Has anyone used AI to help choose outfits and personal style?

I did this for the first time today and uploaded some photos of myself in different outfits. The responses were surprisingly insightful - and the outfits it picked as my ‘strongest’ are actually the ones I feel best in.

How have you used AI to help with style?

Yes I did and it’s been really helpful. I lost 10stone thanks to a diabetes diagnoses and the wonders of Mounjaro. I was obese at 11yr old so have never been a slim adult and had no idea where to start. I took some full length photos in leggings and a vest and asked it to tell me my body shape, the shapes and styles of clothes that would highlight my strengths, the colours of make up, clothing and jewellery that would best complement my hair and skin tone. From that I was able to go into a big department store and just start trying stuff on. I took photos of each outfit and uploaded those then got the breakdown on which worked best.

I’ve used that information to build a smaller but better wardrobe of stuff that suits me and I feel good in.

I’ve not asked for help with styling but I’m researching some of my vintage clothes to try and date them etc and it’s been very helpful for that. I’m mindful that it’s not always accurate though. I’ve also realised it’s only as good as the information I feed it and that, if I’m not really precise in my wording, it can take me down a false trail. But it’s been a useful tool and it’s always telling me how clever and insightful I am which is nice Grin

(I wish people would stop using it to describe clothes they’re selling on Vinted and EBay though. You can always tell and it puts me right off.)

Re. your last point, eBay has now moved on to AI images of people wearing the item. Usually used as the 1st picture you see for a listing. So annoying as a) It usually doesn't look like the actual garment and b) It's all soft focus, bland, uncanny valley Step ford Wives (IMO)

Hearditall01 · 05/09/2026 08:45

I did use it recently. Looking for new outfit ideas, ChatGPT suggested I buy sage green trousers, a pale blue shirt, a pale pink cardigan, cream trousers, straight leg jeans, a short pale pink jacket, a casual green dress and a patterned pink dress. It was very precise! (Not bought any of those things.)

I’m fascinated by this. Where do you start? Just upload some photos of yourself and ask it to dress you? Do you tell it what kind of thing/shops you like?

I don't upload photos, I gave my height and colours i like budget and occasion. I just use Gemini.

I also add my age group, because I don't want uber fashionable younger woman's style.

Did you think about the environmental impact of using generative AI to sort an outfit for you? I despair

Me too. Fuck me.

Not enough to look in a mirror anymore, we have people literally scorching the earth to stoke their fragile egos.

MsCrawford · 05/09/2026 08:52

Yes I’ve used it to see what colour pallet I was, after loosing weight I felt a bit lost with shape and style, so I know some colours that really suit me- and if I find a dress I liked for example- I’d upload a photo of it, and ask ai about shoes and accessories- so creating a look. I’ve found it really useful.

GelatinousDynamo · 05/09/2026 08:52

I've used it to research ingredients in cosmetics without having to work myself through lists and having to google anything I didn't know only to discover that it's just another form of silicone. But I've never tried it for clothes.

But do you really feel comfortable uploading your pictures into a LLM?

Running an AI chat query uses significantly less energy and consumes less resources than watching a TikToc video.

Is that what AI tells you?

This article and others like it actually. I implemented and manage our ISO14001 environmental sustainability management system at work for a global organisation and have calculated our Greenhouse Gas Emissions and developed our Carbon Footprint plan so am not unfamiliar with the concerns about AI use large scale. You’re being ridiculous if you think that someone asking a few questions a day to ChatGPT instead of standard google in non-AI mode is going to have any kind of statistically significant impact.

What's the carbon footprint of using ChatGPT?

Very small compared to most of the other stuff you do.

Yes that too. It's all spookily bland and then they don't even bother to tell you the garment measurements Angry

OneTake · 05/09/2026 10:05

Used it for colour things for clothes and make up. Have seen outfit creating AI but it didn't blow my mind.

No I haven't ever used it. AI is an environmental and social nightmare. You don't need it.

Buying, not wearing and disposing of clothes that don't suit is also an environmental nightmare and wrong on a number of levels (and yeah, yeah, they can always be given to a charity shop)

miffmufferedmoof · 05/09/2026 12:27

I’ve recently tried using chat gpt for this and was a bit disappointed with it. It mainly reflected back what I’d told it, agreed with everything I said I like, and made mistakes. It improved a bit when I challenged it, but now I’m not sure I trust its advice. I’ve found it good for skincare advice though

Outfits & coordinating perfumes ...?!! Does anyone actually choose a different perfume depending on what they're wearing?

Sometimes I'll wear a different scent in summer, if it's hot - but otherwise I wear the same perfume all year round, as it's "me"!! I would feel quite disturbed if I kept changing my scent - it would unsettle me ...

Yes. I do. I wouldn’t wear a deep, sexy scent if I’m wearing jeans and a sweater to the pub. That’s for when I’m really dressed up.

What Ai is great for is suggesting different outfits from the a selection of clothes. I have a bunch of stuff I’ve started wearing again, it’s definitely given some clothes a new lease of life. It will also often tell me not to buy something if it doesn’t think it matches my style, won’t get enough wear out of it or if it’s similar to something I already have.

I have definitely bought fewer clothes which is in itself a positive environmental impact.

Yeah, that was odd 😂. I can only assume that after a lengthy perfume chat earlier in the day when discussing the advent calendar it felt compelled to try and fit in some suggestions.

I did tell it I would be in packed cinemas all day so noticeable fragrance was not really appropriate, and it commended me on my perfume etiquette and consideration for others 🤣

OneOpalOwl · 05/09/2026 15:13

My friend uses ChatGPT a lot when trying on clothes, like she’ll take a pic in the changing room and upload it. She says she uses prompts that makes ChatGPT is neutral rather than its usual agree with anything you say.

I have used it for outfit inspo and it is useful but no more so than Pinterest or instagram tbh.

whyschoolwhy · 05/09/2026 15:24

There are a lot of luddites on MN today.

SocksAndTheCity · 05/09/2026 01:50

Well mine suggests outfits based on clothes I already own, the vast majority of which were bought second hand in vintage/charity shops and on eBay and the like. It's good at identifying things I can't place myself.

I'm struggling to see what the environmental impact is there, but I'm mostly eternally grateful that it's Pious Sanctimony setting was put safely into deep sleep mode a long way down the line.

I think its about the amount of power and water used by AI.

Possibly, but my kitchen uses plenty of both too and I don't see any frothing about how I should just be eating raw vegetables. Obviously those having a pop don't drive or have children (neither of which I do), use imported products/eat imported food or take overseas flights Because Environment.

Either way, when you're whining about it on an S&B thread surrounded by people who've just bought 23 advent calendars, it's time to have a word with yourself 😂

JaneJeffer · 05/09/2026 20:12

Big difference between using your kitchen to cook food to ensure your survival and pissing water down the drain to tell you what jumper you should be wearing @SocksAndTheCity

SocksAndTheCity · 05/09/2026 20:23

@JaneJeffer I don't NEED to cook food to survive (and I know a handful of people who never cook anything and live off convenience stuff). It would be inconvenient and expensive not to, but if we're setting the bar at survival it's no more necessary than googling things, which is the only AI I've ever used.

As for asking it what jumper to wear, I think you've confused me with another poster? I asked it to make me an LFF schedule and it (apropos of nothing) suggested outfits for the different events, possibly because I'd asked about some clothes and suchlike earlier.

I have never asked anyone (human or computer) what I should wear, not in the entire fifty three years I've been alive. I suspect I never will.

Then I don’t get why you’re accusing someone of whining when they just said they are worried about how much water and power AI uses Confused
