handbags - what can I buy with my money

I saw a bag I quite liked in FCUK it cost just over a hundred and dp has said he would rather I spent more and bought a "proper" (his words) brand or spent less, so if I spent up to 300 what kind of brand should I be looking at? What bag would you buy with that money? Any ideas welcome.

I've just ordered a beautiful bag from Osprey, and it was 168, after the 10% discount code for signing up to emails.

Buy a bag you like. 'proper brands' are the same as any other, on the whole. Quality tends to be a bit better but it's silly buying a more expensive bag that you don't like as much. How about get the one you like, and then get another one that you like later in the year

Otherwise, lots of people like oushka bags but I personally hated the one I got.. I really like 'sissi rossi' bags, you can sometimes find them for under 200, but quite hard to source! Depends on the kind of bag you want, really.. leather? Fabric? Casual? Smart? etc

Go for the FCUK bag if you like it, that is what counts. Probably not v helpful though sorry !

CMOT- sorry to hijack- what did you order? I have ordered the Paris and am waiting for it to arrive- evidently they use parcel force so it will be 2011 before it arrives at this rate!

I bought my Osprey bag from TK Maxx for £50, rather than the £200-£225 it was originally...

I do love a oouple of the Mulberry bags what are the discounts like at the Shepton shop? Is it worth going as it would be a long trip.
Am also looking on TK Maxx but to be honest have never heard of some of the brands - I feel so old and out of touch.

Hey shiny you are neither old nor out of touch! It depends on whether you want a soft slouchy thing or a structured smarter bag, and what colour as well.

I like sissi rossi because they are really soft and unstructured and the quality of the leather is v high, so they are a good casual leather bag.. also they aren't obviously branded, so it's just the bag which I prefer

But I also have a fantasy love affair with margiela and balenciaga and lanvin bags (frightfully expensive so won't buy them or we'd be in mortgage arrears for 3 months..)

I've heard great things about the bicester village mulberry outlet, too. And theoutnet.com sometimes has some nice bags.

If you have specific requirements I'm sure there are plenty of online shopping addicts willing to help you find your perfect bag (this is my therapy )

Hi Crumpette I want leather and either creamish colour or tan or maybe black, slouchy style that goes over shoulder and big enough to wedge normal junk a few Thomas trains and a bottle in.

sorry was in RL for a while-phew I'm back OK if you're around does it have to be smart slouchy (ie could double as a work bag etc) or casual slouchy (run around full of nappies to park) or does it not really matter?

Ooh that mulberry bag is lovely but you can console yourself with the knowledge that the straps are too short to go over your shoulder, so you'd have to carry it around which is mighty useless with small children. Feel better already, yes?

shopaholic here not a problem, there is a fantastic website where you enter the bag you like, for example the mulberry one, and it amazingly finds everything online that looks the same.. it's so clever, but I cannot remember what it's called!
