How many clothes do you own and actually wear regularly?

CrowsInMyGarden · 03/07/2026 15:05

I have so many clothes. I only wear a small percentage of them. I have sorted out lots of stuff to sell on Vinted/Give to charity shop. This is the year that I finally get shot of all the stuff that I don't fit into, all the stuff that is uncomfortable, all the stuff that just doesn't look right......

Just wondering really how many of each item does the average person own? I don't suppose there is such a thing as an average person but hit me with your answers.

How many of the following do you own and do you wear everyting in your wardrobe?

Dresses
Skirts
Jeans
joggers
smart trousers
nice tops
t shirts
shorts
Jumpers

Anything else

I thought I didn’t have lots til this thread! Not going to count everything but everything I have, I wear. I also buy duplicates and scour Vinted and EBay for repeats of successful items if I know they will continue to work well. I wear a lot of dresses but most of my wardrobe is mix and match, I never buy anything that won’t go with things I’ve already got.

I regularly sell things on Vinted.

Bananalanacake · 03/07/2026 22:37

Place marking for the name of that app. I also have loads of clothes, over 40 tops and 30 nighties. I'm doing the not buying clothes for a year challenge. So nothing new for a while.

minipoodlemum · 03/07/2026 23:27

Dresses maybe 80 - work, formal, casual
skirts 15
shorts 15 including gym shorts, denim, smart and beach
vest tops 20
t shirts 20
blouses 5
nice tops 25
jumpers 20

i have loads of clothes, I love wearing different things. I wear a large proportion of my wardrobe and recycle it on Vinted.

OneNewEagle · 03/07/2026 23:32

I have one wardrobe full and one chest of drawers. To help my MH I finally finished getting rid of everything not worn last autumn. It really helped. I am now only buying basics as things run out. I do have less than I need of certain things but hold on until I find a decent option of what I’m after.

i do an autumn summer change over and put the old seasons away in storage boxes in the top of the wardrobe. I will get rid of things I’ve not worn the end of this season. so far a pair of cropped jeans and a skirt that are tight around my middle will go plus whatever’s worn out.

This month I’ve had to replace a few basics so have two new sets of short pyjama sets (old ones already binned), a new pair of shorts and a multipack of new vests. I’m still on the hunt for a couple more decent summer dresses, a couple nicer tops and a new skirt.

I’ve always gone by wherever I work I won’t give them back my hard earned wages. So if in a supermarket I’m not having them paying me in food or a shop the product that the store sells. No employer is that great that they deserve your wages handed back to them.

Kuromi86 · 03/07/2026 23:52

I have easily over 2000 items of clothing, I will admit I haven’t worn everything but genuinely I do wear a lot of different things. I love to pull out random bits and put outfits together, I can’t be doing too bad as I get quite a lot of compliments from people including strangers on my outfits and have been photographed a few times (although for all I know it could be for a what not to wear page or something 😂). But I did once sign something many years ago for fashion book. I love clothes, I love putting things together and being overdressed is my thing. If I feel confident I’m happy. Should I have less, yes I probably should but I regularly offload to my local charity shop and sell off more expensive things when I have the time. My clothes room is my happy place.

Dresses - 80/90? Maybe more?
Skirts - about a dozen?
Jeans - none
joggers-none
smart trousers-none
nice tops-about a dozen shirts and blouses, maybe more?
t shirts - none
shorts - none
Jumpers- mainly cardigans 30/40?

I wear something different every day to work and change to something different every evening and I do try to make sure everything gets worn eventually. I'm out a lot too.

I absolutely love this !

JustGiveMeReason · 04/07/2026 01:21

Some of the numbers on here are unbelievable

I mean, in the sense of ridiculous.

MummyWillow1 · 04/07/2026 23:17

Dresses - 3 that I usually wear for work in the office, 2-3 ‘party’ dresses for winter, 3-4 casual maxi dresses for summer
Skirts - 2
Jeans - 2 pairs I wear and another spare pair I rarely wear
joggers - 0
smart trousers - 1
nice tops - 3
t shirts - 6-10 I think
shorts - 7 but I am about to go on holiday, I will probably cull some after
Jumpers - 6-7 plus a Christmas jumper and a couple of cardigans

I also have a denim jacket, a light jacket, a rain coat and a soft shell jacket.

I have a couple of playsuits I only ever wear on holiday as well.

Rocket1982 · 04/07/2026 23:51

Jeans: 12 but including 'decorating' jeans with holes, maternity jeans from 10 years ago and several pairs too small
trousers: 10
dresses: 10 casual 10 smart
tops and t-shits: about 30 but a lot are old and not great looking.
PJs: 4 pairs plus several other nightshirts
blouses and shirts: 5
Jumpers: 12
cardigans: 5
blazers: 7
coats and jackets : probably 10 but 4-5 I wear regularly.
Skirts: 8
leggings: 3
shorts: 5 including 2 for running
swimsuits: 4
scarfs and shawls: too many, probably about 20 I don't really know where most of them came from.

I know I have a lot but I have amassed this over 30 years. A lot of it from eBay or sales. I have barely changed size since around 16 years old and I still have stuff from teenage years that I wear occasionally. I have sometimes sold a few things or donated to charity but I have kept most of what I have acquired. Probably 20 items are hand-me-downs. Half of the trousers are the newer items as I hated skinny trousers so have bought 5-6 pairs in the last few years since wide leg got fashionable again.

GameOfJones · 05/07/2026 07:46

I'm not sure on numbers but I have a standard double door wardrobe in my bedroom and a second one in the spare room where I store out of season or special occasion clothes. Pyjamas, underwear, swimwear and gym kit are in drawers.

I am adamant that I'm not taking up more space than that so if I buy something new, something else has to go. It has focused my mind when shopping as I really have to love what I buy and slowly my wardrobe has become a place where I truly love the clothes I own and they all fit me.

luckylavender · 05/07/2026 08:03

I’ve lost over 5 stones in the last few years (WW) so I’ve bought loads of clothes but tried to get rid of loads too. Up until then I hadn’t worn a dress or shorts in years. Numbers are approximate
Dresses 20 +
Skirts 15 +
Jeans 9
joggers 2
smart trousers none
nice tops 8
t shirts 15 +
shorts 3
Jumpers 1
Anything else
2 cardigans
15 shirts
2 tank tops
3 pairs of wide leg floaty trousers
2 pairs of dungarees
1 jumpsuit

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 08:33

At least 500 pieces of clothing (39 black trousers at one point). 100+ pairs of shoes.
I culled and sent 21 bags to charity and more than half my shoes
I'm semi retired and spent forty years in fashion and beauty.
I'm moving shortly so another cull is needed.

socks1107 · 05/07/2026 08:40

Dresses about 12, 6 for winter and 6 for summer
skirts maybe 6 - split over summer and winter
Tops I’d say 25 ish again split over the seasons
jeans 6 pairs
2 pairs of work trousers and 4 pairs of linen trousers

RosalieRosa · 05/07/2026 08:43

It's a good question. I think I actually do wear my whole wardrobe but just in different seasons. I am usually in dresses in summertime but always trousers in winter. Even with merino tights or leggings, I get cold easily in dresses.

I am quite good at getting rid of anything I don't wear.2

ETA: I think I have about 50 items in my wardrobe including footwear and outerwear, so definitely a smallish wardrobe

DancingNotDrowning · 05/07/2026 08:46

I own lots and have been making a good effort of getting rid of things I don’t wear.

i don’t mind having a breadth of clothes to cover all eventualities but i have finally realised having 40 work tops when i have favourites that are what i mainly wear is a waste.

my Whering app has everything I’ve worn in last two years I think there is probably as much again that I haven’t worn. In last two years

How many clothes do you own and actually wear regularly?
LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2026 08:46

14 clothes rails full, 80 drawers, over 100 pairs of shoes and boots. Wear everything (well apart from evening wear as I don’t really go out to posh do’s).

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 08:49

@LaurieFairyCake you beat me!

LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2026 08:58

And I’ve sent 13 full black bags of clothes to charity in last year.

I’m currently selling everything that doesn’t fit (as I’ve been every size from a 22 to a 6) on Vinted. About 300 items to sell, sold 30 this weekend.

Mrsredlipstick · 05/07/2026 09:05

@LaurieFairyCake wow. I was the same size 8-24. Now a 16 and happy with that. I have a bag from 1995 and the clothes are so beautiful but tiny ( I don't want to diet into them as I was obsessed with my weight then). My DD doesn't want them so I'm waiting on my grandchildren or DIL when that happens.
I'm happy to give away lots but I sell the designer stuff on eBay. I opened a drawer on Friday and found stuff from 2016!
I don't buy much now as I WFH part time.

WatchingShadowsPassingBy · 05/07/2026 09:36

Dresses - 50

DancingNotDrowning · 05/07/2026 09:43

@Mrsredlipstick i find DD wants stuff the week after I’ve finally got rid of stuff. See super low rise g star jeans and sequin butterfly tops that she ridiculed at 15 and by 19 was incredulous that I’d have given such beauties away!

im currently planning a new dressing room and I’m going to commit to only keeping what will fit in the room. Maybe

DancingNotDrowning · 05/07/2026 09:51

I have a great friend who is always fabulously dressed. She’s really altered my thinking in clothes. She has a small wardrobe but everything in there earns it’s space twice over. I often see her in the same items but put together in different ways.

if I compliment anything it’s always “oh I picked these up from Joseph on the kings road in 1992 - absolute steal” or “these are from a sample sale in Milan after my youngest DD was born”

it helps she hasn’t put in an ounce of weight in thirty years. I want to be her when I grow up (we’re the same age!)

Denim4ever · 05/07/2026 09:57

I have a lot of denim hence the username. I have 16 pairs of jeans, 5 denim skirts, 1 pair denim shorts, 1 denim jacket and 4 denim shirts.

I wear them all even the ones that are not current styles.

Aside from denim, I have quite a lot of clothes but regularly cull and have not been buying much in recent years.
