Can I return an M&S jacket and repurchase at the sale price?

Bought a jacket from m&s on Tuesday (should be delivered tomorrow)… just seen it’s now gone in the sale at half price. Grrrr! Now out of stock in my size… but does anyone have any experience of taking it back to store for a refund, and buying it back at the sale price?! Bit cheeky possibly but very annoying!!

Only if you have no receipt

Of course you are right. Apologies. It is rather annoying though.

I wouldn't find this embarrassing at all. If they tried to embarrass me, I'd put it on them and tell them I'm quite annoyed that it went on sale so soon after I purchased new.

I find M&S’s indication of in-store stock unreliable, so I wouldn’t depend on it.
A couple of Christmases ago, a MNer wanted an embroidered black velvet jacket in a particular size which she couldn’t source and quite a few offered us offered to help her. Just a thought.

I’ve done it in dunelm. Picked a reduced set off the shelf. Returned my full price one and then bought a new one. Same last year with a fan from Amazon. I contacted them re it being half price and it was them who told me to do it.
can’t understand what’s embarrassing about trying to save money

Not read the full thread, but I’ve done this before at M&S. The teenage boy on the till thought it was funny, but scanned everything in for me, refunded and then let me re-buy there and then.

I clearly have no shame as didn’t feel embarrassed at all! I’d rather the saving was in my pocket and not M&S 🙈

Exactly M&S have more money than I do and they are still getting money off me.

I’ve had this happen a few times with M&S and it’s very frustrating. Once customer service did refund me the difference after I emailed and the next time they refused, but got lucky and managed to buy the same size in the sale a few days later. However I’d worn the full price item on holiday by then so I swapped the bags and returned the sale item under the full price order (it was still in the return window), so it worked out. I’d email first and see if they will, if not might as well ask in store or hold off wearing the item while in the return window and see if there’s an online return.

I once worked at M&S over Christmas and people doing this in the January sales became such a problem that they told us to stop doing it. If people wanted to re purchase at the sale price they had to wait for it to be returned to the racks and then rejoin the queue ( which went round the shop!). Not many bothered!

Another way is to buy it again at sale price then return the full price item with full price receipt.

This is what I’ve done in the past.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 29/05/2026 09:03

If you return it they have to refund the receipt price. You can then rebuy it at sale price but only if you can find your size out on the floor. They don't have to put your returned jacket out and the sale may only cover certain sizes.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 29/05/2026 09:07

I think as they don't have your size in stock I'd just keep it. The jacket style is in the sale but they haven't got your size in the sale is how I'd look at it.
