Dress me for my 50th please

I'm looking for an amazing outfit for my 50th birthday in July. My theme is sparkles and glitter, so the outfit needs to be sparkly and glittery.

Can you help please?

I won't be happy with full on sequinned outfit. I want something that will shimmer and shine.

I'm so unstylish I have no idea what body shape I am. I've recently lost weight, so there's some saggy skin on my thighs and upper arms.

I like my shoulders and upper chest on show.
My waist has recently been refound.
I've always had an overhanging belly
My new runners calves are looking alright.
I love bright colours.

Size 10/12

Budget up to £100, although I'd be quite happy on vinted.

Hit me with your best options.

TIA

The Roman shimmery dress

Oops - just saw that a pp already shared this!

Oh, hello.

This is looking good...

Yup that's my favourite so far.

They’re both really good options for sparkly & elegant - in a more low-key or slightly more fashion-y way. Not sure that they match the OP's taste, as what she's liked so far is quite different.

Was there any need for this @EleanorMc67? You’ve established that OP’s taste differs from your own but instead of just bowing out, you had to get a snide little dig in. Really unpleasant.

There's nothing unpleasant about what EleanorMc67 said. She has gone out of her way to try to be helpful.

Look at this product that I found on google.com

I wore black wide legged sequinned pants, a white cropped silk teeshirt (I’m still really sad it got a bit grubby and I binned it) some new trainers (shell toes) and a denim jacket for mine 🤣 loads of people were really dressed up (it was in a ‘cool’ bar)

Me too! Very elegant and pretty.

This looks great. Very Studio 54! I love the gold, but what’s your colour?

I was going to suggest a Bardot top if you like your shoulders. Sexy without being revealing. I just got this one from Primark and it looks fab (I’m late 50s, size 10).

Agree you need a loose fit on the skirt if you have a bit of a tummy. As with the dress above. Preferably lined to stop it clinging (you can have lining sewn in). Have you considered separates, such as a Bardot top with skirt, culottes or wide, cropped trousers? I think culottes (with pockets) would look fab. They can be so flattering.

Well, I wasn't expecting that when I opened your link! No sparkles or sequins anywhere to be seen - but it's a really nice outfit!

That's helpful to hear, thank you

I think I'd agree with @Linenspots - if you set a sparkles & glitter theme, you have to lead by example!!

What are you talking about??

I made that comment because, though I personally quite liked those two dresses, the OP had subsequently posted more about what SHE liked. She's after something a bit shorter & more revealing than I'd thought initially, as she's lost weight & wants to celebrate that at her birthday. And that includes dancing lots!

From that info, the Scamp & Dude one seemed too "low-key", meaning too classic, long & fitted a dress shape to dance in (albeit sequinned). And the Ganni one seemed too "fashion-y", meaning that it was brown not bright, & too short. So I thought they were probably not what the OP was after.

My initial suggestions were also probably on the wrong track. So after the OP had replied with more info, I added a few more that might suit better. When some popped up from Shein in my search, that's when I bowed out. Others seemed to be finding some good options, plus I'm not keen on Shein, ethically - but the dresses were also not, IMO, what the OP was after.

Of course my fashion taste is probably very different to the OP's - as it will be to lots of others. It would be a dull world - & an even more dull S&B section - if we all dressed the same ...

But I do not understand how you think that anything I said was a "snide little dig", when I was simply trying to post some ideas that might suit the OP's requirements. Or that, from those two sentences, you think I have been "really unpleasant" ...??? 🤷‍♀️

Sorry, should have been clearer 🙏. I wasn’t suggesting for OP’s party. But more generally on good Bardot tops. And how separates might work (especially to hide her tummy), rather than a dress.

I couldn’t find any sparkly Bardot tops that were nice, though. Most were metallic, which OP says she didn’t like. Depends which colour she prefers.

Oh, no need to apologise! I just meant I was expecting dazzle, but it's a really nice outfit, which also looks more Massimo Dutti than Primark!!

IT'S OUT OF STOCK IN MY SIZE 😭😭😭

I just browed through this thread, and the Roman dress is currently in stock in 10 and 12.

Oh, hello.

This is looking good...

So I got this in red. It looks terrible on me.

I'm 5'4" and it swamps me. I've got small boobs, and it makes me look flat chested because of the pleats.

None of the others in this thread appeal.

Anything else anyone can find please?

Maybe summarise your brief again - size, style, dress length, colour, neckline etc. Also any brands you particularly like?

LeaveThem · 14/05/2026 08:16

I can’t wear dresses as my top and bottom sizes don’t match! Would you consider separates? I would be wearing separates with sparkly trainers! I think it’s a more modern look.

Whistles is surprisingly good for sparkles. Tops, skirts, blazers etc. Maybe with a bright skirt and sparkly shoes.
