Should I get one or will I regret it?

I went for a chin-length bob (after having just below the shoulder length) two summers ago and OMG it was a massive mistake! I think it really depends on your age, your hair type, your overall style, the exact cut and length you go for, but I looked really middle-aged and frumpy with a bob and I couldn't grow it back out fast enough. It's become known as 'the summer I wore a cap', because I literally did for two months until it had grown out a bit!

This is what disturbs me!

I have a chin length bob and love it. I looks good straight but better in messy waves, which is how I usually wear it.

Mine would be messy waves or blow dried. It’s not dead straight so would likely be waves mostly.

I’d not do it as others do, I’d do it if you think it will suit you.

i think it can look good on women with the hair type that takes it, the mild wavy one, on great condition hair and you have a certain modern and very currenr style . But I think it can also look very frumpy and dated if your hair isn’t right for it, or your face and your style isn’t really what anyone would describe as current.

my own hair is long and wavy, which is how I will be keeping it.

cheezncrackers · 21/06/2026 13:51

The other thing that is bloody annoying a bob is that it isn't long enough to tie up properly unless you go for a long bob. I'm a runner and not being able to tie my hair up properly through the hottest part of the year was a flipping nightmare.

GreatOffWhiteFalcon · 21/06/2026 13:53

Looks awful on me - fine hair, round face.

I do this every few years and it is always a disaster. My hair is thinning at the front but thick and frizzy elsewhere. When it’s long the weight pulls it down but in a bob my hair is light and therefore fans outwards in a ridiculous bell shape.

I have realised that women with exciting bouncy unbothered curls have actually put a lot of effort into making it look natural - left untamed to air dry my end result is frizzy, out of control, wild and ridiculous. So I scrape it all into a bun and wait for it to grow back 😫

I’d say your hairdresser isn’t cutting it right if you’re getting a bell shape. It needs to be tapered inwards. I’ve no idea what it’s called but I watch her do it to mine, as well as using thinning scissors on the ends.
I've had a bob for three years - I do have very fine hair so do need to rough dry it, but finish with an old Babylis Big Hair rotating brush. It stays that way all day.

Stickersandlollipops · 21/06/2026 13:56

I’ve just done this. I had very long curly hair, I’ve now got a chin length bob that I straighten and put a slight wave in.

Zero regrets. I love it.

I really enjoyed my long curly hair for years and felt very boho. But recently I realised that I dreaded wash days as it was such a hassle. Now it’s a breeze. I also love how it looks. There are some great instagram accounts which give ideas on how to style a bob.

Going against the grain here, I think a bob suits very few people. I think (and this is JMO,) that you have to be:

Young/young-ish (Under 50.)
Pretty.
Slim.

I've not see many women look great with a bob who don't fit that criteria.

sharkstale · 21/06/2026 14:15

I've had a bob a few times and have regretted it every time (I've finally learnt from my mistake 😂). I have wide shoulders and having such short hair seems to accentuate that. Just doesn't suit me.

IMO, its less to with age and more to do with face shape and if your hairline at the back doesn't go too low.

notatinydancer · 21/06/2026 16:27

Just have to be careful it doesn’t look like a helmet or Lego hair.
Some effortless looking bobs are actually a lot of work.

PeonyBulb · 21/06/2026 16:29

I have fine hair and had a bob years ago. I had to wash and style it daily. Long hair suits my lifestyle better

palanoma · 21/06/2026 16:30

Would someone who is willing (!) post up some pics of various bobs. I'm older now and used to have a great one. Since covid I just cut it myself and stick it up in a bun/pony tail. It's ok down, but a bit too long. I have been (am) unwell, so need something to buck me up a bit. I'm light blonde from ye olde bottle 😊

SinuousTendrils · 21/06/2026 16:57

This was me when i had my bob cut about 6 months ago. Thankfully now grown to chin length and in a ponytail mostly.

It seems like everyone cool has a bob.
DonewhatIcando · 21/06/2026 17:09

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods
Its a darker root, smudged down the hair, like in the photo, I like a root smudge as I can dab some root tint on my parting in-between salon visits

It seems like everyone cool has a bob.

I also think you need to be quite slim to pull off a bob and look stylish, if not then a bit more length can be very flattering, it’s not just about stature but face shape and generally if you’re over weight you may have visible fat on your face and neck too, be it chins, cheeks, jowls, neck etc which a bob can exaggerate and make look worse.

you also need to look at your style. Would your dress be considered stylish and current, as if not a bob can also exaggerate the dated look.

its one of those hairstyles that can go either way. Look modern and fresh or dates and frumpy.

bit like a mullet for men, all the cool kids are rocking them, but you’d not want your middle aged husband fronting up with one in most cases..😂

DareDevil223 · 21/06/2026 19:37

I always go back to a bob, I have thick, wavy hair and it really suits my hair, the shape of my face and my general style. I'm over 50 but I'm interested in clothes and have a modern look. I am slim, I don't know if that helps.

I don't look like Lord Farquad, Grayson Perry, frumpy, a Labour Cabinet Minister or any of the other tropes that get trotted out when bobs are mentioned.

TheOGCCL · 21/06/2026 21:06

I've had a number of bob style hairstyles over the last few years. I think it depends on your hair type. My hair is a bit longer now and the weight makes it easier to manage (it's not curly or straight). I also think some people think a bob is something not long. A bob is basically chin length, not collarbone. They can be ageing if they are over styled, helmet hair as someone mentioned up thread.

MrsLindaBelcher · 21/06/2026 21:16

I had a Parisian bob and loved it. Made me feel cool and chic! I’ve grown my hair long, but I’m itching to get it cut shorter again.

familyicons · 21/06/2026 21:19

I think Mumsy unless styled very well

maslinpan · 21/06/2026 21:22

I've had a bob for the last 37 years, so that must make me incredibly cool 😎

This was my experience, too. I had a short, blunt, graduated bob in my late 20s and loved it. I have thick, straight, dark hair and it was easy to style and look polished and modern,

A similar hairstyle in my late 30d didn’t work and really aged me.

ouchynose · 21/06/2026 21:43

SoScarletItWas · 21/06/2026 06:16

What’s your hair type? How much styling can you be bothered to do?

My bob was gorgeous but it’s the only style I’ve had where I had to properly blow dry it every time. If I air dried I looked like Little Lord Fauntleroy caught in the rain.

It was best when it grew out to a shoulder length lob; easier to manage and more versatile.

This tell me all I need to know about bobs: they would not suit me 🤣🤣

I have thick curly hair and you have given me a very vivid mental image of how I would look 🤣

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 21/06/2026 22:04

I think they're ageless but they look best on women with thick hair and fine facial features. Extremely unflattering if it's the other way around.

RedRock41 · 22/06/2026 20:56

BS. When had my first DC there was diversity. Thereafter almost everyone had straight blonde hair (longer than bob). Keep being yourself people and nowt wrong with curly brown hair, weave, Afro-Carribean styles, grey, ginger and lots more besides. Not to mention the hairdryer Kemi gave the front bench on this very topic…
