frigging awesome!

I used a method from this thread and then something similar to trim the back.
I did have same length below shoulder hair and now it is all layered and light and pretty.
And it took 10 minutes in the kitchen with a brush, hairband and some scissors!

wow this is still going strong then! amazing, glad its working for everyone, its so funny to think of mumsnetters across the country all doing their ponytail cuts isnt it!

Rhubarb · 21/04/2009 14:48

Erm, I should be on that list because I usually cut my own hair.

I put my head over the bath and cut the length that way. I did try the ponytail method, on dd first then me. Trouble is our hair isn't quite long enough. I may do what someone else suggested and have another ponytail at the top of the head to get at the length.

JackBauer · 21/04/2009 14:54

I can't add you unless you have teh official MN.

The back of my hair didn't fit in teh pnoytail so I just did one further back and it worked fine. I did it on teh crown at dead centre so that it woudl be symetrical though, if that helps!

I just said I used the ponytail! I did say that!

Have you seen dd on my profile pics after her MN haircut?
PUT ME ON THE GODDARN LIST!

2Happy · 21/04/2009 15:23

Have done it!!!

I really like the effect, really nice layers and taken a lot of weight off my (very thick) hair. Not completely satisfied with the length, may get dh to take a bit off the bottom when he gets home. I'm not sure why, but when I went over it again, it didn't seem to get much shorter, just more layered. Probably being dim... Hey ho, will definitely be doing it again. Will load pics in a mo, ds1 just woken up (what timing!)

Thanks, JB!

2Happy · 21/04/2009 15:38

OK have uploaded pics. Don't think they're great pics, but never mind. I cut it dry after it had been in a ponytail all day and haven't styled it or anything, so reckon a little axtra off the bottom and a straighten and I shall be a new lady! Ish.

2Happy · 21/04/2009 15:38

Or indeed Extra

EyeballsintheSky · 21/04/2009 15:43

Right, I'm going to do mine tomorrow. I have frizzy wavy hair but have been straightening it the last few days and really like it. So, am going to take a little bit off and see what happens... Scared and excited here

JeanPoole · 21/04/2009 16:36

does this only work if you have or want a fringe?

ProfYaffle · 21/04/2009 16:43

I am sooooo tempted to do this, the only thing stopping me is if it goes wrong and I go to the hairdressers and they do that "did you cut this yourself?" thing. It's bringing me out in a cold sweat.

VictorianSqualor · 21/04/2009 17:00

Just say "No My sister's friend did, apparently she is a qualified hairdresser but I was fuming when I saw the state of it'

sockmonkey · 21/04/2009 17:13

I've done it.

Was going to wait till tomorrow, but was feeling brave. It's great. No pics though, sorry.

ProfYaffle · 21/04/2009 17:18

LOl VS, will remember that!

elfinblast · 21/04/2009 17:19

Add me to the I've done it list.

I can't afford a proper haircut (been twice in 10 years, last time was when I got married, and it bores me stupid sat there while they snip away for hours) so usually hack bits off myself with the kitchen scissors.

DD's looked on fascinated, then amused, then in horror as I chopped the end of the ponytail off, then they looked quite impressed when I revealed the finished effect.

Saltire · 21/04/2009 17:26

I saw 3 women in town today with similar hairstyles and thought "I wondered if the MN"

asuwere · 21/04/2009 18:19

JeanPoole - I don't have a fringe and din't want one, I just put the ponytail a bit further back and it's fine

meggymoosmum · 21/04/2009 18:34

Oooooooooooh i'm gonna do mine later once dd is in bed!!! Haven't had a haircut for aaages and in desperate need of one!

DitaVonCheese · 21/04/2009 19:07

I'm going to do this tomorrow - just need to get some decent scissors

giraffesCantRunA10k · 21/04/2009 19:21

wow home page!!!

Umlellala · 21/04/2009 19:48

What a great technique, thanks! Have been cutting my own hair for years (have a kind of short/pob thing. posh spice's hair not the character who went pfffftttttt) but did this today and made the front look great still got to sort out the back but v pleased. Was actually considering going to the hairdresser (did go last year sometime).

So do I qualify - as a short version of the mumsnet?!

troutpout · 21/04/2009 19:58

that looks really nice!
I have a fro so won't be trying it ..but very nice

JeanPoole · 21/04/2009 20:08

asuwere where abouts do you , do the pony? in the middle of the back of your head, or like a high pony?

EyeballsintheSky · 21/04/2009 20:19

Oh I really want to try it now. I haven't been near a hairdresser since I got married in 2000 and am bored arseless with my hair. I am trying to wait until tomorrow so that I am finished work for the week and won't get the piss ripped out of me when it looks shitey.

MammaPiggy · 21/04/2009 20:19

jean have you watched the video clip? the ponytail is meant to go on the front of your head!

how are ya anyway jp, alright?

JeanPoole · 21/04/2009 20:26

yeah i watched the vid but i don't have a fringe and don't want one so i don't know where exactley to put the pony.

im really good thanks mamapiggy, ive just done a thread on chat saying
"today i have had such a great day with dd
we went to the country park for a picnic and walk feed the ducks.
with my friend and her dd
