How many clothes do you own and actually wear regularly?

CrowsInMyGarden · 03/07/2026 15:05

I have so many clothes. I only wear a small percentage of them. I have sorted out lots of stuff to sell on Vinted/Give to charity shop. This is the year that I finally get shot of all the stuff that I don't fit into, all the stuff that is uncomfortable, all the stuff that just doesn't look right......

Just wondering really how many of each item does the average person own? I don't suppose there is such a thing as an average person but hit me with your answers.

How many of the following do you own and do you wear everyting in your wardrobe?

Dresses
Skirts
Jeans
joggers
smart trousers
nice tops
t shirts
shorts
Jumpers

Anything else

373 items according to my wardrobe management app. This includes everything - bags, shoes and all types of accessories from scarves through glasses, hats to bag charms. I do wear about 90% of these items regularly, some are seasonal so obviously only in use during their season.

babschicken · 05/07/2026 10:08

I am ruthless with taking stuff to charity every season. I get overwhelmed if I have too much choice! I try to only keep what I wear regularly and put lesser worn stuff in a big bag under the bed (funeral / wedding stuff etc).
I have around 5 pairs jeans, 10 pairs other trousers, 7 dresses, far too many tops to count including going out tops, tees, long sleeved tees, vests, 10 jumpers, 7 pairs shorts, 5 skirts, 10 pairs gym leggings/shorts, 10 gym vests. I have everything hanging up so I can see it easily. I stick to a palette so most things go together.

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 10:13

@DancingNotDrowning I'm now only wearing the good stuff. I nearly died last year and feel I only want to wear jaegar and up. One sniffy friend remarked on my new top (new in a box for five years, I was too fat). I going to a major lunch this coming week and I shall be super chic as I now don't get out much! I just love clothes. It's my thing.

Gettingbysomehow · 05/07/2026 10:14

I have loads of clothes and wear most of them according to season.
Im thinking of making a capsule wardrobe for each season and store the clothes Im not wearing to make space. Either that or make my 3rd bedroom into a walk in wardrobe.
Actually Im going to do that. I live alone so That bedroom is not being used.

DancingNotDrowning · 05/07/2026 10:21

@Mrsredlipstick I would imagine a near death experience would sharpen anyone’s outlook - I’m sorry that happened to you but glad you’ve been able to focus productively with n treating yourself to the nice stuff

I’ve done that with bags, shoes and jewellery for a long time but I can’t help myself with clothes.

I’m getting better but im petite so a sucker for buying trousers off the shelf in M&S for example

Beachtastic · 05/07/2026 10:24

DH laughs at me browsing through the overstuffed wardrobe in desperate search of something suitable. I find myself ruefully humming Morrissey, "I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear..."

I really admired my mum, who right up until her death last year was still wearing the dresses she bought in the 70s and 80s.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/07/2026 10:25

I’m retired, and I’ve recently realised that I have a ‘summer uniform’ (normal U.K. summers that is, not heatwaves). It consists of (at the moment) 3 pairs of cotton trousers, wide but not stupid-wide, leg. 2 pairs navy, one pair ivory white, and about 8 assorted stripey cotton tops (Seasalt Sailor tops) - some of which I’ve had for several years now.

For Heatwave temps I have 2 x long, loose, cotton dresses in a sort of oversized cheesecloth that doesn’t need ironing. 🙂
Otherwise I don’t do dresses, and I don’t do shorts any more.
I have half a dozen ‘really hot weather’ tops, in cool, thin cotton.

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 10:29

I love a marks trouser. I'm tall but busty so I can't wear just anything.
I don't wear florals (I look like a vicars wife).
I avoid button and absolutely no double breasted or peak lapels.

luckylavender · 05/07/2026 08:03

I’ve lost over 5 stones in the last few years (WW) so I’ve bought loads of clothes but tried to get rid of loads too. Up until then I hadn’t worn a dress or shorts in years. Numbers are approximate
Dresses 20 +
Skirts 15 +
Jeans 9
joggers 2
smart trousers none
nice tops 8
t shirts 15 +
shorts 3
Jumpers 1
Anything else
2 cardigans
15 shirts
2 tank tops
3 pairs of wide leg floaty trousers
2 pairs of dungarees
1 jumpsuit

Edited

Also around 8 pinafore dresses, probably 10 sweatshirts and 15 long sleeve tees, some of Breton type.

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 10:39

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER wasn't there a thread noting women of mature years wear stripey bretton tops, gillets and slim trousers? I was mortally offended but gave up the tops (I live in the country so I'm not giving up my puffa).

I dare say you’re right, but I no longer GAF about what anyone else thinks of my clothes. To me they always look nice, in a smart-casual way, and are comfortable and practical.
BTW just the other day a young member of the staff at my David Lloyd asked me where I’d got my (ivory-white) cotton trousers! She said she been looking for similar for a while, with no success. Could only find the super-wide leg ones, I expect.

I'm working on a new policy: around 10 t-shirts and two of everything else i.e. jackets, summer trousers, jeans, shorts, trainers, sandals, etc. I really don't think I need more than that.

2 coats ! I have 19 that i can think of but they are spread over 3 houses.

lljkk · 05/07/2026 11:08

Dresses maybe 8? ; I rarely where any of them (but I need one tomorrow)
Skirts (only 1 that I wear reliably at least 1x/yr, maybe 2-3 others in wardrobe)
Jeans : these I wear a lot in cold weather, maybe 5 prs
joggers: 4 prs, 2 are cast-offs from my sons; they get worn on cold winter eves
smart trousers : 2 or 3 prs; very rarely worn
nice tops : I'm not sure what is! maybe 14 in this category; very rarely worn
t shirts I wear these a lot, many sleeve lengths, maybe 30-40 total
shorts I wear these a lot in warm weather, maybe 12 prs
Jumpers : maybe 9, rarely worn.

I try hard never to buy clothing.

You didn't mention sport clothes, sleeveless tops, hoodies, coats, jackets, sleepwear, gloves, arm warmers, footwear...

Melarus · 05/07/2026 11:10

It's interesting about the seasonal wear. I've got maybe three outfits that work during a UK heatwave (cotton shift dress, cheesecloth dress and linen skirt/airy top). Previously that's been enough. (This is for wearing to work - my office air-con is rubbish)

Now, we're going into our third heatwave already this summer, and I've worn all those outfits to death already. Find myself looking longingly at linen sleeveless dresses, even though I don't really need another dress ...

Life’s too short. Buy it!

BitOutOfPractice · 05/07/2026 11:31

i have about 40-50 dresses and about 25 jumpsuits. I wear all of them regularly.

i have about 20 skirts and 20 trousers of various sorts. Only one pair of jeans. I don’t really wear them much.

t-shirts and long Sleeve tops - hmm around 40 I’d say. Shirts and blouses about the same. jumpers - 30ish. Hoodies 20-ish.

I have a lot of gym clothes (I go 5-6 times a week)

I love clothes. I love putting outfits together.

I plan my outfits for the week on a Sunday. I find it stops the early morning “reach for the same thing” panic and I like to think it means I put more interesting outfits together.

TRS20 · 05/07/2026 11:38

Dresses about 100
Skirts 10
Jeans 8
joggers 15
smart trousers 30
nice tops 10-15
t shirts 40
shorts 0
Jumpers 50-60
long sleeve tops 10-20
coats about 20

pyjamas 5 pairs
dressing gowns 8 for all seasons
plus gym wear

ToadRage · 05/07/2026 12:05

I have loads of clothes too and like you I probably only wear a percentage. I hate getting rid of stuff and only arrange a charity shop/textile bank bag when I run out of storage space or my husband nags me. My spare room chest of drawers is full of clothes that don't fit but i can't bear to part with and I swear I'm going to slim into them (like that ever happens). The items that get worn most are leggings, it's rare that i go a day without wearing a pair. If i am staying in i will chuck on a pair with a long tshirt, if i am going out I will usually wear a dress, I have a lot of dresses that i wear on rotation, summer dress and winter dresses.

OneBagAdventures · 05/07/2026 13:20

I'm a big fan of minimalism to the point where every single clothing (sans jacket) I own can fit into a single 40L Patagonia Black Hole Duffel.

Tees: going out = 7, home = 4
Jeans: 2
Trousers: 2
Jacket: 1 down, 1 wool
Vest: 1 sweater, 1 packable puffer
Shorts: going out = 3, home = 4
Shoes: 1 boot, 1 running, 1 sneakers, 1 birkenstocks

A majority of those are plain in solid colours, so I never get bored as there are endless mix-and-match options.

MrsBird03 · 05/07/2026 19:53

Just totted mine up
14 pairs of shoes
10 dresses
5 skirts
5 coats / jackets
4 handbags
12 pairs of trousers / shorts
22 tops
16 jumpers / cardigans
2 gym leggings
2 gym t shirts
2 long sleeve running tops
2 vest tops

Still feels a massive amount when I look in the wardrobes, but gives plenty of options for seasons / events.

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 20:47
