What footwear with this dress

Bought this dress for a New Year’s party.
What footwear would look good with this dress?

Tough one.

Ballet flats are awfuk and in my opinion too casual.

Chunky boots might be too heavy for a delicate dress.

Wedges don’t work with a delicate dress with straps.

You don’t want to wear heels or sandals so my best guess is kitten heels.

It’s so horrible. Wear what you want. Just my opinion. And I’m useless lol…

Ballet trainers or sneakerinas

I would go for some suede or velvet ballet flats. Check out Flabelus for inspiration (although their prices can be high) but there are lot of High St options around at the moment.

Personally, I'd wear it with my gold cowboy boots

Where did I suggest chunky? The dress needs a shoe that balances it. But not necessarily a chunky boot (though, done well, slip + biker boot etc can look great).

The pair you suggest would be fine with a trouser but jar with the OPs dress.

I have them in navy (an eBay find!), & they're comfy & go with lots.

If the party is a smart/formal one, then they would work well (I hadn't realised at first that the dress is a very dark brown, rather than black). But the OP hasn't said, so boots might be more appropriate. I've been to the Edinburgh Hogmanay street parties, & flat parties where we had to climb onto the roof to see the fireworks - so boots would be an advantage in those situations!

I think those who say that chunky boots would overwhelm the dress are missing the point - the contrast is precisely the look that's aimed for. It started out as a perfect example of the "wrong shoes theory" - long before that term was invented! And has now become fairly mainstream.

Plenty of examples of long bodycon or slip dresses being worn with chunky boots. Or more sleek, pointed boots - either fitted or slouchy. They don't need to be high though - could be kitten-heeled or a slanted cowboy heel.

It's not an easy look to pull off, particularly in a budget dress.

I don't entirely agree about it being a difficult look to pull off. I'm a lot older & fatter than when I wore this kind of look a lot. But even though I wouldn't feel comfortable in something so bodycon or bias-cut these days, I would happily wear a looser spaghetti-strap variant with boots & a blazer in autumn. I think it's as much about confidence & knowing how to tweak a look to make it "you", as it is about youth or slimness.

It's quite a casual style, you could wear pumps with it.

This one's wrong shoe, wrong jacket, wrong bag - which is why it works so well!

I love the combos in @RowNine's Vogue link, too. Most of us were here in the nineties & noughties - we already know how to do this (plus, it's not exactly mysterious!)

There's always women on these threads ripping the arse out of it, trying to prove how much of a fashionista they are (linking Vogue to prove it 😂). The dress is awful. It's a 15 quid dress in a dreadful colour, I was actually just politely suggesting ways of making it look less awful!

just because you don’t like it @JasmineMac doesn't mean it’s awful. I really like it. I’m old and not thin and have a similar one which has been great both styled a bit like @EleanorMc67 showed, but with higher ankle boots and sheer leopard socks; and for a party more fancy. As well as with a t shirt under it or big jumper over it

The slip dress and chunky boots look is great if you are Kate Moss c 1996. For the rest of us, not so much.

I've made assumptions about your budget. Obviously there's a ton more options under £80 and, if you stretch to £150, I'd probably say the Air & Grace flats upthread.

I like the dress! With this kind of style, it's less about the dress than the body wearing it. That means you can do almost anything with your feet 😁 but I've tried to make suggestions that say 'party' and - in various ways - 'sophisticated'.

It would be fine if people weren't so precious about proving how superior and correct they are; their finger firmly on the style pulse. It's not so much miserable as it is pathetic.

The recommendation for a pair of bog-standard shiny black stilettoes had its finger way off the style pulse - and off OP's specific request 'no high heels'.
