Should I get one or will I regret it?

Not me Id end up looking like Boris Johnson on a bad day. Long is the only way I can look half decent.

I’ve got a chin length bob with quite a long fringe. My hair is thick and wavy, so I either let it air dry until damp, then use a hot brush to smooth and straighten, or just air dry with leave in conditioner for a beach wave effect. I love a bob. My hair type suits it, I can’t go shorter than chin length because I look like a Lego head!

Trainup · 22/06/2026 21:16

I got one thinking it would make my limp hair look better. I was wrong! It looked flat and frizzy and was hard to style. Looks much better longer with a curl or wave in it. But if you are blessed with lovely hair then go for it

nothingcangowrongnow · 22/06/2026 21:39

No. But if you want it fine… I’m enjoying long hair having had a bob for ages! Long hair just looks better on me

ladycarlotta · 22/06/2026 21:42

I was always a bob person but recently I've gone for a wolf cut/shag type thing instead. I like that it's still shorter but has a bit of texture and edge to it. Is it the cut my mum had in 1987? Yes. Do I mind that? Surprisingly little.

Pretty sure everyone cool has a wolf cut now.

Loads of women I know who have turned 40 over the last three years seem to have marked the occasion with a bob.
I have really thick wavy hair and flashbacks to being called mushroom head at school when I had a bob so don’t think I’ll go for it!

DrumsPleaseFab · 22/06/2026 22:01

loved mine in The 90s

not sure I could pull it off now 😅

it is such a RISKY haircut, it can be so good and look cool, feminine, sexy, on trend….

… or it can look like you are an angry vegan Soviet era librarian

I've had a bob for 35 years. I've had other styles but a bob suits me best.

I've had variations on it, but it has suited me from my late twenties to now in my sixties. For me it always looks sharp and stylish. I stopped dying my hair 6 years ago and it still looks good grey/white, which in my opinion is not the case with older women with long grey hair or non descript short hair.

I do have a fantastic hairdresser who is an excellent cutter which is what you need if a bob is going to look its best.

828Pax · 22/06/2026 22:19

I've just got one after having long hair my whole
life (41 now!) and oh my gosh I LOVE it!

Hahaha the pencil !

BauhausOfEliott · 22/06/2026 22:30

I’ve got a short French bob that reaches just level with my earlobes. I get absolutely loads of compliments on it and it requires zero effort.

My hairdresser is an absolute genius at cutting, though. There are thousand different ways to cut a bob and it needs to be tailored to you and your specific hair type and face and requirements. I see a lot bad bobs.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 22/06/2026 22:33

I have a bob and I’m definitely not cool 😂

QueenOfHiraeth · 22/06/2026 22:35

I had mine cut into a bob a while back and found it hard to make it look good as my hair is soft and fine.
Final straw was when we stopped at a motorway services in the daytime, mid-week to find that every woman in there had the same haircut but I was the only one under 70!

OP definitely see if you can "try out" styles virtually before going for the chop but remember, it's hair, it will grow back if you don't like it.

I had a short cut aged about 10 and hated it, so had long (fine, straight) hair since then. Last year I lost it all (chemo) and had it cut into a bob before it all went; surprisingly, I liked the bob. It was kind of 1920s style, shorter at the back and chin length at the front.

Currently my hair is growing back coarse and quite curly at the back, but it might straighten eventually. I'm thinking of aiming for a bob as it was so much easier to care for than long hair.

I would love to see photos of the bobs you are talking about (the good ones) and advice on how to achieve the gentle waved / scrunched look.

Kingfisherfly · 23/06/2026 14:02

I think it's true a bob can look cool....on cool people.

Every time I've had one it's lank and flat, frumpy and aging. DP, who didn't know me then, has seen pictures and says I look 10 years older than I do now 10 years later.

Been watching Fleabag again in the past few weeks. Phoebe Waller Bridge’s hair is really awesome in that show. Quite like the pencil as well actually….

I agree with this. If you already look cool, then you'll look cool with a bob. If you don't already look cool then there is a very good chance you'll look like a frumpy librarian on their way to bible reading class. (Apologies to all librarians and bible readers).

I love a bob! Sadly my hair needs weight to get it to hang down. A lesson learned after 3 attempts.

Hair products and straighteners have moved this on a lot. I was definitely a mushroom head at school but love having a bob now. So much quicker to dry and straighten if you have thick hair too.

notacooldad · 23/06/2026 18:48

I love my hair.
I never thought id have my hair chopped but then I saw a photo of my hair from behind and it looked awful. My hairdresser did a jaw length bob and I think i held my breath all the way through thinking id refreit it. It .ade me look great. I can use the tongs and put individual curls in or use the tongs and have it flicked out. That was two years ago.
Since then I had it cut to an ear length bob and now its in line with my lips.
I won't have graduated bob though.

Angus1637 · 23/06/2026 18:59

What's a bob? I don't know what you're talking about.
