Help! I need a chic dress for an event that's all about me.

I wrote a book, and I'm having a book launch, and I've realised I have nothing suitable to wear. It's an evening event - a stand-up drinks party sort of thing - and I'd like something elegant, but that once on, I don't have to think about.

I'm 5' 4' and a size 10 ish but I don't have lovely slim arms or legs, though they are toned. I do have a neat bust and waist and a flat stomach - but with curves rather than straight up and down. I'm mid-40s, and prone to sudden moments of being so hot I can't breathe, which is exacerbated by anxiety - which this event is likely to provoke (what if everyone hates the book, etc.)

My wardrobe is full of very beautiful dresses by Erdem/ Diane von F - but they're all from my 20s and, now, look a bit Princess of Wales around the time of her engagement. They also all require heels - which I've got - but having not worn them in about 15 years I don't think I can stand up in any of them for 2 hours.

I think I want something long (my ankles are very not good) and fitted around the top half of my body, long sleeved, and navy or black in a natural material. My budget could go up to £300-ish. The town I live in only has an H&M and an M&S. If anyone has any ideas as to where I could go online (I tried googling and everything it came up with looked nylon - or I couldn't wear a bra with it because it was backless - or it has a massive slit up one side.) I am in London between now and then for work, so could also look there.

The alternative could be a really lovely and quite dressy black top? (Not too hot!) I've got a long line in silk maxi skirts I could pair it with.

Oh - whatever it is also needs to photograph well without my having to think about angles.

Also - I haven't changed how I do my make-up since my 20s! Which is the best make-up bar to go to for a refresher?

And THANK YOU!

Congratulations on the book @Puffykins that's a fantastic achievement!

I'd start by looking on the me+em website.

I have 5 or 6 of their dresses & find them wonderful.

I also generally like how they style them in terms of shoes etc

I recently bought new Tom Ford makeup (bronzer, blusher & lipstick) from a Tom Ford counter in a big depatrment store as i'm also revamping my make up.

I'm mid 50s

Are you fine with patterns or, say, lace detail, @Puffykins ? As I'd say that plain navy or black, while they may look lovely, tend not to photograph that well?

What shape are your silk maxi skirts? Classic A-line? Gathered? What makes? I ask as the shapes will determine what tops might suit? Are they also from many years ago? Just black or do you have navy too?

EleanorMc67 · Yesterday 01:11

Not quite navy but a deep blue - which will photograph better IMO. And a bargain! Cotton sateen so it will have a slight lustre, & you should stay cool even with long sleeves.

If you're out of practice with heels, you could go for some beautiful flats? But if you'd prefer the extra height, I'd wear low metallic heels from a brand renowned for comfort. This is where I would look, in their sale section. Filter by gold or champagne, & your size, & they have options like the attached photos.

Pair with a similar shade of metallic clutch - or a beaded toning blue vintage one?

Me+Em do some lovely detailed silk/cotton shirts - if something like this paired well with one of your existing maxi skirts?

This isn't natural fabric, but is certainly breathable! Would look good with a maxi skirt (or wide silk navy trousers), & the texture/cut-outs means it should photograph well?

Navy with green, & will pair well with a maxi skirt.

Every book launch I've been to - even in Daunts etc- has not been dressy

IvyEvolveFree · Yesterday 04:10

Lots of lovely 90s style silk slip dresses around at the moment like this lovely one from Massimo Dutti:

I agree. An event being held in the evening doesn't mean that evening dress is needed. This is long, navy and a bargain.

I think I'd go with a nice pair of trousers, some tidy trainers and a top, plus either cardigan or jacket whichever you feel most comfortable in.
I also don't think you need to be dressed up.

newornotnew · Yesterday 04:56

And well done on the book!

EleanorMc67 · Yesterday 05:02

It's an evening drinks party - & it's her own bloody book that she's written & had published!!! Why wouldn't she want to dress up??!!!

OP - well done & I think you should absolutely dress up!! I mean, if you can't for your very own book launch ...

Anyone can wear anything they want of course, I was responding to the desire to wear something she didn't have to think about!

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · Yesterday 06:04

@EleanorMc67 - what is happening? Once again we agree! 😂 Jeez - a cardigan, for your own book launch??

@Puffykins, it’s true you can wear whatever you like but I’d want to feel a little dressed up, too. To me the main thing to address might be the sudden moments of being so hot I can’t breathe - because (I remember) this will absolutely limit what you feel confident in wearing.

Have you ever looked at

https://kindredofireland.com/

Everything (apart from a few tweed things) is fashioned from linen - and all the pieces are wondrously luxe and easy to wear. You couldn’t fail to look ‘dressed’. But not necessarily in a dress. Maybe a voluminous t shirt to go with your black skirt? Or a cunningly cut shirt?

(And, for the inevitable boring comments on linen’s propensity to crumple - you’ll be standing and chatting with a glass of champagne in your hand, not ferrying a dozen small children on an easyJet flight … )

Thank you all so much for all your suggestions! I’ll go through them all, but I immediately love that Me & Em top, which will look great with one of my existing skirts. In response to book launches not being that dressy - thanks, I know that most of them aren’t. However, due to the nature of what my book is about, and the industry I work in, and the location which is not Daunts, this one will be dressier than usual.

Thank you again!

Take a look at Reiss. I like the way this dress is styled with boots and a belt.

Puffykins · Yesterday 07:13

Thank you @Plasticdreams- I like that too but I fear I’d melt wearing it on a May evening in Mayfair. But I love how fitted it is. @ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClubthose tops are beautiful - and for a different occasion I’d love them. I think I need to keep my silhouette sleek though - at home I usually wear Toast sacks, which I love, but I know that photographed from the wrong angle I end up looking enormous as the volume looks like me not the top. But I’m thrilled to have discovered them, so thank you!
And @EleanorMc67the silk skirts are multi coloured (quite vibrant), a very slight A-Line, and can be worn either on the waist or on my hips. The Me & Em top that you posted would be perfect with them, and that is totally my style, too.
