Can I return an M&S jacket and repurchase at the sale price?

Bought a jacket from m&s on Tuesday (should be delivered tomorrow)… just seen it’s now gone in the sale at half price. Grrrr! Now out of stock in my size… but does anyone have any experience of taking it back to store for a refund, and buying it back at the sale price?! Bit cheeky possibly but very annoying!!

I think you can take it back, but there's no guarantee that the same item will go into the sale in store.

I witnessed this in Marks and Spencers a few years ago. The person ahead of me in the queue returned a relatively expensive top and wanted to buy it back at sale price. The person behind the counter told them that returns went into the press behind and were taken out at a later time. Manager was called and said the same thing.

I'd set an alert for when it comes back in stock online, there's bound to be some returns. Then return the original.
I've taken things back when they've been reduced but never bought the exact item back at the till, they might be a bit funny about it but no harm in trying.

If you ordered it, it has to be returned to the warehouse. Even if you take it back to store, its still returned to the warehouse.

Why would it be embarrassing? Return the item. Get the replacement in a separate transaction if it bothers you.

I mean you would need to find that item on sale, buy it and return the old one. They are unlikely to reduce the full price one you return in front of you there and then

sometimes stores will give you the difference back. This happened to me while shopping at Talbots (US). Bought dress at full price. Was told it would be on sale the following week and to come in with my receipt and they’d refund the difference. That sales associate saved me 50 dollars, bless her! That is a Talbots policy. Might m&s have similar?

I've done this on a number of occasions but my M&S store offers automated collection / returns if you order online so I don't use the tills.

I collect/return this way, so would order the one in the sale online for collection in store and then return the full price one using the automated machine at the time of collecting the other one.

I'm not embarrassed about saving money this way - more money to spend on holidays is how I see it 😎

You’re within your rights to return it & get a refund at the price you paid but they might not agree to put it back on sale immediately. You can ask , what’s the worst that can happen ?

Have you ordered the right size? If so and you want it and it's out of stock then why don't you keep it?

Sickening? Wouldn't go that far! I worked in Topshop in the 2000s and only if you didn't have a receipt you'd get the sale price back, which is fair enough.

I think returning an item and then saying oh I’d like to buy it again immediately afterwards to save money would be pretty embarrassing?

One thing to buy another one online and return the more expensive one. Another to have that conversation with the sales assistant. Plus if it then goes back to the warehouse it’s gone completely

Very CF and against policy, you won't be allowed to do it. Saw it all the time when i worked at M&S. As PP said online orders are sent back to the warehouse. Cf will try anything for a bargain

And M&S online purchases that are returned in a clothing store, don’t go back to the warehouse they put them on the shop floor.

If you have a receipt just return it and do a separate transaction then it's not embarrassing and the shop assistant can't do anything about it.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it tbh. But at my M&S you have to scan your code and deposit the parcel through their returns slot, I’m not sure if you’re able to return orders at the tills anymore?

I did with a small piece of furniture at Next. But she wouldn't let me just re-buy it instantly. She had to put it back on the shelf and asked me to wait (I think she was worried she'd get in trouble).

It was actually quite embarrassing to be honest and I cringe at it now.

I'd be tempted to contact customer services, especially as it hasn't actually arrived yet and ask if they'd be willing to refund the difference, maybe as a store voucher.
