How do you decide when it is time for a haircut?

AI keeps telling me I don't need a haircut (am growing it) but I've always had a mindset that I should go every 12 weeks or so. I'm over that now and tbf it does seem ok.

I know it depends on length and style and condition and hair type but interested in what makes you know to go.

When it gets too long to twist up and clip off my neck.
Just started thinking about booking something now. Last cut Feb. Will probably wait til after my holiday tho, then get all the sun damaged bits lopped off.

It entirely depends on your length, style and condition. If you have a short style then every eight weeks might mean it’s looking scruffy by the time you have it cut. If your hair is long then you might get away with every four months Processing hair makes a big difference to condition, particularly as we get older. If you have something like highlights or balayage it’s very difficult not to have some processing overlaps which means you’re more likely to have breakage. It’s really really important to cut split ends as soon as they appear since theytravel up the hair shaft.

I go annually and get a trim.

I'm growing mine so will have a trim every 6-9months to tidy it up.

I do highlights once a year, and cuts about twice a year, just when it starts to cover my neck again, I get it cut.

When I feel it really needs it. Usually once a year is fine. I have long hair so usually get it cut to the bottom of my bra band once a year. It was last done Feb and although still very straight I feel it could prob be doing with a cut in a few months to get rid of the split ends.

If trying to grow it I wouldn’t go for 9 months+ of your hair is still in good condition.

Isn’t everyone growing their hair?

I book my next appointment while I’m at the hairdresser’s, in 5 or 6 weeks’ time. From experience, I know that this is the point at which my hair will decide to start sticking out in strange places.

After the recent Bob trend, we all want long flowing locks again.

Well I do anyway. Everytime I'm growing out chin length hair, I say I'll never cut it short again and then boom! I need a dramatic change then spend years growing it out again.

I haven’t coloured my hair for a while and I’m not using hot hair tools in the hot weather either so that must be helping.

Yes - people keep saying to me ‘your hair is getting long’ (note, no indication of whether they like it or think it suits me), and I don’t have much response other than ‘yes that’s what happens if you don’t touch it 🤷‍♀️’.

I go when the ends start to look and feel horrible.

Every 6 months or so when I think it’s getting too long and shapeless.
My hair is longish and not in a style as such so it doesn’t matter if it goes more time without a cut but I like it better with more shape to it even though it’s longer and it starts to annoy me when it gets too long (for me)

I have highlights and extensions and every ten weeks I have my t section and toner done and my extensions pushed up. Then 10 weeks after that I’ll have all of the extensions taken out, full head of highlights, a trim and extensions put back in. So I have a trim every 20 weeks.

If I didn’t get my hair coloured I probably wouldn’t bother getting it cut at all.

I’d like to go every 4 months, but it has got more expensive so I now go every 6 months. A few weeks before Christmas and just before the school summer holidays.

That is irritating! I think I would be saying is there an and to that sentence - long for what?

I haven't been to the hairdressers for years! It just got to the point where it was costing a lot and I thought I'd try to do it myself. My hair is long, a couple of inches below my bra strap, and my daughter now cuts it straight across every few months. I trim my fringe and put in a few layers around the front. It's saved a lot of money and honestly looks the same as it did when I went to the hairdressers (although it would probably be different if I had a shorter style).

OP if you are happy with your hair, I think it's fine to wait to go back to the hairdressers until you feel you need to, even if it's a longer time than you're used to!

Usually 2 or 3 times a year when I am on holiday in Spain it’s cheaper there and I can walk there.

I re-book after each appointment, 10-12 weeks, I can only go on one day a week and have to work around my and my stylist’s availability. Mine is shoulder length with long layers, it starts getting flat on top and shapeless from about 10 weeks. Usually just a wet cut (it’s wavy/curly and dries well naturally). I don’t get it coloured, it is dark with a few isolated greys, mainly underneath and at the parting but I use a colour shampoo to tone those in, I don’t want to get into “proper” colouring.

I cut my fringe and my husband trims the ends with the sewing scissors. I always wear it up as its fine and flyaway. It takes less than 5 minutes to cut my hair and costs 35 quid. No thanks. Save the money fir great highlights.

I go every six weeks for a trim, and get my highlights done every three months.

Whenever it bugs me 🤣 usually every 6 to 9 months. I just get it in my head and that it I need it cut. My son I get done every month as it drives me bonkers when it’s not tidy round his ears. The style is up to him but it has to be tidy round his ears.

Sorry to laugh but LOL at your daughter - "looked like a dead dog" - LOL!

I get fed up and chop about six inches off with the dressmaking scissors every five years or so.

My terminal length is just past my shoulders so after that it never changes, just gets rattier.
