I need a dress for my DS’s wedding and it seems impossible to find. I’ve seen what MN can come up with so I’m hoping it can work its magic for me.

I’m late 50’s, 5.3, BIG boobs (36H) and weigh about 143 pounds. I’d like short or three-quarter sleeves and a hemline below my knees.

The problem is that most dresses for big breasts are wrap dresses. I don’t where the myth comes from that wrap dresses are good for the big of boob - they certainly don’t flatter me. They just accentuate my breasts. And the current fashion for big, almost puffed sleeves does the same.

So what I’ve been hunting for is a midi dresses with simple sleeves and a dropped waist, or at least a lowish waist. I can’t wear dresses with each breast defined - don’t know what you call that shape but it doesn’t work on me. I love vivid colours - pinks, purples, greens. Patterned or floral or plain.

Am I looking for a unicorn? Would be very grateful for any steers. The wedding is semi-formal- a Sunday lunch.

TIA

Have you looked at Hobbs? They do simple sleeves that don't make you look like a tank. Lots on vinted, too.

Joolay · 15/06/2026 07:18

SO agree about wrap dresses.

I like that 1st Phase Eight dress op. V neck is flattering for a big bust.Agree with you on wrap dresses.

TealReader · 15/06/2026 08:47

What’s your budget?

Would you go with separates? I’m very curvy, short bodied and generally find separates easier- the top can be tailored to fit then?

Divebar2021 · 15/06/2026 08:59

I think you need a v neck fit and flare. There are a trillion on sites like John Lewis. It might be worth you going to a big department store and trying a few on because the length of the V and waistline etc are going to be different. I think also a partial / faux wrap can be good too ( where it’s sewn at the waist or under the bust ) although I agree with you about wrap dresses in general - they often don’t have enough fabric over the bust and gape horribly. I thought this shirt dress was a pretty option ( although it might need some tailoring or poppers added under the placket ) - it’s a bit off piste

Me & em are always pretty elegant although I’ve never tried the dresses

If you want an overall softer look on the body ( as in less fitted ) I’d look at brands like Monsoon who will have so Indian silk or cotton style dresses that can be very lovely.

I really like that Boden Imelda dress - the pattern is lovely as is the colour and I think it would be really comfortable to wear.

Yes, I really don't know where the 'wrap dress for big boobs' thing came from. Whenever I've tried one on I can't get it off quick enough! They can look elegant on some people, of all sizes, so what's the secret formula - shape or placement of boob? Waist-to-hip ratio? But then I'm tall, so according to most SM I look good in anything (laughs bitterly).

One style that really does suit is the tea dress, although they've been everywhere for a few years now so even I'm getting a bit bored of my go-to. But they are the one type of dress where buxomness can be an advantage. Check out Nobody's Child Starlight range, if someone hasn't suggested it already! You can always do a Google lens search for similar styles.

Trinny and Susannah have a lot to answer for!! The boden Imelda looks lovely.

Go for a personal stylist session at JL.
The 'flattering wrap dress' flatter nobody.

SO agree about wrap dresses.

And they never sit right. You have to constantly fiddle with them.

I’m a size 14, F cup and absolutely love Popsy dresses. Even their wrap dresses suit me really nicely, and I usually have the same issue you do with those!

This dress is really nice for a wedding:

They also do a matching jacket for it:

This one is also lovely for a wedding:

And again there’s a matching jacket:

Although I do like the purple one they show in the photo of the dress!

I wore a similar dress in the same fabric to my cousin’s wedding last year and had lots of compliments. It’s a more structured type of fabric so looks more dressed up than you might assume at first glance of the photos. They do so many wonderful dresses though - and they all have pockets!
