How do you decide when it is time for a haircut?

AI keeps telling me I don't need a haircut (am growing it) but I've always had a mindset that I should go every 12 weeks or so. I'm over that now and tbf it does seem ok.

I know it depends on length and style and condition and hair type but interested in what makes you know to go.

I just book every 8 weeks but that’s because I have highlights and get it cut at the same time

magicpractice · 25/07/2026 12:41

I only go about every 9-12 months so just go off time really

willowstar · 25/07/2026 12:57

I get my hair cut approximately every 4-6 months. I usually think to book when it is getting a bit difficult to brush towards the ends and a bit straggly. I have long hair.

Epoisses · 25/07/2026 13:05

I book every 5 weeks. All my appointments in the diary till January 2027

shellyleppard · 25/07/2026 13:05

When my fringe is blocking my view 😁😁

MildlyAnnoyed · 25/07/2026 13:12

I have a colour every 8 weeks & I just ask her to cut as little as she can get away with. I’m happy just to have the ‘dust’ off because I’m trying to grow it.

MidnightMeltdown · 25/07/2026 13:31

Mine starts to look shit when the layers grow out too much. Usually after around 3 months.

Daffodilsinthespring · 25/07/2026 13:41

Every 6 Thursday here. Shortish hair. I can you about go 7 weeks without it looking a mess.

AmazedinSpaces · 25/07/2026 13:42

I try to delay as long as possible towards a year. This time I made it 10 months. Then I have about a foot chopped off and start again. Last year my daughter said the shorn hair swept into the corner looked like a dead dog. I value affordability over stylishness. A set of straighteners can make a neglected horror show look fine in my opinion.

marplemead · 25/07/2026 13:46

I always ask for a haircut that will grow out nicely. I used to get my hair cut fairly regularly, but tighter finances mean that it's now 4-6 months. I can usually tell when it needs a cut because it takes longer to style.

KrazyKatty · 25/07/2026 13:49

Every 6 weeks as it’s very short and grows out quickly.

3teens2cats · 25/07/2026 15:13

I go every 4 months for a cut and colour and book the next appointment while I'm there each time. This way I don't have to remember or think about it. I used to book it as and when but this way I never get to the point where I hate how much it's grown out. Before I started colouring it I would know it was time when I found myself putting it up all the time.

FoxandDuck · 25/07/2026 15:16

When I have it cut, it sits just above my shoulders and I wear it down quite a lot. When I realise I am wearing it up all of the time, that is usually my sign to get it cut. This can be anything from 4 - 11 months. In the meantime, I will have had it coloured and, separately, keratined and had my fringe trimmed at the same time.

hattie43 · 25/07/2026 15:17

Every 8 weeks and it’s hard to style .

Boutonnière · 25/07/2026 15:19

About 12 weeks - as soon as I look in the mirror and think ‘ my hair looks just how I like it ! ‘ I know it will flop within 2 or 3 days and it’s time for a cut.

When I had a fringe I used to cut it myself, do you think you could do that ? I know some hairdressers do a free fringe cut though.

DanceMumTaxi · 25/07/2026 15:23

I have mine booked in for every 8 weeks. Currently got my appointments booked into the new year because I need a Saturday.

Clearinguptheclutter · 25/07/2026 15:25

8ish weeks but I have a layered bob sort of style to it looks a bit scruffy- and the fringe too long- after about 7

however if you have longer hair every 3-4 months is probably good. Some will cut it less often and that’s fine too.

My sons need it going every 6 or so weeks (short hair)

shellyleppard · 25/07/2026 15:28

@SqueakyFromme I usually do lol.....i get annoyed by the fringe so chop chop

HelenaWilson · 25/07/2026 15:28

When I get fed up with it. When it takes longer to dry and looks a mess on windy days. Around every 3-4 months. I might get it done before I go on holiday if it's getting near the time I might want to have it cut.I

I trim my fringe myself in between cuts.

ThirdStorm · 25/07/2026 15:32

I trim my ends every 5-6 weeks and box dye every 6-8 weeks. All DIY here!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 25/07/2026 18:34

When I have to spend time zchuzzing it every morning. Or tying it up. Like now.

This is so true!! My hair always looks great when I arrive at the hairdresser. So much so that once I left without having it cut at all, just waved.

I used to get free fringe trims (when I had a fringe!). Used to give the feeling of a whole new cut.

I think my problem is that I don't have a 'usual' style. It's always changing so hard to compare with anything and seems to look ok at all sorts of lengths.
