Do not buy from 'Made By Jessica'!

I bought two dresses online (£39 each) from what I thought was a UK-based boutique after a recommendation on a thread on MN. The website shows a pregnant woman, and says that 'Jessica' is closing her boutique due to the imminent arrival of her baby and is selling off stock at half price. The OP said about how much she loved the shop, etc.
Alarm bells should have rung when they ask for £4.99 insurance (to send a parcel from Surrey?). Also because there was no description of the fabric content given, only that it was a 'light and airy summer fabric'. They took a long time to arrive (direct from China?) and came today. The material is almost plastic, and they are a heavy weight, huge, shoddily made, with no labels (fabric content, washing instructions, brand) apart from 'Medium'.
Looking at Trustpilot, lots of people have the same story. They are Hong Kong based. There does not seem to be a UK store. 'Made by Jessica' my arse. They promise easy returns and refunds, but I don't hold out much hope, and it will cost a fortune to send them back to China. But will update.

How are people so gullible though?

I've just looked at this - the email addresses shown on the "reviews' are almost all two women's names, like DebbieGrace.com, and the ones that aren't are like DebbiePlaysTennis.
Reminds me of something I bought a few years back from a Chinese company - exactly the same name format, and the reviews were like "My boyfriend bought me this. It's so cute". So helpful!

Please go to WHOP.COM and submit details of your complaint about Made by Jessica . The AI is wonderful and extremely helpful . It will guide you through the process and hopefully result in a full refund . I submitted mine today . Good luck everyone

Hi Beth, I've had a look at Whop and I can't see how it's relevant here. It seems to be for people who want to start their own business. Also it's based in the US
Please educate me if you know better!

I am fighting with made by jessica( they don't deserve capitals ) for my money back but also on behalf of everyone who has been scammed by them ! They offered me 20%, 40% then 60 % refund I declined them all . My bank is disputing their transaction. I requested a cancellation of my order , told it had been dispatched...still in the warehouse? Warehouse? Why would there be a warehouse I asked, this garment is meant to be handmade. Why is the photograph a photoshopped one from Temu where the identical dress is £15 ? Why can't I phone you when you claim to have a number which is disconnected? Why is the dress delivered screwed up in a tiny packet making it unfit yo try on without ironing which would break the rules for returning .Why isn't the dress finished ? It needs hemming. Why if you are in London which we know you aren't are you telling me to return the dress to America? Where is the return postage label ? Need I go on ? I am sure you all know the rest of the negativities about this deceitful site . I am dealing with WHOP.COM as well as my bank .IF I get a result I shall add it here

you have said. They are a disgusting set up and I feel so angry that these bastards are getting away with it. I hate all this online ordering, it’s such a risky business now but as all the shops are closing on the high street ! We are all being conned. I did contact Trading Standards but realise now it’s a bloody foreign set up and they have no control. So I have lost £34 . Will only be ordering from from reputable British organisations now. Anything from America is tat anyway. Best of luck.

Thank you Bethlaw65 I have escalated my complaint with WHOP .COM as they sided ( am I surprised??) with mbj ,their reason..
I had not returned the item nor provided proof that I had ..
I have not returned it as I do not believe they will send me any money ..also there were barely 5 days between final documents being submitted by me and them making that decision..
The post would not have gotten the parcel to USA in that time even if I had posted it .
They need to send me a postage paid label before I might consider returning it . I am not giving in to this lot !! I am going to make the dress presentable by finishing it off properly after all I paid good money for it and the dress and I deserve it!!! I shall post the result on here ...not of my sewing skills but of my battle !

Good for you. The dress I received was not any dress anyone would want to wear. Nothing like the photo of course. A vile plastic like material and shapeless . I have never seen anything like it in my life. I am annoyed with myself for falling for this tat. I have always avoided Shein and Temu but I fell for this one. I will learn from my mistake and avoid online shopping unless I’m using proper decent businesses. The internet is full of scammers and charlatans…

Why are people recommending this WHOP outfit? It's a social media platform/online marketplace, it has zero power, cannot get your money back or force a chinese scam merchant to give you a refund. Utter waste of time.

Your UK bank is your only option. And spread the word far and wide about these scam sites so others don't get caught.

Loads of these about, same with the cat rescuer/ol lady/teenage boy crafting 'handmade' bags etc with some sob story. All crap from China with scary AI people. Saw some of FB recently with comments from those believing these stories and asking how they could purchase. It's a step up from sellers on Etsy pretending they make the crap they're flogging.

Update! Remember I (reluctantly) accepted their offer of a 30% refund? It was delayed for weeks at their end by a tech problem they would sort out soon? Well, I've had an email today saying that unfortunately, I'm now outside the 30 day refund period and they're awfully sorry but they can't refund me. The system won't allow it. But they can offer me a 45% discount voucher towards something else on their website! It took me all my strength not to tell them where to poke their voucher.

So it's back to my bank.

They are still, meanwhile, advertising about Jessica's baby being due/store closing down!

This does not surprise me one bit . That is why I am not returning the item. I do not trust a word that they write and every time I interact with them directly or via WHOP I add it to my file with my bank . This news is also useful so it will be told to Santander . They have delaying tactics that are exceptional !
So far I have no further news most certainly nothing positive but I refuse to give in .

I've had to return something to China and it's a nightmare - had to do a Customs form with codes etc . I had already let Barclaycard know it was a fraud. Would you believe 6 months later the items have been sent back to me? 😂

Made by Jessica - from the front page, appears to be based in London. On my credit card statement it says the money was taken in the UK (Altrincham? Somewhere like that) and the purchase comes under "educational supplies" (?!). Their website (deep in the Ts&Cs) says everything comes through Hong Kong. Certainly that's where the package came from. And then, the address to return the goods is USA Warehouse, Suite 614 something building, which turns out to be a P.O. Box not a warehouse (quel surprise!) which they say is not manned. So who knows WTF is going on??

If you Google WHOP.COM they have an office, probably virtual, in Altrincham... which now makes me wonder about British Retail laws and if by being there they have shot themselves in the foot .... my bank has requested a statement from me to support my claim and it has to not include quality being poor but factual as in not the right size, fabric not as advertised...which is quality I know but it relates to the description and what actually arrived . They have also advised I should return the dress... I am very reluctant to do that as the postage and packing will be about £16 , this would put my expenditure up to £60 ..... money I am certain to never see again ,especially as the address in USA is unmanned !!! And probably has a jammed post box!!!
I am going to continue the fight as I keep saying and when I win I hope to be able to tell the world how to do it !!!!!

@SaraSJ56 what is the significance of Whap.com? I am missing the relevance here. They are a portal, a web hosting company like Wix, GoDaddy... I am not young enough to have the noun for the site WHOP.COM however they are handling my complaint against made by jessica as it comes for want if a better word their jurisdiction. Hope that makes sense . I am using every form of attack I can find in the hope to reach a result that will help others .

They don't really want you to send it back. They say it will take a long time, which it undoubtedly will because someone goes to the PO Box about twice a year. They tell you it'll be much quicker for you to accept a 30% refund, then will likely delay this, as they did me, until you run out of time. If you send it to them you might well get your package back six months later because no-one's collected it ( as a PP did).
