Shorts scare me but I need some please.

Help! I need some shorts for city breaks in hot places. Below knee. Hand luggage only so they need to roll up small, not get overly creased (so no linen etc) and can just throw on with a t shirt.

They'll be worn with either practical trainers/walking shoes or sensible walking sandles.

I'm short and fat and my bum and thighs are huge. I'm very self conscious of my legs.

It is not going to be my best look(!) but I'd like to reduce the awfullness if possible. Any tips or spotted anything?

High Street budget.

Why not go for a nice dress?

My Tesco have some crinkly material shorts with a draw tie waist that would fit this bill! They would roll to nothing and no way could crease

Ultraalox · 08/05/2026 09:52

I can’t link as it’s Tesco so not online

Daftypants · 08/05/2026 11:12

I never ever wear shorts ,mainly because of varicose veins and spider veins .
I would look at full length or 7/8 length trousers with a straight but slightly wider leg .
my preference would be linen but you’re not keen on that so I would look at Landsend as I’m sure they’ve got some nice light cotton summer ones

Search on m&s for "summer trousers", they have lots of options. The "linen rich" ones are a blend with viscose so they won't look crumpled in 5 minutes.

I rather like these

Edited

another vote for M&S culottes/ cropped trousers. I have various from the last few years, wide leg and floaty, skirt-like in vibe.

I had one pair of leopard print ones from new look which were great too.

good luck!

Itsahardknocklifeforus · 09/05/2026 00:58

Keep away from patterns OP. You'll end up wearing them with a plain tshirt and they almost always look like something you picked up in a market.
Have you tried cotton barrel trousers?

Aluna · 09/05/2026 10:23

Shorts are so unflattering on big bums and thighs I would go for a cotton knee length dress with some frilly briefs underneath (the kind you wear under miniskirts). I wear cotton dresses for sightseeing and I’ve never had a problem with a rucksack causing the dress to ride up.

katepilar · 09/05/2026 14:01

Why are you looking for shorts when you dont like them? Why dont you stick with skirts and dresses?

Shorts are so unflattering on big bums and thighs in your opinion. If I want to offend the world by daring to wear shorts on my enormous size 16 arse I will. “Unflattering” is such a stupid term. Just because you think you don’t look good in something, don’t project it onto everyone else.

I’m size 6-8 but ok.

You can wear what you like, I prefer dresses as they’re more comfy.

These don't fill your criteria on paper, but I think you should try these
I'm 5'6 and they come just above the knee.
They're linen mix but I've absolutely thrown them about in my case (I don't iron) and they're fibe- I'm on holiday now.
They're a comfy waistband, very wide on the thought, and have a good size range available. And they're £14. Nice thickness.
The cullottes in the same style are also very good.

It’s really nasty to say that all larger people look bad in shorts because you’re super slim. Some curvy women look amazing in shorts. It’s all about the fit.

I might be wrong, but I think the poster sounds rather young, which may contribute to her lack of understanding.

As she also recommends that the OP wears frilly knickers under her dress, as if everyone does it ... The last time I wore frilly knickers under mini skirts, I think I was about seven ... 😁!!!

I didn’t mention my size, it only came up because you insulted me. Not sure why you think it’s ok to tell me I look bad in something & am projecting it onto others.

summeronthehorizon · 10/05/2026 10:37

I bought very thin trousers for a city break last year - heat wave thrown in to the mix made the heat unbearable. I did brave shorts but was equally as cool in the trousers. They were essentially crinkly ones that were in with the beach clothes. Not see through but very thin and didn’t require to be ironed.

3luckystars · 10/05/2026 12:33

Frilly knickers? Do you mean like PE shorts we had in school or underwear. I would love to see what you mean.

I’m my opinion, big or small, size has little to do with, shorts are hard to look good !

You might look fine from the front but there was a poster here last year who saw a photograph of herself from the back wearing shorts, and was horrified! I think she said she looked like a tour guide or Steve Irwin, it was a hilarious post but I think it put a lot of us off shorts for life.

Aluna · 10/05/2026 13:01

Frilly is maybe the wrong word - scalloped or lace.

I really struggle to find trousers that fit. I love the blue but I can tell they wont be comfy over my thighs. They look like they'll crease really easily. I know there will be some creases but I want to minimise them as much as possible.

I recently bought a pair of similar looking trousers from M&S for a warm city break. They are half linen, but as they are dark blue don't show the creases (don't know how to link, I'm sorry). They are called Linen-Rich Drawstring Tapered Trousers in Navy. Comfortable and not too casual worn with appropriate shoes/sandals. I am not sure that any shorts are suitable for a city, especially as a tourist, but that's just me.

I know the OP asked for over-the-knee shorts, but I just spotted some decent-looking, well-priced shorts on the Dunnes Stores website (apart of The Edit by Carolyn Donnelly, which does some pretty good clothing & homeware).

Just above-the-knee cotton or linen, but also longer denim skirt-type ones.

Light or dark denim:

Stone, khaki or navy cotton:

White, navy or khaki linen:

And crepe:

Lots of other linen/cotton loose trousers/dresses/tops etc too:
