It is freezing and I need a new coat

I have a dressy one to wear into town etc.

I need a more practical one to wear when walking the dog, walking with dd and for work when on duty outside.

I am a size 18 which limits my choices somewhat and although I want practicality I dont want to look like a michelin man or fool.

I would say uniqlo too. That brown one you linked too is a little on the shiny side.

duckyfuzz · 01/02/2009 19:32

and the same site has the mountain equipment one in a 16 and for less ££, its a generous cut (I am 14-16 and 14 is big on me)

mysterymoniker · 01/02/2009 19:35

you just can't beat a barbour

YeToxicHighRoad · 01/02/2009 19:44

I thought the Newmarket Barbour was best, though higher than your budget.
I'm like you, I only like fitted classc wool coats, feel common and ugly in padded ones/ anoraks.
I've just bought a padded Columbia one as a ski jacket, but also to wear for dog walking, watching sports etc. - but it has a furry hood!
If you google 'ski jackets' you'll come up with loads of sites selling variations of the ubiquitous fitted, padded jackets, which are very warm, but I think if I were you I'd push the boat out for a Barbour.
If you always wear a bright, feminine scarf you won't feel quite so hideous in whatever practical coat you choose.
We've been in the country for six years now - maybe it's about time I bought a Barbour!

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:47

I looked on uniqlo and they had nothing. I like the newmarket barbour I think.

I like that northface one and it is a bargain ducky

sorry to hijack

Twinset, did you ever get your wedding blues sorted out?

cariboo · 01/02/2009 19:52

Would you be willing to try eBay? Or there's Sierra Trading Post... I bought a £600 coat online for half the price with them.

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:55

what wedding blues?

I am more than happy to use ebay.

I linked to a barbour trader on ebay above

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:59

sierra trading is fab.

cariboo · 01/02/2009 20:01

I remember you were agonising over a wedding (yours) & I've often wondered how (or if) you resolved it.

KristinaM · 01/02/2009 20:04

twinset - are you not too young for a barbour?

duckyfuzz · 01/02/2009 20:09

I think the north face one is fab and have also found bargain coats on that site for the DTs, so I'm glad I looked

I agree btw, you are too young for a barbour - you are at least 5 yrs younger than me and I'm too young for one

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 20:13

I dont give a shit about being too old or young I just want a warm jacket that will last.

It is barbour land round here so I have a feeling there is no such thing as too young.

We never got married and dont think we ever will.

OP posts:
KristinaM · 01/02/2009 20:16

are you allowed to co-habit in barbourland?

cariboo · 01/02/2009 20:18

That's too bad, twinset.

SniffyHock · 01/02/2009 20:18

www.barbourbymail.co.uk/newproduct.aspx?ProductStyleID=109960&utm_source=Barbour_Online&utm_medium=r eferral I like this Barbour - I am pregnant at the moment so seems mad to buy it. They have a size 18 in navy which would be very slimming and it's in the sale!

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 20:19

Everyone thinks we are married and I have grown tired of correcting them.

When we signef for our house the estate agent said to dp"Do you send your wife out to work?"

OP posts:
brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:22

this?

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 20:25

I would look like an overstuffed vauxhall conference football club manager in that ggirl.

OP posts:
brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:27

lololol at football manager

brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:29

brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:30

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 20:39

I am 5'2" would it not be really long on me?

God I am difficult

OP posts:
brimfull · 01/02/2009 20:40
