What to wear to hip London wedding?

We've been invited to my niece's hip London wedding in July and I'm totally stumped on what to wear - dress code is smart summer and there is some walking between venues so teetering heels out (although not sure anyone wears these now?) and their friends are all hip media types and my SIL very glamourous!

I'm 5ft 6 currently 12/14 top and 14/16 bottom but on WLI so hoping I'll be a size smaller by then! I have an OK waist and upper body but heavy bum, hips and thighs and tend to wear waisted dresses & skirts with shirts or fine knit jumpers. Not a fan of floaty tea dresses or very formal 'Hobbs style' wedding outfits. I shop mainly on Vinted but would buy new for the right thing and brands I like including All Saints, Cos, Mint Velvet, Nobody's Child, Zara, American Vintage plus various Scandi brands.

Any ideas?

You could well be two sizes smaller by then, so I definitely wouldn’t buy anything until a couple of weeks before.

Definitely not heels for a trendy London wedding.

I would go for cotton/linen midi dress or skirt. Or maybe a wide leg jumpsuit.

Wait til closer if you think you'll be a different size. I'd say a jumpsuit, you could order some online to try on different sizes / styles, then return and find similar on Vinted.

I live in London and would love an invite to a hip local wedding!

I would wear a plain top, tulle skirt and wonderful shoes.

Hip is a bit subjective and even the scruffiest of us can scrub up for a formal wedding if we're the bride :) What sort of venues will you be at? Will there be grass surfaces? Is it an outdoor ceremony? Does she work in media or finance?

I'd define smart summer as a Me+Em sort of style. Tailored but not a day at the races style. Wedges and nice sandals rather than silk covered heels.

You might accidentally look like a hip London bride in that (fun shoes though)

For a smart summer look that balances style and comfort, tailored midi dresses or structured jumpsuits work well, especially if you’re avoiding floaty styles. Pair with low block heels or stylish flats for walking between venues. Adding a lightweight blazer or statement accessories can elevate the outfit while keeping it practical for a hip London wedding.

Ha. This is MN I guess, where every guest outfit is considered too bridal!

I think this would be wedding appropriate that you could accessorize to reach the desired level of hip.

Allsaints did a dress called Safiya. Perfect for a London wedding and comes in a couple of colours / prints. Regularly come up worn once on Vinted and Ebay. Great for a pear shaped.

Tallulah and Hope. I got a new kimono dress (£200) for 50 quid on Vinted.

What colours suit you and what about pattern?

How do you feel about getting your arms out?

Budget?

DestituteDesperate · 17/04/2026 07:22

I’d do a wide leg vintage polka dot jumpsuit in a plum or olive colour.

Gemstonebeach · 17/04/2026 08:20

I saw an influencer wearing this really dressed up, black sandals with gold coloured metalware, lots of gold plated jewellery, a woven bag with a silk scarf with red in it tied to it. Loved the look! https://www.zara.com/uk/en/nylon-midi-dress-with-ties-p04772308.html?v1=500301019&v2=2420884

Klements. I find the word "hip" really annoying (reminds me of of Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill cringemakingly being "hip young gunslingers" at the NME and travel guides over use it) but if any brand can claim "hipness" it can.

Have a look at Rixo, Sandro, Maje, Farm Rio Olivia Rubin and see if there’s anything you like.

There are a horrifying number of suggestions for polka dot jumpsuits - DEFINITELY don’t wear that!! There’s nothing wrong with it in itself but not to a young people London media types wedding!

I don’t move it in that world anymore but still have friends in that industry so have been to a lot of weddings. My go to was a dress from One Hundred Stars with some shoes from Esska. My absolute favourite thing I’ve ever worn to anything like that was a dress from Kitty Joseph that I LOVED but it was so distinctive you couldn’t wear it again….

SinisterBumFacedCat · 17/04/2026 10:21

My first thought was jumpsuit! Wight Suff have some nice ones or try Izabel London, good dresses on there for pear shapes like me (empire line high waists and floaty skirt’s) also reasonably priced.

Hell I wouldn't even try and second guess a hip young media-type wedding! In any case, surely there are going to be parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles and other mortals there too?

What I would do is pick something towards the relaxed end of 'smart summer'. I'd also go for separates as I find it much easier to find a good fit that way. Possibly a great big swishy midi skirt skirt as I really like them at the moment. I've never tried Kemi Telford but, if funds allowed, I might give her a go, plus I'd wear it again so it wouldn't be a one off buy. Maybe something like this one although not necessarily these colours (although I like green so it stood out). They also have a drawstring waist which sounds very useful for fluctuating weight.

I'd pair it with something very simple like a shirt or a very demure round neck cardigan. Flat shoes but I always wear them anyway.

nzeire · 17/04/2026 10:55

am I the only one that thinks jumpsuits are a bit past it? And kind of yukky
