Mini skirt and leggings in your thirties?

FlamingoBingo · 28/10/2009 12:03

I'm a petite size 10. I'd like to show off my new slim legs (been running a lot and losing weight) in leggings but can I really get away with a mini skirt at my age?

Ok, I'm not in my thirties yet - got another couple of months to go, but I am a mother of four. Will I look like mutton dressed as lamb? Or does it depend on what sort of mini skirt I choose?

Please someone help me? I'm very style-challenged.

God - you're young!

I do leggings and longish/close fitting tops and I'm older than you.

Think if you've got good legs its fine.

Gawd I hope so! I'm 44 and half my wardrobe is above the knee skirts with or without leggings/tights.

Oh, and I've got some lovely red leather flat pumps to wear with whatever I get if I do get anything!

Ok, so how do I wear it and what do I wear?

I can't wear dresses because I'm still bfing. I tried on a dark grey denim mini skirt in Asda and I just looked far too old for it! But maybe that's just because I'm not used to it - last time I showed off my legs I was about 10 years younger!

It's the 'mum of four' thing that makes me think I ought to dress older more than my age I think.

So can anyone stylish post some links to some pictures of things I could look out for?

Petite size 10 and not 30 yet - what are you waiting for?

What about a nice tunic top and leggings? if you do a mini you need to get one that doesn't look cheap and teenagery!

exactly, tilly - so what do I want, though? What miniskirts don't look cheap and teenagery?

Can't wear tunic tops as breastfeeding - would have to keep hoiking it all the way up

Miniskirt- yesyesyes!
Leggings- nonono... step away.

Go for opaque tights instead- any colour you like, looks sooo much better, especially with flat pumps- leggings tend to 'break up' the silhouette IYSWIM. Legs look longer and more elegant in tights IMO.

Would also suggest buying some ankle boots to go with the mini.

Wish I had nice legs

Gosh, are you a size 10 FB? Wow, you never said.

If it was a flirty Joe Brown style skirt, I would do leggings....like today, but for denim would agree with thick tights,

I bet you look amazing...

What's a flirty joe brown style skirt?

tethersend - those are nice but I think I'd be better with something less tight maybe? Also, I have a muffin top due to lovely excess skin thanks to pregnancies! So need to be able to wear a not-too-tight top IYSWIM.

joe browns here, but I have to say I don't like the skirt much! THe first one tethersend linked to looked nice, though.

Tunics are great for hiding muffin tops! White Stuff and Fat Face do lots and this is nice

FB, I am a size 8-10, lost lots running too a couple of years ago. I am just above my mid 30s , and regularly wear leggings with long tunic top, or a mini, or even denim shorts. I did ask DP if I was too old to wear denim shorts over leggings, he looked shifty and said "yes, probably you are". Wore them anyway and no-one looked at me strangely.

Go for it.

I love wearing mini skirts in winter at least and am 33. I have a few nice mini dresses I wear with opaque tights and over the knee but flat boots. My mum bought me a nice mini for a tenner in Next. I am not a fan of Next but they outdid themselves with the belted mini cord skirt I ordered on line which made me look like I had a large penis (I don't)

If I am wearing a short skirt I make sure I am wearing flat boots, thick tights and often a polo neck or a top which doesn't display my boobs.

I too am still bfing though dd is 17 months so I can get away with dresses as she rarely feeds when we're out. Tunic tops are fine though. I bought loads of tight cheap vests in Peacocks (£5 for 3) and wear them under tunics so when I lift them up I still have something covering me (I usually then pull the vest down with my bra to feed)

Leggings are great too worn in the right way. I wear them with long boots or Uggs and long tops / waterfall cardis.

I've reread my message and just wanted to point out that I don't have a penis at all - large or otherwise.

Thanks all - I love some of the ones you posted tethersend. I'm now thinking I might have a go at making myself a mini-skirt........I've spent far too much money on clothes lately!
