What do Birkenstock wearers mean to you?

Do you think Lentil Weaver? Or Boden Yummy Mummy type? Or Hearty Walker/Outdoorsy type? Or nothing much?

I have to confess here that I own Birkenstock sandals - and yes, I know it doesn't matter what people think but I want to know if they have connotations, IYSWIM. I'm thick-skinned, btw .

funky birds that like comfy feet!

flowerybeanbag · 06/08/2008 10:55

What woodenchair said.

twoluvlykids · 06/08/2008 11:01

they look great, but i think they're uncomfortable.i got some FitFlops yesterday, hoping to get a nice toned lower half, only worn them round house (BIT wet outside!) and now my toes are sore . anyone else got them & suffered like me?

belgo · 06/08/2008 11:03

I'd say yummy mummy because the only woman I know who wears them is a posh yummy mummy!

wasabipeanut · 06/08/2008 11:05

Writing as a serial Birkie wearer with several pairs in variou colours I agree with woodenchair.

Hassled · 06/08/2008 11:07

Phew!

twoluvlykids - mine aren't the fitflop type - I have these in silver - and for the first few days were really uncomfortable, but now are like wearing slippers.

I have about 10 pairs of Birkies, so I would have to agree with woodenchair too!

mindalina · 06/08/2008 11:10

Comfy feet! I got mine a few weeks ago on advice of some kindly mumsnetters and now I feel naked without them

twoluvlykids · 06/08/2008 11:12

hassled - they look fab! I gave up on FlipFlops a few years back & wore Crocs but dd persuaded me into FlipFlops form Animal (which are really comfy) & FitFlops (she wanted the points on her Boots loyalty card!) & the worn out Crocs went into the recycling lorry today!DH happy to see the back of them

BananaSkin · 06/08/2008 12:35

The mums that wear them at school are usually the yummy mummies - but they don't wear the heavy-looking ones.

wasabipeanut · 06/08/2008 12:36

I am particularly loving my purple patent pair at the moment.

theexmrsfederer · 06/08/2008 13:31

I am a dedicated Birkie wearer and I am fab.

robinpud · 06/08/2008 13:34

chic, witty and gorgeous obviously

katz · 06/08/2008 13:37

i've just bought a new pair to replace my worn out ones. amazon have loads in their sale, mine were £19.95 instead of £38 and free p and p

wastingmyeducation · 06/08/2008 16:53

Mental Lentil. Just like me!
Actually the only other people I have personally seen wearing Birkenstocks were on my MA course, so I'd say creative, intelligent and cutting-edge.

xx

wasabipeanut - me too!

MrsMuddle · 06/08/2008 17:39

Ha ha - I've just realised that it's wasabi peanut. In my head you were "was a bi peanut"

giddykipper · 06/08/2008 17:40

Yep, what wooden chair said. We are a family of Birki wearers, DS is the only one that doesn't have more than one pair

FeelingLucky · 06/08/2008 19:10

Wow, didn't realise so much kudos attached to Birki wearers. I've been wearing them fro 8 years now

paolosgirl · 06/08/2008 19:15

Round here I think "ooh, been to TK-Maxx then" - they're always selling them cheap!

cthea · 06/08/2008 19:20

The pair I bought last summer is falling to bits. I don't begrudge the money as I almost didn't wear anything else, but I'm surprised to read others wear them for longer.

cthea · 06/08/2008 19:21

Oh, as for what I think of wearers, it's "no imagination, goes with the crowd". (Remember, I have them too.)

jafina · 06/08/2008 19:24

I think "trying to be cool but really just want to be comfy" because that's what I am . Birkies are for yummy mummy boden types ime. I have 3 pairs......and occasionally shop at boden .

Dottoressa · 06/08/2008 19:24

Gap year students with trust funds!

That said, they sell them in Costco.

I'm sure I'd have a pair if I didn't find them so horribly uncomfortable.
