Women wearing bodysuits with the flaps hanging out…

I was in a restaurant the other evening and a girl came back from the loo and sat back with her friend. I was mortified to see her bodysuit ‘flaps’ ie the bit that goes underneath your bits, hanging outside her jeans. I was about to go over and let her know but thought better of it.

the next week I saw another girl strutting along the street with the same. Is this a fashion thing I’ve missed?! It looks terrible btw.

I thought you meant different flaps, so I am less horrified now, but it does sound minging. I remember wearing those when they first came out and can confirm that there is a point in the evening where its no longer possible to fasten them due to too much Malibu and lemonade.

Crikeyalmightey · 09/04/2026 11:41

God they were so uncomfortable to wear the first time around (80s). It's funny when these fashions come in again. Ra ra skirts and stripy leg warmers must be due a revival now.

Your title conjured up a rather alarming mental image!

I know what you mean, though. If I saw someone like that I would assume oversight rather than fashion statement. Or I would hope so…

VerityUnreasonble · 09/04/2026 11:49

Tbh I'd rather wear one with the flaps hanging out than cheese wiring my actual flaps. Hideous things.

PineappleCoconut · 09/04/2026 12:05

I too thought you meant other flaps.

Maybe it’s the female equivalent of having your trousers so low your entire pants are out, as seen on many young men waddling around the park?

honeylulu · 09/04/2026 12:09

It does look a bit weird because the "underwear" part of the garment is flapping in the breeze. And surely those bodysuit things are designed to be stretched out by the undercarriage fastenings so the top bit sits where it should on the chest area, so if it's undone it will be all loose and baggy?

It might be a fashion thing like the trend a few years ago to have the pocket bits of denim shorts showing at the leg hole (looked really weird like a bit of forgotten bog roll sticking out but what do I know?) But the young folk sporting the look are too young to remember Patsy in Ab Fab falling drunkenly out of a taxi with the bodysuit flaps flopping over her trousers, but that is always what I'd be reminded of if I saw it.

Mochudubh · 09/04/2026 12:09

I can understand not re-fastening if you've had a big meal or a few shandies make it difficult without falling over but surely you'd tuck the ends into your skirt/trousers? So maybe it is a weird fashion thing.

Oh god yes, this always looks so uncomfortable. The whole (panted) bum out but in order to keep the jeans up the really tight belt fastened around the lower buttocks with the belt buckle digging into the genital area in front. I try not to stare but always think "mate, you must have terrible bollock pains going around like that".

Omg I’m so here for the rara skirts. I loved them.

ZookeeperSE · 09/04/2026 12:23

It’s a runway thing apparently. Fendi did it and Marco Rambaldi, possibly some of the lesser ridiculous images from runway shows I guess 🤷‍♀️

Eargerly awaiting return of rara skirts. Also legwarmers. Could be useful next winter with cost of fuel, as well as looking amazing!

Westfacing · 09/04/2026 12:25

It could be they forget it was a body (as we called them in the 80s) and just pulled up their knickers and jeans and the gusset was forgotten about

I don't know why they are worn these days - back in the day it was to give a streamlined look when worn with skirt/trousers suits, all nice and neat! Now you can buy very sleek tight-fitting tops with Elastane or whatever which achieves the same look, IMO

I'm laughing at flaps!

wherearethesnacks · 09/04/2026 12:26

Hideous. At least tuck them in if you don't want to fasten them.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 09/04/2026 12:26

@honeylulu

Patsy in Ab Fab, exactly.

I’d say more 90s. I remember my friends and I wearing them constantly with jeans and under sleeveless button-through dresses when we were sixth form age, c1993-4. There were at lot of jokes about them being tricky for behind-the-pub fumbling sexual activity with boys 😂

Leotards were more 80s but bodysuits are a different thing.

They’re not uncomfortable at all if they’re well-made and fit properly, but most aren’t and don’t. They’re usually more flattering than tucking in a fitted top, though, as you get a much smoother and sleeker line and they don’t keep rucking up if you’re layering them.

somekindof · 09/04/2026 12:34

It’s the hygiene aspect of this that horrifies me rather than the style aspect. She’s basically rubbing her knicker gusset all over the restaurant chairs Envy

@somekindof they normally wear knickers as well this time round

When they came back round I immediately had many flashbacks of leaning my forehead on many toilet walls and doors for balance...

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/04/2026 12:50

Strange look. However, I can contest that those buggers are the devils own work to fasten up especially after a few drinks. Hope it’s not a new fashion statement. How hard is to just tuck the flaps into trousers or skirt?

80s jewellery is back in fashion, I got a huge silver linked bracelet from H&M recently. Very Dynasty.

I only recall ra ra skirts when I was 9 so approx 1980.! I had a bright pink one and a blue one and male friend of family bought me and his 1 year older DD ra ra dresses, sleeveless. I had green and red stripes she had pink and turquoise. From Chelsea Girl.

AfternoonVanessa · 09/04/2026 12:55

Donna Karan was the evil queen behind these.
Mind you I remember a colleague wearing knickers, tights , a body and 'executive shorts' in one go. A bit toasty I'm sure. 1990.

My bodysuits were 90s. Leotards were indeed 80s. 1971 baby.
