Help me find a dress for my big birthday

OK, people of style and flair.... I'm 40 very soon. I'm having a ceilidh so outfit has to be danceable in.
I am 5ft 6 and sadly have put on weight so am now a size 12. I used to be an 8 so i have no idea how to dress for my new shape.
Still modest of norkage, but big of butt, and wide of shoulder. my colouring is fair.
My buget is fairly limited - up to £100. Please help, at this rate I'll be wearing ''jeans and a nice top''

Does it need to have sleeves? and what sort of length? Knee length? Shorter? Longer?

elliemental · 25/04/2010 17:37

don't mind what length. Be good if it was wearable after the event too. Don#t mind sleeveless, but I am bit beefy armed these days.
I have no idsea what suits me anymore.
I have a sort of boho style generally.

lolabug · 25/04/2010 17:40

Have you tried fever dresses? this or this or maybe this ....

elliemental · 25/04/2010 17:45

all nice lola, but not very 'me'. The 1st one is too figure hugging. The 2nd is lovely but don;t wanna wear black. 3rd is nice.

What do you all think of my green link though?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 25/04/2010 17:46

Hmm - Rose print?
Pretty, but maybe too short?
This is nice, but maybe too revealing?
This would look good when you're dancing.

Are any of those in the right direction?

JackieNo · 25/04/2010 17:49

I like the green one a lot - v nice.

lolabug · 25/04/2010 17:50

I liked green dress....

elliemental · 25/04/2010 17:50

jackie, i really don't like the rose print, sorry. 2nd one is v nice, but not 'special' enough', the 3rs is too revealing and the 4th is nice, might try that on in town this week..

but what do you think to green dress in my link?

OP posts:
elliemental · 25/04/2010 17:51

ah sorry x-post.

I had that green dress in mind ages ago and now it is in sale [leaving money for nice shoes!)
But I am worried it might have suited me when i was thin...

maybe a shrug with it?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 25/04/2010 17:56

Size 12 is still thin, you know . Try it - see what you think. You need the proverbial 'blunt friend' who will tell it like it really is if it's not flattering - do you have anyone like that?

I quite like this purple one too.

lolabug · 25/04/2010 17:56

how about this
this was in style mag this week I also love Mina dresses, here..

elliemental · 25/04/2010 18:00

oh jackie, I didn't mean i was fat, just a different shape IYKWIM. I have a spare tyre and muffin tops and that ...

that purple is maybe touch too 80s.

Actully lola, I like the style of that ruffle dress, but yellow not a good colour for a pale fake blonde like me

lolabug thank you so much for posting that Fever link - never heard of them despite being a hardened internet shopper and have just bought a rather lovely silver prom dress from their sale section to wear to a 40th birthday bash next weekend. Am now very !

pointydog · 25/04/2010 18:14

that green dress is lovely, deff try it on

pointydog · 25/04/2010 18:17

I like this too

JackieNo · 25/04/2010 18:22

Ooh, that Ted BAker one that pointydog linked to is lovely too! And swishy, so good for dancing in.

lolabug · 25/04/2010 18:31

Excellent sparkletastic...I love it when i'm useful!!

lolabug · 25/04/2010 18:36

or even 6061&SearchQuery=ruffle%20dress&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Navy here

lolabug · 25/04/2010 18:38

ARGHHH....such an amateur...just getting over excited as someone gave me a compliment...!

here

littlerach · 25/04/2010 18:52

Get the green one

NorkilyChallenged · 25/04/2010 19:52

Ted Baker one is lovely, imo.

Ellie, if you are small of nork then would the strapless Joe Brown one work for you? I would never think to wear strapless as would fear entire dress would fall down

elliemental · 26/04/2010 12:28

I have an incredibly good strapless bra
