Do people still wear hats at weddings?

Do people still wear hats at weddings? I’m attending an in-law’s wedding soon and fancy wearing a hat, but don’t want to look silly. I’m 43. Have my eye on one of those ones with a headband.

I think it is mixed these days. Personally, I have never worn a hat to weddings as I never found any that didn't look ridiculous on me.

Your choice. Wear a hat if you want to, don't if you don't want to.

Up to you

UrbanSoul · 18/07/2026 11:40

Not at the last couple of weddings that I've attended. But neither were fancy weddings.

Lostsadandconfused · 18/07/2026 11:40

They do, but the one you posted is very old fashioned.

TheMarriageOfAirAndFrock · 18/07/2026 11:44

The hat you’ve posted looks (sorry) almost comedically old fashioned, @Jurassicparka.

My feeling is that if someone is a stylish dresser who regularly wears great hats then wearing one to a wedding would be fine.

But a good hat costs a lot of money. Picking up some random headgear on the High St or pre-owned is highly unlikely to enhance one’s outfit.

MrsMitford3 · 18/07/2026 11:47

The last wedding I went to-last month in fact-was completely hatless.

I think unless you are going to a royal wedding or something similar they are sadly considered very dated.

I am sorry to agree with PP's but that hat is awful.

ExOptimist · 18/07/2026 11:48

The weddings I've been to in the last few years have been my children's and I wore a huge hat to both.

Some( mostly older) other guests did wear hats, some young women had a flower in their hair or a fancy clip, most were bareheaded. My children are of an age when they are going to loads of weddings of friends, there seems to be a whole mix of hats, fascinators and bareheaded.

If it's quite a formal wedding wear your hat, if more casual I'd say not.

Dp has some younger friends so I have been to a few post Covid, and I would say that hats and fascinators were worn exclusively by much older members of the bridal party, eg grandmother of the bride, occasionally mother of the bride. So they did look aging in that context.

bellventrico · 18/07/2026 11:50

DD had a quite fancy wedding - only MOB, MOG and GMOG wore hats but wear one if you want

Jurassicparka · 18/07/2026 11:54

I was on the fence and it was a slightly spur of the moment thought. Understood - def not that hat! Thank you for your advice!

I wanted to ban hats and fascinators completely from my wedding. They completely block the view of the people behind you. They ruin photos because the person behind you is obscured. I’m glad they’re going out of fashion.

Wonderknicks · 18/07/2026 11:59

I went to a fairly posh wedding recently where they had let it known that they would love to see hats. I would say less than 10% wore them.
At DS's wedding (40 people) 2 of us wore hats, one wore a fascinator.
I think if you are party of the main bride/groom party it's quite normal, and needs to be fabulous! Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/07/2026 12:01

I’ve just checked my wedding photo and I can see 5 hats/fascinators. That was 2018.

TeenLifeMum · 18/07/2026 12:03

All our family weddings everyone wears fascinators. Similar to the hat on a headband in your post so I dummy see it as old fashioned. I think families vary.

i have a confusing wedding coming up that’s a beach wedding but military uniform so partially really smart. Just wear what you feel good in.

BeDenimStork · 18/07/2026 12:08

In the circles I am associated with the 'I will need to buy a hat' is still the first thing mentioned after a wedding is announced. Fascinators are very popular by the younger fratingent. I think it is nice to wear something special.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/07/2026 12:11

Yes definitely. The mother of the bride and groom definitely will. I love dressing up and always wear a hat or fascinators to weddings. The last wedding I went to I wore one of those thick, beaded Alice bands.

thenightsky · 18/07/2026 12:14

I wore the biggest hat I could find when I was mother of the bride last year. There are a few photos of me taken after I'd taken it off and my outfit looks unfinished without it.

FIFIBEBE · 18/07/2026 12:15

Depends on the wedding I think. I love some of Zara Tindell’s. I’m attending a friends wedding next week and won’t wear one but will for a close family member, they need to be very carefully chosen I think.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/07/2026 12:20

I always wear the biggest most extravagant hat I can find. The last one I added Christmas decorations to it 😂 as it wasn’t mad enough

Senparentingonandon · 18/07/2026 12:25

I think there has been a bit of a wedding hat revival the last couple of years. If it’s a church wedding or at a fancy hotel I’d say you are pretty safe.

MammaTo · 18/07/2026 13:07

I love a hat at a wedding and I don’t think it’s old fashioned at all, any excuse to wear one IMO. The past few weddings I’ve been to lots of women have gone for more of a headband rather then a fascinator and they look gorgeous.

Isittimetojumpoff · 18/07/2026 15:46

Yes!!! Bloody love a hat! Thankfully, we have a good amount of family/friends who also love a hat, or still think it's the correct way to dress for a wedding, so it always seems there are plenty of people hatting up!

Isittimetojumpoff · 18/07/2026 15:48

Also, love the hat you've put a photo of on here ☺️

Aethelthryth · 18/07/2026 16:13

If the men are in morning coats, then I would wear a hat. If not, then probably not. Fascinators look twee and ridiculous on anyone over 25
