Has anyone used AI to help choose outfits and personal style?

I did this for the first time today and uploaded some photos of myself in different outfits. The responses were surprisingly insightful - and the outfits it picked as my ‘strongest’ are actually the ones I feel best in.

How have you used AI to help with style?

I have quite a strong sense of personal style and I've just asked chat gpt to determine my season and kibbe, then nudged it to my preferred aesthetic (grown up goth). What it spat out was almost identical to what I already wear which was quite uncanny but it did make me feel like I might be doing something right intuitively!

Funnily enough I used it to try and work out my colours today. It varied depending on the photo from soft Autumn to cool Summer.

No. This is just plain wrong. Just making text queries and 'chatting' is still going to have more impact than scrolling on forums and static web pages (especially for people who use ad-blockers), particularly in regards to data centre impacts.

I suggest you read up on the issues, as you don't seem very well-informed on the massive energy suck of AI, how much worse it's going to get as AI gets more advanced and more widely used, and the effects of the far more resource intense data centres.

I don't need to read up on this 😂

You're right about ad blockers as that would mean fewer third party requests, but the ad auction itself often happens before the blocker can intervene, so the bidding processes are still running regardless of whether the ad is displayed. So there's often still significant usage I'm afraid. Moving around MN for the same period of time as chatting to an LLM could easily result in higher HTTP requests. LLM inference is more optimised in terms of batching and quantisation than a site like MN.

It's really not as simple to say that using AI for the same time as browsing MN would inherently be worse. It depends upon multiple factors and how the platforms are being used.

Someone should ask AI which is worse 😝

I find it odd how some people have absolutely no idea what colours suit them. Surely it’s trial and error. Have you ever worn something and thought the colour is flattering? You have to use something that sucks resources in this way for something so trivial

Edited

I didn’t really understand what colours suited me until I had my colours done by the HOC but once I had them done everything just fell into place.

Im now going to try and get AI to explain what being a ‘natural romantic’ involves as I never really understood what my consultant meant.

I have a good idea through trial and error. Navy not black, charcoal, silver grey, teal etc. I also know that I can't wear any sort of yellow or orange, but I have no idea what skin tone I have and the colour of my hair is dramatically different with age. It is hand to look at a palette of colours together.

I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. I know what colours I like and what colours I don't like. I've never looked at a colour on me, or anyone else, and thought "that suits you/that makes you look dead". I look at clothes all the time and think, "that's great" or "good grief, hell no", but it's the item of clothing I'm looking at.

Brown for example doesn't "suit" me because I don't like it as a colour and I wouldn't want to wear it.

noonames · 07/09/2026 06:23

I wonder about that too - what if you get your colours done and the colours that apparently suit you are ones you don’t like?

This is the case with my mum, but she still opts to wear those colours because she knows they suit her. Obviously it’s entirely your choice what colours you wear! It’s annoying when your own colours are not trending at the moment. I am a winter and lots of neutrals and browns really don’t suit me but there are times when that’s pretty much all you can get in the shops I go to.

Chances are that you are cool toned if those are the colours that suit you. Do you prefer silver jewellery too?

DeHumanaeMentisApatheia · 08/09/2026 14:29

Don’t you shop online, @whyschoolwhy? You wouldn’t find any limitation on colours if you did. (You’d just need to explore and find brands / sites that have the sort of thing you want.)

Yes I do. Thanks for that.

Yes, I do. I’m just thinking of times when I need something new in a hurry for example, so I pop into somewhere like Next or H&M, only to find that everything is in the wrong colours for me.

I did use it recently. Looking for new outfit ideas, ChatGPT suggested I buy sage green trousers, a pale blue shirt, a pale pink cardigan, cream trousers, straight leg jeans, a short pale pink jacket, a casual green dress and a patterned pink dress. It was very precise! (Not bought any of those things.)

😂 Did you ask it "What clothes would make me look like a Neapolitan ice cream"?

Re. your last point, eBay has now moved on to AI images of people wearing the item. Usually used as the 1st picture you see for a listing. So annoying as a) It usually doesn't look like the actual garment and b) It's all soft focus, bland, uncanny valley Step ford Wives (IMO)

I have only just noticed this of late on eBay & Etsy, & it's freaky!!!

I was looking at a little vintage cardigan & they had used AI to have a "model" wear it - it's so ridiculously unrealistic!! The sleeves aren't even the same length, & it's about five sizes larger!!!
