Help! I need a chic dress for an event that's all about me.

I wrote a book, and I'm having a book launch, and I've realised I have nothing suitable to wear. It's an evening event - a stand-up drinks party sort of thing - and I'd like something elegant, but that once on, I don't have to think about.

I'm 5' 4' and a size 10 ish but I don't have lovely slim arms or legs, though they are toned. I do have a neat bust and waist and a flat stomach - but with curves rather than straight up and down. I'm mid-40s, and prone to sudden moments of being so hot I can't breathe, which is exacerbated by anxiety - which this event is likely to provoke (what if everyone hates the book, etc.)

My wardrobe is full of very beautiful dresses by Erdem/ Diane von F - but they're all from my 20s and, now, look a bit Princess of Wales around the time of her engagement. They also all require heels - which I've got - but having not worn them in about 15 years I don't think I can stand up in any of them for 2 hours.

I think I want something long (my ankles are very not good) and fitted around the top half of my body, long sleeved, and navy or black in a natural material. My budget could go up to £300-ish. The town I live in only has an H&M and an M&S. If anyone has any ideas as to where I could go online (I tried googling and everything it came up with looked nylon - or I couldn't wear a bra with it because it was backless - or it has a massive slit up one side.) I am in London between now and then for work, so could also look there.

The alternative could be a really lovely and quite dressy black top? (Not too hot!) I've got a long line in silk maxi skirts I could pair it with.

Oh - whatever it is also needs to photograph well without my having to think about angles.

Also - I haven't changed how I do my make-up since my 20s! Which is the best make-up bar to go to for a refresher?

And THANK YOU!

(@EleanorMc67 I spent an utterly joyful hour trying on lipsticks and shoes in the Mayfair Dries van Noten last week. I don’t know how it’s taken me so long to emerge from the lockdown conversion to ordering all beauty products and make-up online. I’d almost forgotten how much fun it can be, particularly with smiley, assiduous shop assistants with infinite patience.)

I have a drawer full of lipsticks that I will never get through in my lifetime (despite wearing it daily) - but I just made the mistake of looking at Dries Van Noten lipsticks online & now I am SMITTEN!!! Those cases, the colours - the different textures ... help!!! Did you purchase??!

I have bought this navy linen dress for an event in June. I have rubbish flat feet with orthotics so will be styling it with gold converse high tops, but you could dress up with some lovely heels and bag. It feels lovely on.

It's a lovely simple dress with just enough detail to make it interesting. Unfortunately I'm too pale & too squidgy of middle to wear it these days!!

Oooh - vivid! I love it!! There is something about the first wear in particular of a new lipstick that is such a treat ... And the packaging is SO gorgeous. Enjoy!!

Ha - "ham hock" sleeves! Made me laugh - they are indeed, if you mean the pink Reiss Leo Lin dress!!! I still think it's fab though - but I wasn't recommending it to the OP!!

Nor was I recommending the "Bacofoil in a field" Kindred of Ireland one (though it's fab in its own singular, rather red carpet way) - it was in joking response to a PP, at the thought of someone wearing one on a Ryanair flight ...

I think that the two dresses I posted (blue Joseph maxi & navy silk Reformation one) ARE elegant, along with the tops/blouses I posted. But you're right, it's all just a matter of opinion & individual taste.

I’m tempted by the Reiss pink one ! I also like the mad gold foil dress, but I am too busty to look good in that much top volume.
