if you are a little old lady like me (35+) where do you get your style advice from?

have just bought a magazine full of teenagers jumping around in neon crappe

will be 40 soon (god) and want to look stylish and eclectic and watnot and keep up with fashion but not slavishly etc etc

obv this does not include neon crappe

any blogs or websites or magazines I can look at from time to time to ensure I do not end up looking like my mother?

Just bookmarking to track responses, as I'm another little old frump lady of almost 40 (eeek) who needs an injection of style

If you can ignore some of the Heat-style articles, Grazia can be okay. IMO, I do think they have become more sleb oriented in the last 6 months and so I don't buy it as often as I would have done previously.

I love Vogue and it isn't always hugely expensive items being showcased in there either.

I would love to find a website or blog which gave ideas/inspiration for complete outfits. Sites like mywardrobe.com and netaporter.com have inspiration pages but the clothes are listed as individual items rather than "put together" on model. I kind of want to know how other people might put together things to give it their own individual twist etc.

If you think you are old at 35 and 40 you really do need help.

nah - I don't feel old - I just dress like it !! I don't have the best figure in the world and have spent years hiding it under shapeless, comfortable, frumpy clothing more suitable to that belonging to an older lady

I personally would like to find a style more appropriate to my age that doesn't age me prematurely Not sure what the OP wanted, but I'm guessing something similar

I think bbbp's argument that the magazine she had bought was full of teenagers in neon crappe was a valid one - there are many of them out there and they don't appeal to me either.

I certainly don't feel old at 38. I love fashion mags but there are times when you feel "FFS, can we not have some fashion for grown ups??!!" Models will always be young and beautiful.....has always been thus......but trying to work out how their look can translate to an everyday look for the average woman can be a challenge!

Aren't you old enough yet to have worked out your own style, and see what aspects of current fashion work for you and what don't?

and the idea of investment dressing in endless grey things just makes me want to jump off a cliff

i quite like Gok's (C4 fashion shows) advice. But other than than C4 sites of his programmes, I am not awAre of any official websites for him.

one moment, I have just found www.gokstyle.org/ , this is being launched as an online fashion community inspired by him, I will investigate.

I have my own style at 43 and always had, I pick what fits my shape from the high street, there is always something young and current I can get away with by incorporating it with other longer lasting items.

I think your best bet is to try stuff on and not go by models in mags etc etc.

Maybe work out your body shape and then take it from there. A good book is Colour me Confident- you can work out your colours and body shape and then the style that suits you- might pick it up on Ebay.

Basically, try shops that you might not go into normally. I am a lot older than you and buy from:
Kew, Jigsaw, Monsoon ( not much ever), Top Shop ( odd knit), White Stuff, White Company and lots of Boden ( sorry). I also think Ted Baker has some nice stuff for younger - like you- people.

I have learned over the years that I have to go fitted as I am only 5'3", and size 10- so avoid long, droopy, chunky, over embellished, and keep it simple and neat.

I also try to steer away from anything remotely classic or that I think anyone aged 70 would think was "nice".

You need to work out what suits you best.

I would love to be Gokked as at the heady age of 49, I'm still struggling to find "my style"- partly because I'm not stock size (VERY tall) and partly I suspect due to my neuroses and body dysmorphia(I blame it on my mother!)
I think I'm getting there- have just bought some "key" pieces,and am really trying hard not to buy unflattering things.
I have just sent back a mammoth Next order, but the 2 items which arrived today (skinny black jeans and slim leg smart trousers)are perfect.
I buy Red and Woman and Home- some good stuff in there.

That pantsuit that Courtney is wearing looks like something from Abigail's Party. The wide-legged trousers look good on her though (without the too long coat) and so do the skinny jeans.

Am 43,and read She,Red,Easy Living,and Woman and Home.Actually,Woman and Home can be great in the fashion stakes for 40+ women.
Also Grazia,and I peek at my DD's Heat etc.
I do think there is a gap in the market for the 35plus ladies,both magazine wise and shop wise also.

Easy Living has grown-up fashion but it's pricey

I quite like Red. The fashion stuff pictured in Easy Living is obscenely expensive - a pair of wellies (ie eco-chic/grow your own/down with the land type fashion) for 300 quid featured a few months ago - at which point I cancelled my subscription.

The Times style stuff is sometimes good too.

The Grauniad Weekend mag on Saturdays has a fashion section that shows how to work a 'look' for different ages. I quite often don't like the one that's age appropriate but it's quite useful for ideas.

SHE (quite a good read) - but TBH you need to find what suits your shape as well as what you are comfy in.

Have you got a close friend who will tell you the truth about how you actually look as opposed to what she thinks you want to hear?

What about checking out other women with the same figure as you and seeing what suits their shape but personalising it for you?

I lost my way after having my first bubba but have found myself again LOL - still need to lose another 1 stone to feel better though!
