What do Birkenstock wearers mean to you?

Do you think Lentil Weaver? Or Boden Yummy Mummy type? Or Hearty Walker/Outdoorsy type? Or nothing much?

I have to confess here that I own Birkenstock sandals - and yes, I know it doesn't matter what people think but I want to know if they have connotations, IYSWIM. I'm thick-skinned, btw .

To me they mean people with nice feet - ie my feet are so disgusting I could never wear anything like that!

nickytwotimes · 06/08/2008 19:27

To me they are for the yummy mummy Boden types.

Gobbledigook · 06/08/2008 19:29

Erm, Boden yummy mummy for me.

Probably because I wear them and am taking 3 pairs on holiday and that's it for footwear!

I am taking black patent, purple patent and silver

Quattrocento · 06/08/2008 19:31

I think that they have hard feet - those birkie soles are too moulded and hard for comfort.

theexmrsfederer · 06/08/2008 19:49

I have lovely feet.

Quattrocento · 06/08/2008 19:52

Hard feet

with possibly chafed/worn heels

not sure about the ankles though.

cthea · 06/08/2008 19:53

4C - they aren't! I'm a new convert to Birkis, they are very comfortable and not as ugly as Crocs.

theexmrsfederer · 06/08/2008 19:56

quattro, speak for yaself

my feet are smooth as a babys bum

Birkies will only do that to your feet if they are too small

mamaberta · 06/08/2008 20:02

German lesbians!

Only because I knew a couple who wore them 20 years ago. Obviously they were ahead of their time and I am just being prejudiced (about the shoes not the sexuality bit . They are quite ugly but then so are Crocs, Ughs etc. People like 'em because they're comfy so why not? My footwear is all naff cos the kids and animals chew it and I never have time to clean any of it so am in no position to criticise anyone elses!

cthea · 06/08/2008 20:04

at Ughs.

JT · 06/08/2008 20:05

they mean 'it's my daughter'

I think I associate fat ankles with Birkies. Not, you know, grossly overweight, just a bit of excess pudge as a two year old might have.

DoubleBluff · 06/08/2008 20:09

I think - why didn't they get them in Next for half the price?

uptomyeyes · 06/08/2008 20:09

I've been wearing birks for about 17 years Currently have three pairs on the go milano, arizona and ghizo. I think mine are bit more lentil weaver than yummy mummy.

Hassled · 06/08/2008 20:09

Actually now I think about it my feet were soft and presentable pre-Birkenstocks, yet now I can sand floors just by walking barefoot. Still too comfortable to abandon though.

NigellaTheOriginal · 06/08/2008 20:10

discovered that you can chuck birks in the washing machine - come out like new!

Snaf · 06/08/2008 20:15

They mean 'me and my mates'. Except that I've lost mine

(I have beautiful feet and lovely slim ankles btw...)

woodenchair · 07/08/2008 14:13

really Nigella? That's fab, have a pair that I've stopped wearing because they pong so much, it might give them a new lease of life"

CountessDracula · 07/08/2008 14:15

omg
I thought they were unwashable because of the cork base

I am SO happy!

CountessDracula · 07/08/2008 14:17

For all you birkie fans - can I also recommend Footprints trainers - suedey ones - they are made by Birkenstock and are fabulously comfy

izzybiz · 07/08/2008 14:19

I love my Birkis!
Most comfortable sandles in the world!

Even my 4 year old Dd wears them

CountessDracula · 07/08/2008 14:20

I have these they are like slippers and last forever
