Anyone interested in forming a "shop more wisely and less compulsively", "no more expensive mistakes" and "make the most of what you already own" thread?

There seems to have been a digression from the original intention of Penth's very worthy thread so, rather than cause anyone any offence or detract from what Penth and others were setting out to achieve, would anyone like to do a thread in a similar vein? Discussing potential purchases (advising each other for/ against in sensible fashion!!) and talking about how we're wearing existing pieces etc

Am off to Sunday lunch with friends but will check back in later.

Wearing purple Tam Tam dress, grey opaques, grey slouch suede boots, charcoal travelwrap for discreet bfing. Pretty exited about the sunshine so nearly cracked out the new OP sunnies but am saving for summer proper

have a good day all

I was on french connection earlier - they have som fab dresses reduced. Not a huge amount of sizes but you might get lucky.

LTEC - Its me bidding on the shoes... Ds needs a new sledge Sorry... that was low wasnt it?

Well first "occasion" in the diary -off to Aintree for the national beginning of April. So at lest its given me a goal - want at least stone and a half off by then... will also require 3 a new outfit, so can start planning now in a while

hellsbelles · 25/01/2010 19:40

oh Georgie - you'll be in trouble now

you are right on french connection dresses. A friend has been looking rather gorgeous recently and every time I ask her where she bought her outfit she says French connection and then we discuss how it used to be good, then crap and now it's good again (though I haven't checked it out yet!)

hellsbelles · 25/01/2010 19:40

oops - meant Geordie

mrsjuan · 25/01/2010 19:45

Yes, if you are a 6 or a 16 there's some lovely FC dresses left in the sale.

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 25/01/2010 19:46

Ooh.. I've just bid on thar diesel mini, seeing as you don't want it Tracey.

hellsbelles · 25/01/2010 19:46

neither unfortunatly. Boring size 12 (though trying to get to 10 asap)

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 25/01/2010 19:49

do you like these flats and these good price not sure what i'd wear them with though.

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 25/01/2010 19:53

i like these sold out though. And not really practical seeing as how it isn't quite the weather.

bunnymother · 25/01/2010 19:58

LTEC - am going against the grain, as I really like the 1st dress by Vanessa Bruno. Shiny and cheap?, just what I like in a dress

Tracey - fab purple shoes - enjoy!

Hells? - ha ha, we didn't live in a whole house in Lonsdale Square, we had a flat. But some of the families who have the whole house said they found all the stairs v annoying, as the houses are large, but arranged over 5 floors (tall and thin).

Tried on some gorgeous pewter strappy heels from LK Bennett but found they pinch, despite my relatively narrow feet. Does anyone else find their shoes narrow?

MarshaBrady · 25/01/2010 20:03

I am trying to talk myself out of buying Rick Owens merino leggings because winter is coming to an end and they might be difficult to keep in top condition. And are the sort of thing I would need to see on.

But I do so want some luxurious leggings at some point.

And missed out on a Hervé Léger bandage miniskirt from about £500 to £150. Gobsmacked, I could have owned some Hervé Léger!

carciofi · 25/01/2010 20:03

Blossoming ... yes, I do, they are my favourite jeans. Not too skinny, not too low waisted.

Bunny, I find LK Bennett shoes to be really uncomfortable, and I have quite narrow feet.

BurningBunting, I like the leopard print shoes.

Geordie, that sounds exciting. My diary is decidedly uneventful.

Off to check out Diesel skirts now

KristinaM · 25/01/2010 20:17

could someone please advise if Toast clothing sizes come up big or small? i ask only out of idle interest you understand.......

hoxtonchick · 25/01/2010 20:33

christ you lot can post . so i went into town to try the vw long sleeved stripy anglomania dress on and it looked GRIM. so that's £250 saved... however, that rather nice pink pauric sweeney bag is winging its way to me from the outnet. ahem.

traceybath · 25/01/2010 20:35

Kristina - I think toast comes up big - its cut for tall people too.

Burning - love the leopard print shoes - I'm currently hankering after these.

Marsha - as the leggings are 100% wool - I wonder if they'd get baggy knees very quickly.

MrsJ - any luck with your colours lady? I still think you'd do well to book a personal shopping session in selfridges

Fleecy · 25/01/2010 20:41

Evening all, just checking in. Have been out at my sister's all day with our DC. Had six cakes at lunch so may be going up a size soon!

I have Top Shop denim mini. 'Tis very short but have had it about five years and it's worn well. Someone wanted a bandage skirt - I have a cobalt blue one with gold zip, £25 from Top Shop. It was early Autumn but they may still have some?

My DH is a professional gambler. It's not for everyone but he only works a couple of hours a day and does practically all the housework so I'm not complaining! He's also slowly building up his own accountancy clients but the longterm plan is for us both to work p/t from home.

Thanks for the dress tips - off to check them out then must do some work...

KristinaM · 25/01/2010 20:46

thanks tracey, i am 5'5'' so will risk it. if i were shopping which I'm not. i'm just browsing

hoxtochick - i am TOTALLTY convinced by the " i saved £250 on not buying a dress so i spent £400 on a bag" line

BTW if I asked you very nicely would you not post Christ like that? I'm sure that you dont mean to offend and you're just using it for ..ahem..emphasis but it does upset some people

ta ever so

eshermummy · 25/01/2010 20:58

Gosh this thread moves so fast it's hard to keep up.

Who was it who suggested a January inventory of things bought? I am almost too scared to tot it all up......
I couldn't resist the toast archive sale (for me it's a bit of an institution now) but was pretty restrained (relatively speaking) but as traceybath says I am drawing a line under winter and am going to draw up a list for spring and stick to it.

Carciofi - shame about the ash trainers although did you look here - cheaper too . I have decided against them for now as although I would like a pair in tan/metallic leather I think I prefer the hi-top style.

The jacket I ordered as a possible boyf style jacket for spring from toast was one in the darker brown.
I am also thinking of ordering grey one from ASOS (and to get free delivery shirt.)
Comments please.

Grey would be better than brown for boyf jacket but not sure about the shoulder detail on the whistles one.
Bit panicked into buying in sales as want something that is warm and think all the new h=jackets coming in will more likley be cotton than wool mixes and too thin to wear as coat.

What do we think of oversized white shirts? I tried a few last winter but couldn't escape the Russell Brand effect when worn with skinnies so they all went back, but this one looks wider and boxier

LTEC - I really like that snake dress but sadly not in my size . You are the queen of NAP - I look often but can never see these gems when I do

KristinaM - toast sizing I would say small to true (disclaimer it is a bit random though from item to item) - I take a topshop 8 and take a toast 8 but would say is cut for the small of bust and hip so upsize if you have either

CHOOGIRL · 25/01/2010 21:09

Hi Ladies - I'm back from work after a 15 hour day and seen how this thread has grown. I feel like my mates have gone out for drinks without me Still not figured out how to post on iphone so will lurk by day and post by night.

Went to the office looking like a corporate stereotype today - black shift, black jacket, black Louboutins.

Really like the Antik sandals - they are in my NAP wish list for when they come back into stock.

I'm also quite keen on the Mulberry Alexa, but I don't consider Ms Chung a style icon so that is putting me off. I may put the money towards my Hermes fund. BTW Has anyone seen BobtheWoodmouse lately?

LTEC ime the Casterner wedges come up small. The strap does not fall down. I may get another pair in black.

LTEC have you seen the tibi on NAP You lusted after this last year and they have it in your size.

eshermummy · 25/01/2010 21:17

doofus, forgot to link

1.can't link to boyf jacket option 1 as toast site knackered again
2.boyf jacket option 2
3.white shirt

florenceuk · 25/01/2010 21:19

I would say they are loose fitting but intentionally so - the fine wool/tencel tops are perfect for me but I like a slightly baggy look (but not big under the arms). The skirt and trousers I have tried seem to be right for a (slightly potbellied thick-waisted) size 10. The dress came up a bit big. If you are into a more fitted look they are not for you!

hellsbelles · 25/01/2010 21:21

HC - I bet the long sleeved one is the same cut as the red one I tried on. Not amazing (hence mine is going back as well)...did you try the sleeveless as well (which I think looks a lot better on).

florenceuk · 25/01/2010 21:28

I was referring to Toast sizing! now long down the thread.

hoxtonchick · 25/01/2010 21:37

no, they only had the longsleeved one. the short one does look a lot more flattering....

Fleecy · 25/01/2010 21:50

What do we think of these for my go-with-pretty-much-anything sandals this summer?

Fleecy · 25/01/2010 21:52

Or this bag for cropped jeans and vest combos?

Am drinking wine tonight - I blame it for my imminent drop right off the no-shopping wagon...
