What to wear to hip London wedding?

We've been invited to my niece's hip London wedding in July and I'm totally stumped on what to wear - dress code is smart summer and there is some walking between venues so teetering heels out (although not sure anyone wears these now?) and their friends are all hip media types and my SIL very glamourous!

I'm 5ft 6 currently 12/14 top and 14/16 bottom but on WLI so hoping I'll be a size smaller by then! I have an OK waist and upper body but heavy bum, hips and thighs and tend to wear waisted dresses & skirts with shirts or fine knit jumpers. Not a fan of floaty tea dresses or very formal 'Hobbs style' wedding outfits. I shop mainly on Vinted but would buy new for the right thing and brands I like including All Saints, Cos, Mint Velvet, Nobody's Child, Zara, American Vintage plus various Scandi brands.

Any ideas?

Budget?

Klements. I find the word "hip" really annoying (reminds me of of Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill cringemakingly being "hip young gunslingers" at the NME and travel guides over use it) but if any brand can claim "hipness" it can.

Ah, Julie Burchill ... was ever a woman so determinedly offensive ...??!

I'm still in love with that green & yellow Klements dress. Hardly anything seems to come up on the secondhand sites - understandably.

Hell I wouldn't even try and second guess a hip young media-type wedding! In any case, surely there are going to be parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles and other mortals there too?

What I would do is pick something towards the relaxed end of 'smart summer'. I'd also go for separates as I find it much easier to find a good fit that way. Possibly a great big swishy midi skirt skirt as I really like them at the moment. I've never tried Kemi Telford but, if funds allowed, I might give her a go, plus I'd wear it again so it wouldn't be a one off buy. Maybe something like this one although not necessarily these colours (although I like green so it stood out). They also have a drawstring waist which sounds very useful for fluctuating weight.

I'd pair it with something very simple like a shirt or a very demure round neck cardigan. Flat shoes but I always wear them anyway.

I have a few of the full drawstring near-maxi Kemi Telford skirts in cotton (much the nicest style, IMO) - all eBay buys. The drawstring waists are indeed brilliant. I have a green & white one in a pattern that I've not seen elsewhere, which gets compliments on just about every outing.

OP, if you do go down the white shirt & full skirt route, I would recommend the gathered or 8-panel Kemi Telford skirts. Avoid any of the non-cotton/Dutch wax print ones.

I also quite liked this https://www.plumo.com/products/marzano-skirt?gad_campaignid=22899964725&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADltM062y3p_91HcmtSv7yK5ZNjZK

Though I'm not sure if it's as full as the KT ones, as it's voile. But perhaps with an extra layer below?

I also LOVE these ones by Justine Tabak. This olive/khaki colourway is in clearance but only XS & S left. It's also just arrived in this brighter green.

Also, these gorgeous silk ones.

You might also get lucky with a vintage full skirt. These came up on Vinted/eBay from a search for "vintage full silk skirt". The Laura Ashley black floral one is a 12.

I had that Laura Ashley skirt in the other colour option of cream silk. It was absolutely beautiful. I wore it with a black velvet, fitted waistcoat and long black gloves. It was my 1999 Hogmanay party outfit

I still have a black velvet scarf with the black silk.

Re sizing, mine would have been a 10 and by today's standards, tiny.

I am also going to a hip wedding this year in South Korea, Dbro is getting married to Korean SIL. I am way out of my depth 😂As a Cos lover I have my eye on this jumpsuit I wouldn't normally wear a jumpsuit but think this is lovely.

Have a look at Minju Kim - I love her stuff! She did a collab with H&M maybe 5 years ago and you can sometimes find the pieces on Vinted

@Defiantly41and @BargainBinny
Thank you for these lovely clothing shop links. So many outfits I truly love.
I live and breathe in jeans and sweat shirts for ages now, a real scruff and forgot the beautiful clothes out there, I have 2 huge weddings in July and have already ordered clothing from there for weddings and everyday living, Thank you again for the shove I needed.

If you fancy something less boldly patterned than KT ( I have one and it always gets compliments but I have to be in the right mood for it) there are more fabulous full midi skirts here in plain silk and glorious colours. Elasticated waists.

I've got an 'everyday' one in a blue chambray and can vouch for the excellent workmanship. I would love the excuse of an event for a pink or pistachio silk.

They are beautiful. I've never heard of that brand. Thanks for posting it.

Edited

They are beautiful and I like giving my money to a small business with a focus on local production and sustainability. They make limited runs using end of line fabrics so if you really like something, don't dither. When it's gone, it's gone!

BargainBinny · 18/04/2026 11:59

Don’t you just hate it when clothes do that ;-)

Gillthepill · 18/04/2026 12:19

Some of these outfits are a bit too dressy for a ‘hip’ London vibe wedding. Me and Em would be a good start, Reiss, Wolf and Badger, Wyse. The Tulle and full silk skirts would be a nice base too.

Just so you know, people in South Korea don’t usually dress up for weddings if they’re a guest - they often wear work clothes like trousers and a blouse for example…

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/04/2026 12:30

@nongnangningAgree Farm Rio. Just love them for a summer wedding! Definitely wearable after the event. Also let the brides mum be the ultra smart one! If, like me, DD is directing affairs, she will be guided by her DD. You don’t have to be so you can have more fun. I think Scandinavian can be a bit dull for summer weddings. The other great combo is palazzo pants and a co-ordinating top. Silk pants crush and I’d not go near a jump suit. Nothing is less “hip” at the moment.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/04/2026 12:36

You cannot wear a white shirt to a London wedding. It would be very odd. Coordinate with the skirt.

ArtAngel · 18/04/2026 12:42

I would wear that M&S tangerine column dress - more sophisticated and London-y than anything flowery, puffy or frilly, and also not expensive/

Ilovemsrachel · 18/04/2026 13:25

Not florals. Unless they are bold ones, like Erdem style.

Last summer London wedding I went to (media and arty people) was lots of bright block colour, designer dresses with flat sandals, slip skirts with cami tops or slip dresses, black (not an issue).

I wore a dolce and gabbana dress with flat sandals.

BargainBinny · 16/04/2026 13:21

I live in London and would love an invite to a hip local wedding!

I would wear a plain top, tulle skirt and wonderful shoes.

Like this!

Love it! Although I’d go for a slightly less plain top and probably sandals.

They don’t! Hence black being seen quite often at weddings there

Saying that I did have a relative turn up to mine in jeans - I think because we’d said it was at a pub and she assumed it would be super casual - and I was a bit surprised. No one cared or commented but I did wonder if she felt a bit out of place (other female relatives were in hats)
