Has anyone used AI to help choose outfits and personal style?

MakemineaGandT · 04/09/2026 23:31

I did this for the first time today and uploaded some photos of myself in different outfits. The responses were surprisingly insightful - and the outfits it picked as my ‘strongest’ are actually the ones I feel best in.

How have you used AI to help with style?

This article and others like it actually. I implemented and manage our ISO14001 environmental sustainability management system at work for a global organisation and have calculated our Greenhouse Gas Emissions and developed our Carbon Footprint plan so am not unfamiliar with the concerns about AI use large scale. You’re being ridiculous if you think that someone asking a few questions a day to ChatGPT instead of standard google in non-AI mode is going to have any kind of statistically significant impact.

You might be the “sustainability person” that thought lockdown was “amazing” for our carbon footprint because fewer staff were travelling to work.

Until I asked how she was balancing that the office was still being lit for 30 people when only 5 were there, and the other 25 people were all using power in their homes…….

And it’s making people stupider by the day.

What Ai is great for is suggesting different outfits from the a selection of clothes. I have a bunch of stuff I’ve started wearing again, it’s definitely given some clothes a new lease of life. It will also often tell me not to buy something if it doesn’t think it matches my style, won’t get enough wear out of it or if it’s similar to something I already have.

I have definitely bought fewer clothes which is in itself a positive environmental impact.

There are people that can do that too. I used one. She was fantastic.

Presumably she’ll just starve at some point as AI takes over.

dunroamingfornow · 05/09/2026 20:57

All the time. It’s really useful. I just asked it what colour shoes for a particular outfit and it links to shops etc . I use it far too much !

FancyKitten · 05/09/2026 20:57

My sister asked ChatGTP to design a skincare routine for her. It listed the recommended products, the best prices, where to buy them. Ingredients, reviews, everything. She went & bought it all. She’s happy! But, it’s not for me.

Chatgtp · 05/09/2026 20:57

Yes. Bucket loads of peopke have asked moi.
I have a Farrow and Ball colour chart, and access to a myriad of Paper Dolls to explore different outfits.
Give me a go. You will be surprised at the results - I know I am at times.

Running an AI chat query uses significantly less energy and consumes less resources than watching a TikToc video.

Watching TikTok videos is also not essential. Lots of us manage to exist quite happily without it.

I’ve never seen TikTok, Snapchat or used AI

Waitingfordoggo · 05/09/2026 21:13

Same @FancyKitten. Or Instagram.

InfoSecInTheCity · 05/09/2026 21:30

You get that TikToc was an example of watching a short streaming video right? If you watch videos on YouTube, or bbc news or my other website it’s using more energy than an individual asking chatGPT (or any other generative AI tool) a question.

Or I might not!

Very little of any of that @InfoSecInTheCity.

Yet here you are posting on MN, where there's images, adverts, analytics, tracking requests etc etc.

People posting online about the environmental impact of AI make me laugh.

Waitingfordoggo · 05/09/2026 23:43

Chuckle away @Oliveoy. It’s not all or nothing, is it? It’s about trying not to do anything to excess. At least that’s how I manage my environmental impact psychologically. I know I’m doing better than some people and not as well as others.

Yes, I could come off Mumsnet but it’s sort of part of my social life 😂 It’s not a need, only a want, which is something I think about a lot when I’m buying or consuming things. I’m happy that my impact is mostly on a ‘need’ basis but accept that my use of MN is not in that category.

PhaedraTwo · 06/09/2026 00:13

As a test I asked Chat GPT to suggest what a 67 year old size 14, 5'3" woman with £1, 000 to spend should buy. The results were hilariously bad.

Then why single out light LLM use? It's just virtue signalling. It's no worse than scrolling youtube or streaming netflix, and nobody ever criticises that.

MakemineaGandT · 06/09/2026 00:46

Interesting comments and experiences, thanks everyone. I think I’ll use it occasionally but I do have a pretty strong idea of what I think suits me anyway, which AI just reinforced (I hear it does that! 😂).

As for the environmental impact comments - no, I don’t think the occasional question to Chat GPT is anything to feel guilty about. I think if we want to address climate change we need to do far more than donning hair shirts and criticising each other.

In her article, she comes to the conclusion that "personal use of ChatGPT is not that bad for the environment" (compared to other things we do).

Not that bad. Compared to what? Flying in a private jet? Eating meat? Buying new clothes? Boiling the kettle?

Maybe it's not as bad as any of those, in terms of overconsumption of resources & environmental damage. They're all on a sliding scale though. Just because boiling a kettle several times a day may use more energy than an AI search, that doesn't mean that I should just cut back on hot drinks. I'm not keen on thoughtless use of AI either. It's all cumulative.

I'm not preaching against its use - it has its applications & I'm sure lots of people find it really useful. But I had a side role in my last company as sustainability advisor, as it's something I'm passionate about, & I try to consider as much as possible in my day-to-day life.

I think that people who use it for wardrobe advice etc are often feeling under-confident. The examples that people have posted on other threads show outfits that are well-enough put together - but there's nothing unexpected about them!! They're a bit dull & uncreative & beige, & I would feel stifled at the thought of being told what to wear by anyone - let alone AI!!

So I think my own objection to using it too much, is that it would obliterate so much of the fun I have playing around with clothes!!!

There's a lot of whataboutery on this thread.

Justifying the environmental impact of frequent use of ChatGPT by saying "What about your use of Instagram & Facebook?", does not prove that using ChatGPT to choose outfits is a good choice. It's just deflection, by pointing out another problem. Both are non-essential uses of energy (& time! So much time ...!!! That's a wail of despair to myself, btw!).

I'm trying to cut down on lots of things - we cancelled Netflix & Amazon some time ago - so some people are concerned about all this ever-expanding STUFF*!!

(*That also includes the piles of clothes in my bedroom that I'm currently listing on Vinted 😁!)

I hope my comments don't read that way. I've actually found this a really interesting read, & it's made me think about ChatGPT a bit more deeply.

My own personal aversion is more to do with creativity of expression & the joy of the unexpected, not conformity & conventionality (which seems to be the general outcome with ChatGPT).

However, I remember decades ago, when I got my first mobile phone & was agreeing the most suitable package with the advisor, haughtily telling him that I'd only be using it for phone calls & would hardly ever use texts!! And of course, as soon as I got a Smart Phone I became a slave ...

So this time next year, maybe my life (& my knicker drawer!) will have been transformed by ChatGPT!!

tobee · 06/09/2026 03:50

AI has definitely lots of downsides which are much discussed and there are definitely concerning aspects. However, there are some brilliant things it can do for example tailoring cancer treatments to individuals. Obviously people will say that that looking to AI to choose your clothing is frivolous in comparison but I can also understand the appeal for using it for fun. It’s up to humans to work out the best ways to ameliorate the way AI and other things use up resources. It’s not going to go away globally. Just like nuclear weapons can’t be un invented etc.
