Women wearing bodysuits with the flaps hanging out…

I was in a restaurant the other evening and a girl came back from the loo and sat back with her friend. I was mortified to see her bodysuit ‘flaps’ ie the bit that goes underneath your bits, hanging outside her jeans. I was about to go over and let her know but thought better of it.

the next week I saw another girl strutting along the street with the same. Is this a fashion thing I’ve missed?! It looks terrible btw.

Here’s me in 80s with crinkle top. Baby blue. With baby nephew.

What other hideous or painful fashions are due a revival then? Leotards over tights at the gym I’ve yet to see…

It’s the hygiene aspect of this that horrifies me rather than the style aspect. She’s basically rubbing her knicker gusset all over the restaurant chairs Envy

It’s no different to wearing trousers and sitting on a restaurant chair.

You have underwear between the bodysuit and skin.

And if they don’t have it fastened then it hasn’t even touched their skin.

I had to read the full OP not just the title, to put my mind at rest.😬
Yes, they are awkward, uncomfortable, and when you need glasses to fasten the tiny press studs, which can fall off as you are contorting your body to fasten, they are more trouble than they are worth.

And me mid 80s with Breton stripe tshirt and navy and white bandana. Growing out Kylie perm. 🤣

Late 80s I taught aerobics and definitely remember someone wearing one to a class which "un poppered" itself during warm up. Luckily she was also wearing leggings underneath. She wore a leotard after that. 🫣

patsy!! Ab Fab!

I thought you meant different flaps, so I am less horrified now, but it does sound minging. I remember wearing those when they first came out and can confirm that there is a point in the evening where its no longer possible to fasten them due to too much Malibu and lemonade.

I was the same! Title very confusing 😂😂

Omg I’m so here for the rara skirts. I loved them.

Lol, me too! And the leg warmers!

Crikeyalmightey · 09/04/2026 11:41

God they were so uncomfortable to wear the first time around (80s). It's funny when these fashions come in again. Ra ra skirts and stripy leg warmers must be due a revival now.

I saw a girl wearing ra ra shorts yesterday!

AfternoonVanessa · 09/04/2026 13:15

Batwing jumpers, hideous.

user976532456 · 09/04/2026 13:17

Am I the only person who loves bodysuits? I wear a Wolford tulle forming body under my clothes most days. They're not uncomfortable at all. I do keep any and all flaps in, though.

Still missing the laugh emoji

Tbh I'd rather wear one with the flaps hanging out than cheese wiring my actual flaps. Hideous things.

😂😂😂😂 this. Also who cares enough about what another woman is wearing to post it on mumsnet

Petrine · 09/04/2026 13:39

Sounds like the equivalent of getting your skirt tucked in your knickers and not realising when leaving the toilet!

I had one in the 80’s. I wore it on a plane .. what the hell was 20 something year old me thinking old me thinking 😂
Coming off plane someone fell on top me and I was knocked out .. taken to hospital via ambulance.. all I remember was the mortification when the doctor tried to examine me and couldn’t don’t work out my underwear.. threw it in bin. Never again.

PeonyPatch · 09/04/2026 14:16

It’s a very weird trend that I don’t think looks good at all…

hairbearbunches · 09/04/2026 14:25

Madge was at this back in the day. I don't think it caught on then.

Pineappleice43 · 09/04/2026 14:29

I don't know how people wear them anyway! Same with people who wear gym leggings all day. I need to breath haha

TinyGingerCat · 09/04/2026 14:50

I can still remember the pain of a body suit unpopping itself under my jeans and pinging itself against my undercarriage when I was doing some enthusiastic dancing in the late 80s. I also remember being too pissed to do it back up and leaving the flaps untucked.

Parsleyforme · 09/04/2026 15:15

Was it definitely flaps with poppers and not something like this with a longer bottom bit? I’ve seen some of the former but never full on poppered flaps blowing in the wind! I don’t blame her though, I tried a couple and sent them straight back. Perhaps I have a long torso but they would’ve cut me in half 😩

Batwing jumpers, hideous.

Aww, I knitted myself a two-tone batwing jumper back in the late 80s. Fashion was truly a thing to behold, back then. I wouldn't leave the house without blue eyeliner and shiny lip gloss.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/04/2026 15:24

I have a photo of me and my friend in our ra ra dresses which I will post later if anyone wants.

I was more black eyeliner in inner rims of eyes. Then smoky eyes, very Bridget Bardot which my mum called me. Bit like Addicted to Love Robert Palmer video with LBD but without red lippy.
