What are you seeing people wearing out and about?

Petty much as the title! I am not in the UK, but here I seem to be seeing a lot of black summer dresses, a lot of white summer dresses, and a lot of white skirts with black vest tops. It doesn't entirely reflect what I have seen in the shops, so I am interested as to why,and wondering if it is a local micro trend, or more widespread?

Brown corduroy @Mycatmax ? Are you somewhere cooler?

Mycatmax · 06/07/2026 10:01

No! Brighton. Seen it twice in London last week and then down here at the weekend. Possibly the same skirt on all three twenty something women.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/07/2026 10:04

@TheChosenTwo What’s odd about that? Fairly standard for young men. Deck shoes for young women are popular too in case you hadn’t noticed. Beige suede.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/07/2026 10:06

@Amiacoolorwarmcolour That’s a class/culture thing. It’s not what many young women wear. It’s what they wear to the races.

KettleHead87 · 06/07/2026 14:28

I haven’t noticed any trends, but I’m alternative so I tend to notice (and check out) people who dress like me more. I will say that my friends and I have been wearing loose and comfy over anything ‘stylish’ because it’s too bloody hot to care!

ETA I live in a rural area so maybe that’s why!

LunaTheCat · Yesterday 08:11

The most stylish woman I saw last week was in France.. tall, tan sandals, long sleeved loose black linen t shirt, matching shorts, beautifully tanned.. I was envious !

OvernightBloats · Yesterday 08:17

A lot of tight black vests worn with wide leg trousers.

Some very, short shorts showing bum cheeks! 😲

Nangula · Yesterday 08:17

I thought I was looking great this morning so I took a selfie and ChatGPT described my look as ‘classic 2010’.’ Bastard.

I’m wearing a long white cotton voile skirt, a pale blue linen V-neck vest and a little shell pendant that my husband brought me back from California years ago. And tan Saltwaters with a raffia bag.

In our little town, the summer dresses have been out in force this week. I must be getting old because I was taken by how pretty all the mums looked dropping their kids into primary school. The dads in boring chinos and a blue shirt or paint spotted cargo shorts not so much 😆

SaferHaven · Yesterday 08:22

Lots of striped co-ords here. Either t shirt and shirt combos or wide leg trousers and cardi/t shirt ones.

Few maxi dresses knocking about as well.

Younguns seem to veer towards denim shorts and cropped tops/vest/halter tops.

TheLemonOtter · Yesterday 13:34

Your outfit sounds nice @Nangula! Interesting that a couple of you have seen some black - black linen is a classic summer look of course, but it does seem to be a vibe round here, and the black vests too!

This is making me realise I don't think I leave the house much except to exercise! Or if I do I take no notice, as I was in Waitrose yesterday and couldn't tell you what anyone was wearing.

Everyone around here is walking the dogs at 5-7am wearing loose short shorts and vests, but no bottoms out.

It's pretty much the same at the gym, only it's tight short shorts and crop tops or tight fitting vests. Or bikinis/swimming costumes around the pool of course.

TidyMaid · Today 07:21

My floral button through dresses will have to be kept for WFH then. I got enthusiastic 2 years ago.
Some of the maxis I see seem to have too much material just below the waist, and it appears to bunch up..

TakeMe2Insanity · Today 07:32

London zone 3

tweens: short denim shorts and vests or tshirt and cyclying shorts

20s: sports bra and shorts. Mini dresses, maxi dresses. A few bikini tops and shorts/skirts.

30s and above: wide leg trousers, maxi dresses, lots of colour.

over 60: all seem to be wearing handbag rucksacks, dull coloured clothes.

I haven’t seen women wear jeans for ages!

Meadowfinch · Today 07:40

Colourful summer dresses.

My wardrobe for this weather consists of
-Blue & yellow linen maxi dress
-Green floral woven cotton maxi length shirt dress
-Blue & green stripe cotton sleeveless dress
-Long pale blue linen wrap skirt with pink cotton knit top
-Long green linen pleat skirt & white linen top.

At home, shorts and cotton tops. It's too hot for anything else.

I live in a place that is seemingly the retirement flat capital of Britain and I am seeing a lot of shapeless seasalt linen dresses that make even slim people look like big square boxes.

I have a shapeless Seasalt linen dress and couldn't care less if it makes me look like a big square box. 😅😆

It keeps me cool in summer, that's all that matters to me (not that I ever wear fitted clothes anyway, hate them).

lovecotswoldsliving · Today 07:56

Yesterday at school, I wore wide knee length beige shorts, a puff sleeve pale pink top and pale pink ballet pumps. Literally at least 100 teenagers said ‘ Miss, you look great’. That made my day.

ConverselyAttired · Today 07:58

I wear jeans every day for most of the year but it's been too hot here for about 6 weeks now and I miss them. Can't wait to get back into my barrel legs and trainers.

Anyway, here in the SW the teens and 20s women are all in black cycling shorts (presumably the same people who would be in black leggings 10 months of the year) or have gone the other way and are wearing baggy wide leg cotton trousers and tunic top things. Very Free People. 30s/40s is either denim shorts or midi dresses with a lot of the t shirts with say lemons on or seafood or pasta (I own a few; see attached).
I saw a woman in a brilliant orange t shirt dress which I think I have seen in Tu.
It's really hard to judge what the style is in this heat. I would never normally walk around in my running shorts and neon cropped Puma running top but I did just that yesterday to do the school run in 34 degrees.

I'm loving cropped wide leg trousers but I'm in the minority here.

DeafLeppard · Today 08:10

Lots of brown which I haven’t seen as much of before.

Itssohot26 · Today 08:11

The two women I saw recently who stood out for looking lovely were wearing a co-ord, like a short top with cut-outs joined to a wide trousers type thing!

In the hairdressers the other day, the owner was wearing wide knee length black shirts with black trainers. She must be about 50 and it was a young look but she looked great. My hairdresser was wearing a striking black and white loose dress and the first thing I said was, I like your dress! I came home and googled black and white dresses but didn’t come across anything similar.

Agree that I haven’t seen many floral dresses with white trainers.

London.

Dresses: linens, animal print, block colours

Jorts, denim or khaki or brown or cream Very short shorts, with nice tops - lace, crotchet, broderie

Cool linen shirts in white, pale blue

DM sandals, Birkenstocks, metalic sandals, black sandals, tan leather, trainers

Linen co-ords, linen trousers in neutral colours or cobalt blue. Stripes - a bit pyjama-looking.

Teenage girls are mostly in the shortest shorts you can possibly imagine and vest tops. Or activewear. Boston clogs/ Crocs/ trainers

sandalbed · Today 08:17

I’m in London too & I’m not really a fan of the denim knickers.

Wherethedogsits · Today 08:19

I’m by the beach so it’s all surfy and boho here.
Lots of surf brands like billabong, animal and volcom and lots of free people dresses and flip flops.

Flowered midi dresses, often with denim jackets. Posters on here tend to say this look is dated but it's in full swing here in Cheshire.

still about in the Home Counties 😂 throw in white trainers as well.

Google “Kent mums on train” for further info 😂

flowery maxi, denim jacket, M&S tinnies and picky bits en route to ABBA voyage for a night out!

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 06/07/2026 06:04

Different looks. Younger women in Lycra shorts, vests and either crocs or trainers. Older women wearing dresses. Either short, loose fitting ones or midi/maxi. Lots of colours and florals. Sunglasses and sandals or trainers. Some people in wide legged light coloured trousers.
I have seen a few women wearing black summer dresses but not many. I tend to notice people wearing black in summer as I don’t think it’s ever practical. You can wear black for the majority of the time, why wear it in the heat?
I do see young males wearing black. Often in heavy, winter type clothes and I always think they are up to no good.

Judgey then.

Bananananna · Today 08:29

Round here there’s always a lot of Lucy & Yak style clothing or loose fit trousers with bright patterns and mismatched t-shirts. But outside of that, I’ve seen quite a lot of young women wearing a throwback to the 90’s - string vest top with an aline cut and a lace detailing along the lining. I have to admit, it brings out this weird sense of discomfort-like a time in life I just want to forget.
