How do you decide when it is time for a haircut?

AI keeps telling me I don't need a haircut (am growing it) but I've always had a mindset that I should go every 12 weeks or so. I'm over that now and tbf it does seem ok.

I know it depends on length and style and condition and hair type but interested in what makes you know to go.

My hair recently needed highlights and a trim. I’d started a new job. My staff pass has my old hairstyle and I definitely needed a cut!

If you're trying to grow your hair out, you shouldn't cut your hair every 12 weeks - that's counter-productive and unnecessary. I have extremely long hair (hip length), and I only cut my hair twice a year. My rule is:

Haircut (I cut it myself, or get a friend to do it) on the first summer day (1 June) and first winter day (1 December). Then I trim the ends on the first spring day (1 March) and the first autumn day (1 September). That's it.

In the meantime, I always take good care of my ends so they don't split.

Every now and again I look in the mirror and go “oh shit, is that what I look like?” Then I book a haircut.

I've always cut my own fringe. I'm not even that careful TBH 😁 Just lob it off when it's dripping wet from a wash.
Never go too short though, so I can tidy as needed.

Always growing my hair and finally got it further than bra strap length.
If I had glorious Asian hair (eg) I would never cut it.
My fine blonde hair needs the dry ends removing about twice a year.

I have a grade 2/3 all over. I get the husband to cut it when a client can get their fingers in it 🤣🤣

It's a pixi at the moment so whenever it becomes an effort or needs anything more than a wash and condition.

When it's around shoulder length, it needs cutting when it becomes triangular.

When it's longer, it gets particularly rebellious and/or frizzy when it needs cutting. My fringe would get in my eyes and/or just go kind of flat.

It also, and this is just weird... it gets staticy!

I'm planning to start growing it out in November. So cuts will happen only when it gets particularly mental (growing out a pixi can be painful and you just have to accept that).

I find that happens when it gets to collar length or longer and comes into contact with the man made fabrics you're wearing.

I’m growing mine out, I get it done every other month. I get terrible split ends and get my hair bleached so leaving it too long means it just looks awful. It’s very slow progress though 😫

That would make sense but it's mainly my fringe. It's horrible! Collars do a number of my nape hair though.

I think it really depends on the condition of your hair (and if you bleach it) mine just breaks off, I need a regular trim (it’s very minimal).

We have a mobile hairdresser now and my daughter and sister have her booked every 4 weeks , I get mine trimmed if it’s been annoying me in the days before she is due so sometimes it’s 8 weeks and sometimes it’s 8 months .

When I can't turn over in bed without leaning on it. It's very thick and probably too long but I'm lazy about it. 🦥

Surely no one bleaches their entire head or hair every 8-12 weeks? But yes, part of looking after hair includes not bleaching it or frying it with hair tools.

Anyway, I should probably have mentioned that I'm a dark hair brunette so obviously don't bleach my hair.

I’m also a dark hair brunette, thus the bleaching 🤣 I get a full head of foils done every other month. The roots need doing.

Also guilty of frying with straighteners 😫 I would consider going back to brunette but starting to get grey hairs now 🙄

You mean your natural hair is dark brunette but you choose to lighten it, or that you bleach it to be a dark brunette because your natural hair is even darker? 😄

Me too, but thankfully mine are strands dotted around so you can barely see them, especially when I have my hair up (which is 95% of the time). I'm thinking about starting my grey blending process in a couple or few years.

I didn't say that - I said you could have it cut to remove the straggly ends but it isn't actually necessary.
In fact I pointed also out that Worzel Gummidge got a TV series and look at his hair...
