Can I return an M&S jacket and repurchase at the sale price?

Bought a jacket from m&s on Tuesday (should be delivered tomorrow)… just seen it’s now gone in the sale at half price. Grrrr! Now out of stock in my size… but does anyone have any experience of taking it back to store for a refund, and buying it back at the sale price?! Bit cheeky possibly but very annoying!!

I ordered an expensive bag online once, and a couple of days later it was reduced in the sale. I couldn’t be arsed to send it back and reorder, so I just emailed the company and asked them to refund the difference, which they did.

Your situation is a bit different though, as it’s out of stock in your size, so they might refuse.

Contact customer service and see if they will reimburse the difference. They are really nice and helpful.

I've done it in John lewis, £60 difference! Wasn't letting that go. They had a special code on till for it, do just took same one home £60 better off.

I once bought something from phase 8 and it went on sale the day after so I phoned them up and said can I return it and order the reduced price one, they said just keeo it and we'll refund the difference as it was cheaper for them with postage.

Maybe it's a US thing, but I was once actually advised to do this. The CSR I spoke to on the phone said it was really dumb, but they couldn't refund me the difference so 'suggested' I return the 'original price' item and then buy one at the 'on sale' price. I did as she suggested in 2 separate trips to the till and there were no raised eyebrows or cat's bum mouths from the staff.

A lot of places here will refund you the difference if an item goes on sale within 24-48 hours of your purchase, it's seen as a 'goodwill gesture' as they want to retain customers. I've learned to ask before I purchase if something's going on sale soon. They aren't required to tell you, but I find that most do.

Yes you can go to the till and get a refund and buy it back there and then.
Did exactly that myself last year.
It would only be embarrassing to those who care.

I have emaiked m and s before when this happened and they refunded the difference worth a try.

i tried to do this in Gap once with a pair of trousers and they wouldn’t let me. 😭I just returned them then flounced.

They don't do that unless you have no receipt.

I worked in a shop where this was a perk of the scorecard, we often had card holders buying lots of things before the sale in the hope they'd go in the sale. They returned the things that didn't.

Often things go to sale because the common sizes have sold out, so you haven't really lost out, sale price wasn't ever an option in your size.

Over the phone is less embarrassing, so I'd only try that and accept it if they say no.

Well I’ve done it a few times now with different retailers, and been refunded the difference so 🤷‍♀️

I have done this in M&S…but I found the sale item first on the shop floor and bought it. Then later the same day (20 minutes later 🤣) returned the full price item (with the receipt). I went to a different till point though.

Can you not order the jacket at the reduced price online and then take the full price one back for a refund? That’s what I usually do.

You'll get the full price refunded if you have a receipt and it's within the refund period.

I tried this with M&S cardigan a year ago.
The cashier said its not allowed to return and buy again while im still in there.
I said if she can atlest hold it for me and someone else can buy it for me. She said not holding sales items.
She that she will put back into the sale rail and i can come in 30 mins and buy it if still available.
It was 9am so I standed near the till, watched her to put it into the rail and watched it like a hawk for 30 mins!
It was totally ridiculous.
She also watched me so I could not grab it.
Luckily the shop was almost empty so I managed to buy it!
But it was embarrassing...

Was it that silky bomber jacket that peeps were saying was amazing on another M & S thread ? If it was I bought it and returned it as it was definitely not worth £110!

Definitely not if you have a receipt. You get back what you paid.

I must have no shame whatsoever because I did it with my wedding dress and didn't feel a flicker of embarrassment.

I've done it, but that was back in the day when we had tills and proper service (yes, it was like that once). It was an item I'd bought in store though, not ordered.

Most retailers let you return things within 28 days. If the OP can buy a new one at sale price, she can return it with the full price receipt and get a refund.

Some retailers will give you the difference if you show them the receipt in your wallet without needing to return the item.

Another way is to buy it again at sale price then return the full price item with full price receipt.

Can you check if any stores have stock? sometimes under where it says out of stock online, you can check what stores have them?
