aintree.

I bet Bonsoir (or any french woman for that matter) would never wear one.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/04/2010 17:31

Hully, imo that's a hat (and an utterly fntastic one, bet you looked amazing)

Fascinators - a big load of bows and shite on a clip on the side of your head a la Princess Katherine

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/04/2010 17:32

Oh yes Bonsoir would piss on english fascinators.

noddyholder · 28/04/2010 17:32

bunny that is exactly what I see if anyone says fascinator and the name is ridiculos!

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/04/2010 17:33

Mind you, i would love to go to a funeral and wear one of those fascinators with black net over your face, like some murderous femme fatale out of the 1930s.

So (in my book) they are acceptable funeral chic.

Cartoose · 28/04/2010 18:34

I'm def not a fan of fascinators. Sorry.

bowbluebell · 28/04/2010 18:45

My mother has just had one made for my wedding which, IMO, makes her look like some exotic bird just died on her head. I haven't quite got the heart to tell her, but it's really not good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bloody great shower on the way to the chuch which might at least make the feathers a little less pert!

lairymum99 · 28/04/2010 19:11

Black dress for a wedding?? A lot of people would have a problem with that (not me!).

How about accessorising with great shoes, handbag and jewellery instead, to really lift your outfit?

If you have to have something on your head, there are so many stylish hats out there to add some va va vroom to your dress - much more classy than a fascinator imho.

BelleDameSansMerci · 28/04/2010 19:18

Yep. Fascinators totally naff... Get a hat!
