Heartfelt PLEA - from a broken man

Bear · 07/01/2009 17:46

Hi there - again I'm using Mumsnet as a last resort, when I know it should always be my first. Where to begin....?

Last month DW gave me her Christmas list in dribs and drabs. It was down to me to get some stuff for her and farm out the rest to family who wanted to know what she'd like. I raced round and got a few things and the rest I shared out - giving them a bit of a choice so as not to be to grabbingly prescriptive.

Anyway - as a result of giving people a choice, one thing got missed and it turns out it was the thing she wanted the most (unbeknownst to me) - a cardi. In fact when we travelled to my folks' after Christmas, she didn't pack a jumper thinking it'd be under the tree. And she was cold, poor dear.

It's this one from Top Shop (Chunky Roll Neck Short Sleeved Cardi and not a similar one in their Maternity range - heaven forfend!) in Ice Blue or Wine, size 12.

I've sworn to do my best to get her it (she deserves it), but they no longer have it on line and none of the three (massive) Top Shops I've visited have it and I've been told there's little to no chance they will again as they're stocking with Spring lines now. I've tried eBay, but to no avail.

Here's the thing - if you see one that fits the bill on the shelves or sale racks in a TS near you, would you let me know & pick it up for me; or even if you have/received one yourself and aren't really sure about it, would you let me know? Please. I will of course Paypal cost and shipping toot sweet. TIA

Or even if you work in Top Shop and could tip me off how I might go about locating one, I'd be super-grateful!!

S'got short sleaves - she'd have been cold anyway

Bear · 07/01/2009 17:51

That's the kind of thing I'd say and get very short shrift - apparently you wear long sleeves beneath it. Women's clothes always have and always will bewilder me...

have you tried calling topshop?

i know there is an outlet topshop in edgware where they sell end of lines.

Doodle2U · 07/01/2009 18:02

They bewilder me too, Bear. That's why I stick to jeans and fleeces. Oh, and very thick, comfy socks - night attire doesn't differ much either. DH asked me if I'd like him to fetch me a balaclava the other night!

Dunno if you'll have any luck with this plea but the odd time I've wandered into Style & Beauty, the other folk who play here are incredibly helpful - so fingers crossed!

southeastastra · 07/01/2009 18:05

they have a teal size 14 on ebay

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 18:10

Will she be Ok if you don't find one?

Tbh you sound rather like you are cornered.

I am concerned for your welfare.

Bear · 07/01/2009 18:16

when in a corner, mobilise MN

I'll point her towards the eBay listing to see if that would work and I've emailed Topshop - thanks

But in the meantime, if anyone else can help, please post. Thanks all

bear you sound a lovely husband...i will look in my topshop tom..

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 18:42

I'm gonna declare an interest here. Do you know what I got for Christmas? SOCKS. SOCKS I tell you.
From my dear parents.

I didn't have a list.

I'm jealous!

but don't you think she is being a little bit demanding? Surely she could make do with a similar model from another shop...or something...surely she doesn't really expect you to go completely nuts trying to locate this holy grail?

I might be way off line so am sorry if so., but I just don't get it.

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 18:43

I am betting she will be fed up if you suggest she gets a 14.
That could be misconstrued on so many levels...!

Doodle2U · 07/01/2009 18:45

Now, see, I would have been delighted with socks! I got...well, never you mind what i got, tis too embarrassing to admitt to on here but love those socks, Flight, you lucky woman, you!

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 18:47

No they are lovely socks but they were very necessary and a bit, well, sockish. Not exciting, like you know, a topshop cardi or anything.

I asked for them, as I really needed them. But I would feel weird if I had a whole list. i think I am just jealous actually...ignore me...

Doodle2U · 07/01/2009 18:49

TBH Flight, I don't think I could dream up a whole list! It nearly killed me to think of the two things I asked for when DH pestered me for ideas!

I'm a cheap date!

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 18:52

Lol at cheap date, I think we are similar!

Jacksmama · 07/01/2009 19:01

If she was being demanding then so was I , really really really wanted a particular down vest and dropped hints everywhere I could...
Bear, you sound lovely. Wish I could help you but live in Canada.

Bear · 07/01/2009 19:02

thanks ladies - Top Shop emailed back with a standard "we can't locate stock from this office" so throwing myself back on your mercy

She's not demanding - she didn't ask for that much, I messed up is all.

I got her socks once - still hearing about it years later....they were beautifully wrapped tho' AND they're still in service - quality present that was.

I'm with ya flight..I was a bit and at the list.

Have you tried primark?

Doodle2U · 07/01/2009 19:09

Bear, they seem to have the blue one in stock in a size 14. Not much difference in sizes and for that cardi, you want a bit of room to house the great, thick, long sleeved, woolly vest you'd need underneath!

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 19:10

Maybe all my boyfriends have been mean and horrible but I have never met one who would post on a womens forum to locate a late present for me.

You are truly going to the ends of the earth Mr Bear. Either she is very lucky or you have something to prove

LaTrucha · 07/01/2009 19:11

What about a 10? I've got one very similar in 12 and I'm a 14. Any good?

Flightattendant7 · 07/01/2009 19:11
Bear · 07/01/2009 20:36

it's got to be a 12 (I ain't getting that wrong) and it 's got to be blue or wine (not teal)

I'm keeping looking...

FA7: there's always something to prove

Would this do?

See, I was Googling "Roll neck cardigan" and look what I found! Wonder if it works?
