Shorts scare me but I need some please.

Help! I need some shorts for city breaks in hot places. Below knee. Hand luggage only so they need to roll up small, not get overly creased (so no linen etc) and can just throw on with a t shirt.

They'll be worn with either practical trainers/walking shoes or sensible walking sandles.

I'm short and fat and my bum and thighs are huge. I'm very self conscious of my legs.

It is not going to be my best look(!) but I'd like to reduce the awfullness if possible. Any tips or spotted anything?

High Street budget.

And allow you to eat as many tapas as you wish ... I love my voluminous maxi dresses!!!

😂

angelfacecuti75 · 06/05/2026 18:22

What shape are you e.g apple /pear? I find the Roman shorts they are called bengaline ones ...and come in lots of colours (but I usually get black as they are expensive, but not so expensive that you couldn't afford 1/2 pairs -about £20-25) . They are slim fit & like pedal pushers , they pull on & are stretchy and go up to a size 20 but they do have a plus sized range . Google is your friend. Yours clothing do similar . Hope that helps. Not read the whole thread sorry.

Thank you for all the comments and links. I'll start working through them. ❤️

Lots of links - really helpful thank you!

Dresses and skirts are a no because I'll be carrying a big rucksack. I've had too many accidents where big rucksacks (or small rucksacks and chub rubs combined) have ended up pulling up my skirt and flashing my knickers without me knowing. The last time I was walking along quite happily thinking I looked good when a taxi driver pulled over to tell me to pull my dress down. I was very thankful to him because so many other people (including women) had just walked past without telling me.

We'll be using lots of trains and buses etc so maxi dresses wont be practical. I dont want to have to think about whether what I'm wearing is suitable for what I'll be doing that day.

So basically it's just shorts light trousers, tshirts, cardigan type things, a hoody and a pack up rain coat. Zero effort dressing. 0 style points. 100% tourist.

I know you'll all start about cardies next! 🤣 My favourite cardi has dinosaur buttons and you can prise it from my cold dead hands.

Wide leg silk/satin trousers.

They are cooler than something like denim shorts.

Light and airy!

You’ll look like a scout in knee length shorts. You may aswell just wear a dress or wide leg trousers much more sophistication anyway.

I was going to say something similar. Whilst I do not have the legs for shorts, every now and then I contemplate buying some, then remember a post from a few months ago - the poster said they made her look like a Scout leader taking the kids out on a trip.

The combination of my legs and Scout leader vibes means the shorts stay in the shop.

Leavesandthings · 06/05/2026 21:16

Scout leader 😂

I think just swerving any attempt at style entirely by wearing sports shorts like you'd pick up at Sports Direct is somehow better than scout leader.
"Yup, I'm practical and I own it".

(This is me 😂)

these would look good with a dinosaur cardi 😊

Nonononomaybe · 06/05/2026 21:17

I am short and fat and wear them all
summer - often get asked
where they’re from and get complimented on them

mdinbc · 06/05/2026 21:27

I absolutely think you should get shorts! Longer ones are practical and can be stylish. But I do think a try on is necessary. Even though my legs are fairly good, I have a certain length that I need to hit or they look awkward. Do you have a shop with your size for a good try-on?

If you are taking public transport, I find a knee length skirt or capri/midcalf length trousers are good so the back of your legs are not sitting on plastic.

lingmerth · 06/05/2026 23:15

@EleanorMc67@Potooooooooes I have these shorts and happy to report plenty of thigh room and crotch is fine!

You could buy your clothes from charity shops. They have plenty of cheap clothes that are almost new.
I've donated clothes with tags on before now.
I've bought expensive brand clothes that looked new.
You might need to rummage but I recently got a jumper (danish make with tags still on it £40 new for £4) and I've had lots of comments on how nice it is.

For a lot of reasons, that is much harder if you are plus sized. Next time you’re in a charity shop, have a look to see just how little there is on the rack at size 20 or above. And if you’re size 24 or above, good luck with finding a single item in a charity ship.

VividDeer · 07/05/2026 06:45

Op i love your dinosaur buttons. Not at all what I had pictured. (More frugi)
I know what you mean about skirts and rucksacks. I definitely would have told you (and have told other ladies)

You seem to know your style, body and practical limitations. Have a great trip!

DrasticAction · 07/05/2026 07:29

@minipie what are the sizing like in new look normally im 12l14

HaveYouHadYourBreak · 05/05/2026 22:33

I'd look awful in that dress! 🤣 like, really awful.

Dresses and skirts are my go to but I want to minimise packing as much as possible.

I really struggle to find trousers that fit and cotton trousers like crease like anything.

I know exactly how you feel @HaveYouHadYourBreak , I don't get on with shorts either.

For sightseeing I wear leggings and a lightweight floaty top. Or (more often) a dress with "chub rub" shorts underneath. I have several lightweight dresses in non-creasing material that just roll up into a corner of the suitcase.

The trick is finding the right walking sandals that look pretty but still have sufficient arch support.

Nothungrycat · 07/05/2026 13:11

Going back to useful shorts. I recently bought these https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/p/025048/mw/coast-stretch-womens-shorts/teal/ - and they're really nice, and seem a bit looser around the thigh than the illustrations show. They have a useful bit of stretch and - on me at 5ft 4 - come just above the knee. They're also on sale at the moment and come in a variety of colours. Might be worth a try?

I know these are pricey but they are so thin and light (I've worn them in tropical countries), they roll up really small, creases fall out as soon as you put them on and they wash and dry really quickly. They are my go to travel trousers. They do come up short so I go for the longer length and I am only 5' 3". (Though shorter might work with sandals).

@BleedinglyObvious I have completely given up on second hand. I have been ripped off too many times on Vinted despite being careful. Charity shops by me are full of crap and as someone else said, generally the clothes are too small. It sometimes seems like fat people dont donate clothes! When I walk around, I see so many overweight people around but where do they send their cast offs? Admittedly, a lot of local overweight people dont wear stuff I'd want to wear anyway so maybe it's a moot point.

With the exception of this trip I try to buy less but better.

I've always worn my clothes until they die.

BleedinglyObvious · 07/05/2026 19:25

Define fat. I see all sorts of clothes in charity shops like 56" waist jeans.
Somebody could be fat but not plus size.

I wear my clothes until they're rags.I donate ones that I don't ever wear.
