Do people still wear hats at weddings?

Do people still wear hats at weddings? I’m attending an in-law’s wedding soon and fancy wearing a hat, but don’t want to look silly. I’m 43. Have my eye on one of those ones with a headband.

Where are you? I find in English weddings people don’t but Scotland it’s still much more common, but generally people dress up more I think!

The hat you’ve posted looks (sorry) almost comedically old fashioned, @Jurassicparka.

My feeling is that if someone is a stylish dresser who regularly wears great hats then wearing one to a wedding would be fine.

But a good hat costs a lot of money. Picking up some random headgear on the High St or pre-owned is highly unlikely to enhance one’s outfit.

Utter nonsense. A friend of mine bought her dress, hat, shoes and bag in a charity shop and was the most stylish person at the wedding. She looked fabulous 👌 I always wear hats to weddings and always receive lots of compliments 🤩

Fascinators are much better. There are some wonderful ones out there

Screamingabdabz · 24/07/2026 22:24

I don’t get the hate. That hat/fascinator looks a perfectly fine match with that dress op. Ironic that people are suggesting those godawful padded headbands which I always think look like they've escaped from a Tudor-wife fancy dress costume.

My big issue with most wedding head attire is that they’re mostly lopsided which only really works if you have immaculate bone structure.

As for the ‘ugh grandma/older women’ ageism - how depressing that people still think it’s acceptable to denigrate older women like that.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 24/07/2026 22:49

@Screamingabdabz I am an older woman and I do know what looks good! Why go out of your way to cling on to something people wore in the 90s! I don’t but I see loads who do.

The headbands which are well made are just right if you don’t want a hat. They are neat and decorative.

Fascinators might be the naffest thing ever invented. They are without exception cheap-looking and utterly tasteless. I’m so glad they seem to have died a death.

I wore a hat to DD's wedding but very few others did. Have had a save the date for great nieces wedding next year and DSiL (DGM of the bride) says she is not wearing a hat and neither is the MOB so I won't either. I do think formal hats are probably going out of style a bit, though if this weather continues we might all be needing sunhats!

user1492757084 · 25/07/2026 04:48

If outdoors and sunny, for sure.
If in a church and formal, pretty safe.
If casual, probably not neccessary.

What are the family guests doing?

1stWorldProblems · 25/07/2026 05:32

Always unless specifically told not to by the bridal party but I love hats (& wear them in everyday life too.)

SoInLuv · 25/07/2026 08:45

I went to a big family wedding in June 2026 and not a single woman wore a hat. Only 1 older man.

Jurassicparka · 25/07/2026 09:01

Here is the headband, it’s so light to wear and isn’t a hat, but makes the outfit to me look how I want. I love it.

Love this too! It will really set it off.
(Also it will be cooler than a hat in the heat.)

Middleagedspreadisreal · 25/07/2026 12:30

Both the dress and the gold headband are lovely! Wear them both

Depends on what you want. The fascinator I wore for my eldest son wedding was £96 back in 2016 and by the high end designer Paul Smith.

I would not have bought or worn something cheap, and tacky.

That said I didn't wear one for my second son wedding, as that one was abroad. I had a parasol instead

louderthan · 25/07/2026 12:39

I love hats. I’m going to two weddings in the next ten days and have a different outfit and hat for both.

Rubberduck76 · 25/07/2026 17:22

If you like it OP I'd go for it. Though, I think wearing hats is less expected nowadays. I think some enjoy the occasion and the opportunity to wear a hat which is fine too. Is it a relaxed or formal do? I love a good hat :)

Laura95167 · 25/07/2026 17:29

Go for it!

Lararoft · 25/07/2026 17:36

I’ve been to posh & not posh weddings, never worn hats or fascinators but I have usually worn a hair clip with sparkle or a floral hair clip depending on what the fashion was at that time.

PoddleOn · 26/07/2026 10:11

I love hats and wear one given any suitable opportunity.
if it’s good enough the Princess of Wales, it’s good enough for me.
I have an upcoming wedding in September and will be wearing a hatinator.
I’m 42, old enough not to give a shit what anyone thinks and, as Auntie of the groom, totally in the category of eligible hat wearers.
Wear your hat and have a great time.

user1497787065 · 26/07/2026 10:28

I used to quite like wearing a hat to a weekend but five years ago after being the only guest wearing a hat at a wedding I decided I would never wear one again.

cardboard33 · 26/07/2026 10:38

I was speaking to a friend about this recently as she is going to a relatives wedding soon. It will apparently be a "cool, non traditional" wedding with mostly young, affluent and child free London based friends attending. The bride is unlikely to wear anything resembling a traditional wedding dress, yet they have asked that all of the guests wear a hat. So clearly, hats at weddings are still considered "in" in some groups.

Icecreamandcoffee · 26/07/2026 10:46

Still seems to be a thing amongst the older generation based off my experience. Also at recent weddings I've been to it seems to be mainly limited to just the family members of the bride and groom.

At my wedding (over a decade ago) hats were worn by: my mum, my grandma, my great aunt, my great grandma, one of my aunts, DH's mum, DH's nan and grandma, DH's great nana, DH's great aunts, DH's aunts. A few of the church congregation wore hats (village church wedding where everyone knows one another and a wedding is a huge event). No-one under 55 wore a hat or a fascinator.

HoldMyWine · 26/07/2026 11:16

I went to a wedding yesterday and wore a hatinator. Out of a 120 guests I would say only about a dozen wore hats and it was mainly older ladies. I enjoyed wearing mine and getting dressed up.

Lobelia123 · 26/07/2026 11:19

Yes go for it, you’ll look fabulous
