Women wearing bodysuits with the flaps hanging out…

I was in a restaurant the other evening and a girl came back from the loo and sat back with her friend. I was mortified to see her bodysuit ‘flaps’ ie the bit that goes underneath your bits, hanging outside her jeans. I was about to go over and let her know but thought better of it.

the next week I saw another girl strutting along the street with the same. Is this a fashion thing I’ve missed?! It looks terrible btw.

Eargerly awaiting return of rara skirts. Also legwarmers. Could be useful next winter with cost of fuel, as well as looking amazing!

Edited

What?! Legwarmers are out?!

(Not quite as stripy as the 90s versions, but my legwarmers go on about November and only come off in spring. Wristwarmers ditto. I blame thyroid.)

Was it definitely flaps with poppers and not something like this with a longer bottom bit? I’ve seen some of the former but never full on poppered flaps blowing in the wind! I don’t blame her though, I tried a couple and sent them straight back. Perhaps I have a long torso but they would’ve cut me in half 😩

Sadly not! The under gusset and poppers was trailing down her front and back

Zookeeper that’s horrendous !

I thought you meant different flaps, so I am less horrified now, but it does sound minging. I remember wearing those when they first came out and can confirm that there is a point in the evening where its no longer possible to fasten them due to too much Malibu and lemonade.

I love this comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

theministerscat · 09/04/2026 23:01

@ZookeeperSE That is utterly hilarious, the model’s face says it all! Jesus, the world of fashion is completely insane.

MrsBrownsBum · 09/04/2026 23:25

you were “mortified” at a bit of clothing? are you that arsed?

Am I the only person who loves bodysuits? I wear a Wolford tulle forming body under my clothes most days. They're not uncomfortable at all. I do keep any and all flaps in, though.

Thank you! I thought it was just me who loved them (second time around, I couldn't be doing with thongs in the 90s!)

They are so flattering, I wear them with wide trousers as a tight top looks so much better than a boxy t-shirt.

Flaps most definitely fastened together though, I've perfected doing the 3 poppers when pissed too! 😂

😂😂😂😂 this. Also who cares enough about what another woman is wearing to post it on mumsnet

Because it looked ridiculous and I couldn’t believe it’s FASHION. Came here to see if it’s a fashion statement.

Mortified for the girl wearing it as I thought she’d forgotten to tuck it in yes. Like seeing someone with their dress tucked in their knickers. It’s called compassion.

Yep now imagine the back flaps too!

I thought you meant piss flaps too. They’re more like dangly bits really aren’t they? I guess crotch piece might be a better term for them!

I have a photo of me and my friend in our ra ra dresses which I will post later if anyone wants.

Wearing Rimmel Heather Shimmer lipstick painted over with Lipcote?

It could be they forget it was a body (as we called them in the 80s) and just pulled up their knickers and jeans and the gusset was forgotten about

I don't know why they are worn these days - back in the day it was to give a streamlined look when worn with skirt/trousers suits, all nice and neat! Now you can buy very sleek tight-fitting tops with Elastane or whatever which achieves the same look, IMO

I'm laughing at flaps!

People wear knickers under body suits? Did I get the whole of the 1980s wrong? 😳

Batwing jumpers, hideous.

No! I love a batwing!

I still wear Heather shimmer - you can't beat it!! Not seen lipcote for years though 🤣

ForPinkCrab · 11/04/2026 17:27

I can tell you when they were originally out , I was at a party with my new boyfriend and a girl staggered out of the loo without doing hers up , this was 1994 as we married a year later! The most uncomfortable things to wear! Can’t believe they are back

NeedWineNow · 12/04/2026 10:07

@SixSevenShutUp I second your comment and raise you being unable to pull up control knickers in a nightclub loo after too much alcohol and taking them off and stuffing them in my handbag (and hoping to god that I didn't fall over in the kebab shop).

I'm dead classy me....😂

Heh, that's embarrassing, but I bet you have fantastic memories. I loved going out then, we had great times and didn't need to be Instagram ready.

I was more black eyeliner in inner rims of eyes. Then smoky eyes, very Bridget Bardot which my mum called me. Bit like Addicted to Love Robert Palmer video with LBD but without red lippy.

i have a photo of me somewhere looking like I stepped out of that video; heels, lbd red lipstick and all.

I also owned an Adam Ant frilly shirt (circa 1982) then went all ‘60s revival mini skirts. Got away with it in school by wearing netball skirts which were classed as ‘uniform’ too 😹

Then I went all 1940s in around 1985 when the shops were all nostalgic for the 40th anniversary of the end of WW2. (Not lost this one yet!)

But the late 80s / early 90s bodies! They looked good for work but oh my god. Trying to close them when drunk was an olympic sport. The contortions. In a small loo cubicle no less, with a chorus of ‘who the eff designed these bloody things’ from all sides.

I do miss that slim me who could dance / drink all night and make it into work next day with no ill effects.

@SixSevenShutUp We sure did. I don’t think I could cope with going out clubbing now with everything recorded on social media!
