It is freezing and I need a new coat

I have a dressy one to wear into town etc.

I need a more practical one to wear when walking the dog, walking with dd and for work when on duty outside.

I am a size 18 which limits my choices somewhat and although I want practicality I dont want to look like a michelin man or fool.

this may be a better length

brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:41

yes they do

you could always try it and return

my dh has short jacket version and it is really really warm

gotta go to work now-hope you find one

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 20:42

But it does look like a BHS coat again

OP posts:
brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:42

GawdAllMighty · 01/02/2009 20:45

I am similar height and shape to you and I would love this for country walks.

hi this might be a bit classic and old fashioned for you,but I wear a duffle coat to walk the dog. It's got nice big pockets for holding dog bags and a hood. You can wear it with anything.Mine was cheap from tescos a few years ago,but I think boden do some nice coloured ones.It doesn't look or feel too bulky.

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 21:10

I saw that one drum when I looked through the archives, how does it deal with getting wet?

That landse d linkdoesn't work - is it one of the two mentioned previously? Because they are rather anorakey - the Newmarket Barbour is much nicer. And it won't make you look more old, just more stylish. Wear something that flatters you.

YeToxicHighRoad · 01/02/2009 21:45

Any good?{{www.bestinthecountry.co.uk/Ladies...}}

YeToxicHighRoad · 01/02/2009 21:48

Sorry try again www.bestinthecountry.co.uk/Ladies.... In case it doesn't work, it's a stockman's coat. My DH has one and it's really warm, and a young, stylish mum I know wears a navy one which looks great.

Metatron · 01/02/2009 21:51

shorter squall

YeToxicHighRoad · 01/02/2009 21:52

Oh I give up - they're also known as Drize a Bone.

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 22:23

The long ones toxic

I agree the others look anorakey. WE have a local barbour stockists I may go and try one on.

Infact the shooting shop in town may sell them which is a 2 minute walk.

YeToxicHighRoad · 01/02/2009 23:00

I think I'll save up for a long stockman-type thing or a Newmarket for next winter. I'm sure there was a firm who made more shapely and colourful waxed jackets a couple of years ago (when I was still resistant to getting a Barbour), but I can't remember what they were called. (pointless comment).

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 23:21

Some of the barbours are more tailored.

OP posts:
KristinaM · 02/02/2009 07:58

oh tailored is good [ Kristina reconsiders her barbour prejudice]

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 12:55

I bought a landsend coat, it's like a rip off of the north face metropolis parka, do you know the one I mean! still expensive at half the price of the north face one, but SO warm! I'm so glad i bought it. I'm less afraid of winter now.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 12:57

I have barbour prejudice too! I expect barbour wearers to smoke cheroots and have four labradors (minimum). A volvo with one of those mean looking prison grills, to stop said labs dribbling on driver of the 1978 volvo.

eughghghgh.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 12:59

What's the company that kate humbles models coats and outdoor gear for?? I nearly ordered a coat from there, their coats were all lovely, but they were out of the one i wanted.

does anybody know the company i mean??

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 13:01

found it! aigle, looks a good site, has the dreaded barbour too

YeToxicHighRoad · 02/02/2009 14:17

Those Agles are not bad, but they do look a bit manly.
I'm still sticking out for the tailored Barbour.
I also had a prejudice against them, but as T & P says, if you live in the country you look like a loon shivering in your fashionable coat - and not everyone can carry off the Nanook of the North look.

bestfriendswithbenefits · 02/02/2009 14:27

I have this one

www.trespass.co.uk/PageProducer.aspx?Template=ProductDetail&Category=Women&Type=JACKET&Product=FAJKS KD20052

which is very much like the North Face one, is very warm and only cost about £55.

twinsetandpearls · 02/02/2009 18:01

I am tempted by the nortface one linked to earlier but am worried I will look michelin like as it is padded. Can you try landsend ones on somewhere or is it just mail order/
