Shorts scare me but I need some please.

Help! I need some shorts for city breaks in hot places. Below knee. Hand luggage only so they need to roll up small, not get overly creased (so no linen etc) and can just throw on with a t shirt.

They'll be worn with either practical trainers/walking shoes or sensible walking sandles.

I'm short and fat and my bum and thighs are huge. I'm very self conscious of my legs.

It is not going to be my best look(!) but I'd like to reduce the awfullness if possible. Any tips or spotted anything?

High Street budget.

Halara is linked to sweatshops btw

Oh really 😕 never bought from them myself but seen it mentioned on MN & thought was seen as ok

HaveYouHadYourBreak · 05/05/2026 22:57

They look good and like they could be hemmed so they arent ankle length. 🤣 The blue is a nice colour.

Search on m&s for "summer trousers", they have lots of options. The "linen rich" ones are a blend with viscose so they won't look crumpled in 5 minutes.

I rather like these

How short are they? I wonder if they'll fit over my thighs. They look quite snug.

I see you've moved on from shorts, or skorts, but these were knee length on me and I'm 5'5".

There are other stretchier ones if you search "golf skorts".

Also, I think some of these look nice and there are various colours and patterns.

Edited

I like those a lot but the person I'm going with has eyesight issues and the pattern would drive them mad! 🤣 Maybe I'll save them for when she's annoying me.

I like those too. I wonder if they'll fit my bum? There used to be a Roman in a shopping centre I need to go to. I'll look into whether it's still there.

That has made me sad - that you never know whether a shop will still be open.

Oh no no no

Below knee shorts are not what you need!

Shorter, or cropped or wide leg trousers

You really don't need shorts for a city, even in hit weather. Floaty or linen trousers are much cooler, more elegant and don't mark you out as a tourist. I wouldn't dream of wearing shorts in a European city, but with the right choice of trousers I'm never too hot.

I agree (other than the "don't mark you out as a tourist" bit - unless you are fully fluent in the language and have Google maps imprinted in your brain you will look like a tourist. And what's so terrible about looking like a tourist, or if you prefer a visitor to the city)

In hot cities, floaty light cotton or linen dresses or skirts. They don't wrinkle (much) but being wrinkle free traipsing round the Akropolis wasn't a priority.

Yeah, I may as well have a big flashing sign that I'm a tourist whether I go but meh.

Some creases are inevitable after being shoved in hand luggage but there's a different between some creases and looking like you slept in it.

At first glance maybe - but the legs look very narrow, if the OP is sturdy of thigh. And look at the crotch ...? Does it not look a bit ... weird??

Why so they do, very odd. OP bin this idea.

Eleanor you're GOOD at this 😍

Do people in European cities not wear shorts? Pretty sure I've seen plenty over the years, or maybe they're all tourists lol

Either that, or I just have an unhealthy obsession with people's crotches ... 🤔??!!!

Potooooooooes · 06/05/2026 00:25

Hahaha 😆

EleanorMc67 · 06/05/2026 00:27

What about these, @HaveYouHadYourBreak ?

Navy, black or white linen & viscose blend - so they'll still be cool to wear, plus they won't crease anywhere nearly as much as pure linen (confirmed in reviews).

And comes in several lengths (with the actual inside leg measurements provided for each option), so you should be able to get a version that's just on/over your knee?

They flare out just enough so that they should be fine on the thigh - & the crotch doesn't look weird either ...!

I swear by these in the summer. I have them in so many colours. They don’t crease. Lightweight. Really comfortable.
