Thanks for the new thread @JoRaRaRa. Im very excited about the Selfridges FAC but I’m still resisting other BACs. We moved house on Friday and Im in shock abkut the amount of stuff ive got everywhere and my beauty and fragrance stashes. 😆

My SpaceNK sale order arrived this morning, so I've crammed a few more things into last years Liberty box for my frankenstein calendar 😅

Having never done a frankenstein before, a question for those who have - did you plan or curate it in any way? I think I've kind of given up on any sense of order, and just worked around what I have that I want to treat myself with later in the year, and what fits in what boxes. My memory isn't great, so I'll have forgotten most of what's in there by Dec - I think I'll be confused, amused, and hopefully pleased with what I find 😂

what the heck is a Frankenstein calendar?

I’m new to this/these thread(s) this year. Been a while since I’ve bought an advent calendar but I’m going to this year. Any tips on which ones look the best?

A Frankenstein calendar is when you refill an old calendar box yourself - I used my old Fortnums calendar and did it two years in a row when I couldn't afford or didn't want an new one.

I put unopened stuff from my stash in that I'd forgotten about, replacements for my workhorse products plus some new bits, and still had space for some Reece's peanut butter cups and a book 😀

I asked the Google AI this morning about the Space NK leak and it said it was fake, although I don't know how reliable that is. The reveal is this Wednesday (19th) at 7am

It’s hard to say atm @ABoldStatement as so few have done full reveals. It also depends on your budget and interests.

There was general agreement on here last year that GlossyBox was very good value, with wide appeal - ditto the Boots skincare a/c.

If you give a general idea of your budget and interests, people will have lots more suggestions.

@Mejera - my refilled DIY Liberty calendar is a carefully curated hodgepodge of stuff I have acquired this year! It has socks, silly Xmas earrings, together with stuff from edits, freebies, etc. I also popped in a couple of things I use all the time.

Put it this way: It wouldn’t make any influencers’ best a/c lists 😹

It's where someone buys one or more calendars, sells off the bits they don't want and buys stuff on Vinted from other calendars that they do want to replace it. I'm going to take credit for coining it last year (although honestly it was meant as a criticism as I prefer to open them in their natural state as a countdown to Christmas... But some posters have reclaimed it as a positive so fair enough).

I actually think the fun of BACs has worn off for me now and I can see the appeal of buying them basically as good value beauty boxes.

@owlpassport 🤣 I told my husband that you'd called my advent calendar a Frankenstein and then he decided that would be the name for it, so you can blame him for turning it into a positive. He thought it was rather funny.

I almost can’t believe it is still August and you guys are on thread 4 of BAC chat! That is some going.

I have been semi avoiding the chat as am a bit advent calendar fatigued. And I have way too much stuff still in my stash. But FOMO will likely ensue so I may end up with one.

I had the Boots skincare one last year and liked a lot of it. Had enough Advantage points to get it free but I don’t this year.

Anyway…. read the thread just now and am intrigued by the idea of using AI to curate a routine using what I have. Can I ask those of you who have done this how did you do it? Did you type up a list or take photos? Did you ask any particular questions?

I really need to use up what I have. And I counted yesterday and I have ten full size serums plus a few minis. Hardly any moisturiser. A couple of cleansers. Too many acid toners/treatments. I’m hit and miss with using retinol. Definitely need a proper routine.

The case does look like it might be good but why put a bloody chiffon scarf over it in the photo? Just show us the case. This whole 'we'll let you see it but not properly' thing winds me up.

@Peridot1 I think how useful it is depends on how often you use the AI tool for this sort of thing. I talk to AI about skincare, different products and have along the way told it about various preferences, my skin type and so on, so the recommendations I get back from it are for example,
'Because you have oily/combination skin and dislike a tacky finish when doing your morning skincare and make up routine, I'd recommend x or y product... and then because you enjoy a more luxurious routine in the evening, I'd recommend this particular more high end product for that...'
I've chosen a quirky/irreverent communication style so 'my' AI talks to me about skincare, cats and how to stop little paws from knocking bottles of serum onto the floor.
I'm a little worried to ask it to recommend 1-3 BACs to me because it enables the shit out of me when it comes to this. My friends and family are not into this stuff at all and would take a minute to consider what a beauty advent calendar would even be.

Ooh the Boots skincare is right up my street!

Re: AI - my recent experiences are very mixed:

For a beauty routine, I asked Gemini to suggest a routine for me (and told it what I already had in my stash), then asked ChatGPT to critique it. ChatGPT pointed out a few errors, but on the whole was quite good advice which I have started following.

Style/hair: I uploaded some photos and asked it for ideas to elevate my look. It came up with some decent hair ideas (more honey-blonde, wide swept fringe) but then generated a photo of someone with black hair and corkscrew curls (think Leo Sayer!)

When I asked it to do a seasonal colour analysis, it told me I was 2 different types of Spring, soft Summer and Autumn in the same chat.

A holiday advice chat ended with it telling me that I had enough information now and should just book something and chill out!

The most common line seems to be: ‘you are quite right to challenge me on this ….’

edited to say: it did tell me that I should buy the Elle advent calendar and produced a decent analysis of the ones I am considering, allocating percentage points based on 5 different categories - type of product/value etc

Thanks @DidILeaveTheGasOn and @IDontKnowWhatYouMean. I use ChatGPT quite a bit for house decor and garden stuff already. I use the paid version. It “knows” quite a bit about me in some areas. Not delved into more personal stuff yet. Will give it a go.

Am aware of errors - when using it to help plan a trip it recommended a restaurant that closed in 2017!

Google AI has helped me with tips for morning and evening skincare routines and also worked in the products from the calendar, plus some stuff I've had kicking about in my stash for ages. I've found it really helpful to chat to about the minutiae because it never gets bored and tells me to give it a rest

It's also going to let me know as soon as the Space NK contents are public, and compare them against the Selfridges one according to what I've told it which I'm looking forward to, even if I ignore it in the end.

I copied and pasted the products from the advent calendars I’ve ordered just into google AI and asked what products were good for treating melasma, which ones I should avoid and asked it to create a morning and evening routine. I asked which items would be good to give to my daughter. I told it how old I am. Sometimes it asked follow up questions and suggested what I might like to ask next.

Well that was a useful way to spend the afternoon! Apparently I don’t have a stash of lovely skincare problem I just have a shortage of face! 😂

It was very useful. I now have an AM and PM routine which has reduced duplications of ingredients and I have a use up queue to switch in as I use products up. Plus a list of things I should not use on my face due to sensitivity and rosacea.

But apparently I definitely don’t need a BAC…..

I get really irritated with Boots in that you can’t use your points for part payment but need enough to cover the entire purchase - including postage!

I asked AI about the Rodial Bee Venom super serum in Selfridges advent calendar (I didn’t give it product name, just pasted the ingredient list asked to rate it for my skin) and it was very sceptical of it, told me to save my money. It also crated me a simple but effective routine with BHA, Retinol, vitamin C and sunscreen 😊 I was using all the random skincare from various edits and my skin was not feeling great, until AI intervention 😁 it told me less is more.

I’ve also been on a mission to convert my DH to Korean skincare, so that we could buy K-beauty/Boots calendar jointly for shared use 👹 😁
