Where to buy long cotton nighties, Victorian type style

I am not doing well in this heat (who is?!) and have got it into my head that the comfiest thing to wear around the house would be a long, billowing cotton nightie, the sort of thing my long-deceased grandmothers used to wear. They used to get them in places like BHS or M&S but obviously BHS doesn’t exist and the only ones M&S do these days are too close fitting. I am after something which wouldn’t look amiss in Peter Pan. Please tell me that these still exist somewhere but without being on some sort of specialist retro website where I need to spend £££. If that’s the case, I’ll just stick to my beach cover up

Ooh I am somewhat of an expert in this area (love a good waft!).

If you’re lucky you can find proper vintage ones on Vinted, otherwise have a look at Powell Craft or, if you’re feeling rich, If Only If. I have one from there (from Vinted!) and it’s incredible. Very long, floaty and billowy but the cotton is so light it would fit in an a4 envelope.

Actually one of my favourites was off Amazon. Have a look at the Beautelicate store.

Happy wafting!

White Nightie is a good source of what you want, OP. Other places to try are:

If Only If
Lunn Antiques
Cotton Real
Cotton Lane.

Dunnes Stores! Granny nighties galore.

Zara home .

Not old fashioned but have you looked at Oodie sleep tees? I basically live in these things when im at home and I sleep in them too as a hot sleeper. Can be pricey, but if you get them on sale they are worth every penny

Cheap and cheerful? Peacocks. I have a couple and they're great!

Well now I need a long cotton nightie and a candle holder.

Limepickleontoast · 09/07/2026 19:50

I second Powell Craft

JanFebAndOnwards · 09/07/2026 20:26

Can you still get Nightingales stuff anywhere?

OnlyTomSaidThat · 09/07/2026 20:29

There was a shop back in the day I used to get night gowns for my mother from, I think they website only now, Past Times or something like that.

herculepoirotsmoustache · 09/07/2026 20:31

TK Maxx always have these nighties- sizing is a lottery but I don’t mind sizing up (all the better for wafting around the house)

KayFabe · 09/07/2026 20:46

I want a wafty nightie now!
There's a shop on etsy with some that could be suitable.

Not billowy as such but I love Yawn nightdresses. They are beautiful and cool and look like a loose summer dress.

Powell craft- gorgeous!

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 09/07/2026 21:06

Powell Craft do Victorian style ones

I am currently reclining in a Desmond and Dempsey number. Too good as a nightie, I also wore it out for dinner in the last heatwave. And as a beach dress. Ridiculously expensive but you can get them on eBay

ofcolitas · 09/07/2026 21:07

Another vote for Powell Craft here. They last for bloody years too.

Calliopespa · 09/07/2026 21:18

Cologne and Cotton have a large range.
