In contrast, I was going to say absolutely chunky boots!!

But then a 1930s black & orange devoré silk-velvet slip dress, worn with lace-up DM or Red or Dead boots, was my favourite clubbing outfit in the 90s ... so I may be influenced by nostalgia!!

I wouldn't lean into metallics just because it's a new year party (see also sequins).

Slouchy boots would work well. In fact a lot of boot styles would.

Be careful with any sandal/strappy shoe.

Not the boots the model is wearing, they look like wellies with a heel!
I'd probably wear my patent Doc Martens Mary Janes I think with a dress like that.

This is a really difficult dress to wear with a flat shoe or boot

As a 90's teenager I would absolutely rock a chunky flat boot with this - DM style or similar

Is it a formal party, or just at a friend's gaff? If it's formal, then sleek heels will look best. If it's just at a friend's, then just wear furry slippers 😂😉

I'd say the absolute opposite. Steer very much away from a sleek heel for that dress (you'll rarely see similar styled that way). Pretty sure OP didn't want a high heel anyway.

I would go for block heeled boots so I don't think I'm much help but yes I would go for chunky ankle boots as the next option. What have you got to go over it?

TBF the OP did say "no heels".

She did, however it's a midi length figure hugging dress (one of the reviews has actually described it as a bodycon fit).
If it was a figure hugging mini, then chunky footwear could work (but would still look out of place at a formal new year party, which was why I asked the vibe).
Given length/fit of this dress, chunky or 'slouchy boots' will generally look bottom heavy. The model is tall and thin, and the line still looks very odd against the boots.
Neither the colour (dark brown) nor style of the dress are something I'd consider for a party, not that that matters because the OP likes it (I just think the right shoes will help flatter the dress, and the wrong ones will do the opposite).

I kind of think no heels means no heels. I can't wear heels anymore sadly, even if they did flatter.
